Raspberry varieties Reward appeared more than half a century ago. Since then, it has been successfully growing on personal plots of central Russia. Has a high tasting rating and all the qualities that attract gardeners and consumers.
Breeding history of the variety
Hybrid Reward was bred in the 70s of the twentieth century by breeders A.F. Vorobieva, N.A. Bartenyeva, M. Ya. Nefedova under the supervision of N.P.
The hybrid is a crossed form of Lloyd George and Kolkhoz Woman. Due to its characteristics, the variety at one time made a splash among farmers. The head of breeding work was even awarded a silver award at VDNKh, and his team was awarded bronze medals and memorable gifts.
Description of the variety
An unpretentious variety, not prone to thickening of plantings. Differs in high winter hardiness and delicate dessert berry taste.
Ripening terms
Average ripening period. Fruiting takes place in the first half of July, lasts from three weeks to one calendar month.
Growing regions
It grows successfully in the Non-Black Earth Region, forest-steppe and steppes of Ukraine and on the territory of Russia. Information from the State Register indicates that it is recommended to grow the Award in all regions of the Russian Federation, with the exception of Siberia and the Far East.
Yield
Berries appear on the bushes in the second year of the growing season. The hybrid is distinguished by a high yield, from 3 kg per bush.
Berries and their taste
Dark red raspberries are elongated, medium, and sometimes even large in size. Weight is about 2.6-3.5 g. The dense and juicy pulp has a sweet taste with a slight sourness. The aroma is traditional raspberry, pronounced. The tasting score is close to the extremely high - 4.5 points.
Bush
Semi-spreading bush grows up to 150-200 cm. The branches are thin, with long elements of internodes. The processes are not pubescent, slightly reddening with the arrival of autumn, there is a slight waxy coating.
The leaves on the bush of the Nagrada variety are small in size, wrinkled. The five-petalled flowers are large.
There are long but thick dark red thorns located on the lower part of the shoots.
Growing features
Growing conditions do not require the use of special agricultural techniques. The variety is not capricious in care.
Site selection and soil preparation
For the successful growth of the Reward hybrid, it is necessary to choose an area with good lighting. The soil needs slightly acidic, pH: 5.5-6.5.
Areas with a slight slope to the southeast, not susceptible to stagnant water, are preferred.
Planting is recommended in autumn or early spring. Seedlings are located in a row with a pitch of about 0.4-0.5 m, row spacing - 1.5-2.0 m.
It is possible to plant in a checkerboard pattern, maintaining a step between seedlings within 50-70 cm.
After planting, it is important to remove weeds and loosen the top level of the soil. Moderate watering and fertilization.
Pruning
Sanitary pruning (ridding the culture of diseased and broken branches) is carried out without reference to the season. Disease outbreaks are likely if delayed.
Seasonal pruning begins at the end of the growing season, after the harvest is harvested (removal of fruiting shoots). The shoots are thinned out, the tops are shortened at the level of 1.5-1.7 m.
With the timely disposal of the bush from dead and diseased shoots, optimal conditions are created for the growth of replacement shoots and yield for the next year.
Watering and feeding
Nitrogen fertilizers containing a large proportion of potassium help to accelerate the growth of the seedling. For raspberries, feeding with rotted manure (compost) is considered the best option. One m2 of planting requires 3 kg of fertilizer.
Then you have to generously nourish the seedlings with water and mulch the root area. An important condition when applying nitrogen fertilizers is that they need to be applied only in the first half of the growing season.
Hybrid Raspberry Raspberry is a rather demanding variety in terms of soil moisture conditions. Excess moisture in the culture is contraindicated. But its lack during the formation of ovaries can lead to shrinking of fruits and partial fall of the ovaries.
Lack of water negatively affects the yield at the most important stages for the cultivated plant:
in spring, in the growth phase of the green part of the culture;
when forming ovaries;
in the process of filling and ripening berries.
In the absence of precipitation, the culture needs to be watered infrequently, once a week or 10 days is enough. Water it abundantly so that the soil layer is saturated with water to a depth of 30-40 cm.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Raspberry Reward has an average level of winter hardiness. In the climate of central Russia, the plant does not need additional shelter.
In the initial preparation for the upcoming wintering, it is important to correctly distribute the feeding according to the seasons. During the second growing season, nitrogen supplements must be completely removed.
The bushes that survived the first frost are removed from the trellises and formed in bunches. This approach will prevent stress on the stems (snow, wind) even during wintering in an uncovered state.
In winters with little snow, it is recommended to bend the bunches of stems to the ground, pressing them with a load. Dry foliage serves as additional protection for the bushes; straw or agrofibre can be used.
Diseases and pests
Variety Prirada is not susceptible to viral diseases, moderately resistant to fungal infections. Susceptible to raspberry mites and gall midges.
Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.
Reproduction
The hybrid tends to form root suckers in sufficient quantity so that it is possible to restore the fallen plantings of raspberries from its own resources (seedlings) without any problems or to establish a new plantation.
The accessory bud at the root gives young shoots "nettles", from which a high-quality seedling grows at the end of the season.
For transplantation, an shoot is used at a distance of 30 cm from the central trunk. It is carefully dug out, grabbing a nearby root site (approximately 10 cm in each direction).
The transplant is carried out in September or April. After planting, the plant must be shortened to 30-40 cm. A dense layer of mulch will prevent the soil from drying out and increase the chances of early rooting.
And also known methods of rooting with green and lignified cuttings. This is a rather problematic option that requires patience and certain skills.
The seedlings of the Award have a good survival rate, therefore the method of propagation by root suckers is the most popular and successful.
Cutting the central trunk of the bush into a stump leads to the formation of several dozen root suckers. This is quite enough to start another plantation.
Review overview
According to gardeners' reviews, the variety is actively grown for eating fresh berries and preparing blanks from them for future use.
Raspberry Reward is believed to be damp-resistant and drought-resistant.
Delicate berries do not tolerate long-term transportation and long-term storage. The hybrid is not suitable for growing on an industrial scale.
