The raspberry variety Ruby Necklace was bred back in the 70s of the twentieth century by the Soviet breeder I.V Kazakov. He became literally one of the most popular among gardeners of all skill levels. The Ruby Necklace is loved for its excellent yield, excellent adaptability to conditions and excellent taste.
Description of the variety
The variety is classified as a large-fruited remontant variety with a high yield. The visual characteristics are as follows:
shrub of medium height - about one and a half meters or slightly higher;
small spreading, replacing shoots appear in the amount of 5 pieces or more;
shoots of a straight type, bear fruit only ⅔ of the total stem;
new shoots are not thin, have a green tone with a bloom like a waxy one;
there are thorns, but not frequent, short, not too sharp, located along the entire length;
the main shoot is thick, the side branches are about half a meter long;
the branches bend under the weight of the fruit, the stem remains straight;
the foliage is large, the color is dark green, the structure is loose, wrinkled.
Among the advantages of the variety are the following:
excellent yield level;
the quality of the berries is excellent, highly valued;
the variety is resistant to pests and diseases;
harvesting can be done mechanically;
the variety is self-pollinated, the berries are universal in use;
good winter hardiness;
berries are well transported;
the bush is not too tall and very strong.
There are also some disadvantages that are also worth considering:
lack of moisture leads to crushing of fruits, deterioration of taste;
insufficient feeding and darkening also affect the size and quality of the berries.
It can be concluded that the variety is responsive to good care. Thanks to properly organized agricultural technology, the shortcomings of the variety can be completely leveled.
Ripening terms
The Ruby Necklace belongs to the mid-early ripening type. The annual cycle allows harvesting in mid-August. Before the onset of cold weather, it usually ripens and at least 75% of the crop is harvested. In warm regions, the figure is about 90%
Yield
Ruby Necklace is a remontant variety capable of producing crops twice a year. About 2.5 kg of berries are collected from one bush, about 15 tons per hectare. Most of the harvest is collected from annual shoots, they are maximally productive. Thus, raspberries are ideal for commercial production. The variety is classified as high-yielding.
Berries and their taste
Mid-ripening berries in terms of ripening are as follows:
the shape is mostly regular, elongated;
weight varies from 4 to 6 g, in rare cases up to 8 g;
fruit color - rich scarlet or dark scarlet;
the taste is sweet, with a slight sourness;
as for the tasting score, according to the five-point system, it is about 3.8;
the pulp is tender, with a pleasant elastic consistency.
Growing features
Agricultural technology of this variety of raspberries is not too complicated, but the rules must be followed. Poor care will affect the quantity and quality of the crop.
Moisturizing. In the first year of planting, the variety requires abundant moisture - at least once a week. For the second year, the bushes are watered abundantly, but only during the formation of a new shrub and during the period of flowering, ripening. In the south, water evaporates very quickly, which is why it is so important to water when the first shoots appear. Be sure to moisten the bushes before each feeding, and after watering the soil needs mulching.
Pruning. In the fall, this variety of raspberries is cut almost to ground level. Ideal for annual growing. The roots should be covered with a layer of peat, humus before the cold weather. Full pruning allows you to protect raspberries from the invasion of pests and various diseases.
Fertilizer. First of all, top dressing is carried out in the pre-planting period, and then it is enough to fertilize from the age of three. In the spring, the Ruby Necklace is fed with mullein or ammonium nitrate. The flowering period requires mineral compositions, ash, organic matter in the form of bird droppings, humus, compost. In the fall, prepare fresh manure for laying.
Shelter for the winter. It is necessary to prepare the plant for winter, despite the winter hardiness of the variety. The bushes are cut, the foliage is removed, the aisles are sprinkled with humus, peat. If the bushes are not cut off, the shoots must be bent to the ground using arcs. In the south, it is enough to cover the shoots with earth or cloth. In snowy regions, the snow itself will serve as a shelter.
Site selection and soil preparation
Recommendations for choosing a soil are pretty obvious:
the site should be perfectly warmed up and well lit;
darkening may be present in small quantities, but it is better to avoid it, otherwise the yield may decrease;
the optimal place for planting is next to a wall, a fence, so the bushes will be protected from winds, cold weather;
in summer, these zones also tend to actively accumulate heat, respectively, the ripening period will be shorter.
As for the soil, this variety can bear fruit on almost any soil. However, in order for the yield to be at the proper level, it is worth enriching the soil with humus, manure, forest soil. If acidity is high, use ash, lime to normalize. In areas where moisture has been stagnant, drainage is required.
The landing period largely depends on the climatic conditions. For example, in the north, it is optimal to plant raspberries in spring. A rainy, not too hot spring is great for rooting a Ruby Necklace. In the south, the spring is shorter and hotter, so seedlings rarely have time to take root. In the southern regions, it is worth planting in the autumn, about half a month before the temperatures drop.
The bush seating method is one of the optimal, while the spine is left at least 70 cm. The tape method has also proven itself well, with it the spine should be about half a meter wide. As for the row spacing, about 2.5 m is needed here.
It is very important to buy material for planting in proven places with good reviews, since the quality of the crop and the health of the bush depend on the seedlings. The material in containers can be planted from spring to autumn, the main thing is to check the plant for pests or diseases. Roots with white outgrowths should be visible through the drainage holes. If you are purchasing cuttings without soil, they should be leafless, but with live buds. Before planting, the roots are cut off, treated with fungicidal compounds in order to prevent possible diseases. It is also important to place the roots in the Kornevin nutrient solution and hold for 2-3 hours.
Disembarkation takes place in several stages:
pits or trenches are dug at least 35 cm, as much as possible;
fertilizers of mineral and organic type are laid;
humidification occurs;
a seedling is placed, sprinkled with fertile earth;
the root collar remains at ground level;
the soil is compacted and watered;
the earth is mulched, otherwise the weed will grow more actively, the water will evaporate faster, the soil will crack.
Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.
Reproduction
The Ruby Necklace variety reproduces by shoots, offshoots of the root type, you can also grow a seedling from green shoots. The last method is used by so many experienced gardeners, they require a greenhouse room, a greenhouse.
Root division is the easiest way to propagate this variety. The following procedure must be followed:
the bush is dug up;
his condition is examined - are there any symptoms of any disease;
the bush is cut in two;
the cut points are treated with activated carbon;
seedlings are planted in a pre-selected place, taking into account the rules for planting raspberries of this variety.
