Raspberries are one of the healthiest berry crops. Gardeners are especially pleased with varieties that can bear fruit several times per season. Brusvyana has become a relatively new variety, giving large and spectacular fruits.
Breeding history of the variety
Brusvyan's nursery is located in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine. They began to breed raspberries of the described variety back in 1993, using local and Polish varieties of culture. The selection lasted for 15 years, but in the end the author V. Dmitriev still managed to achieve the desired result. The new variety was named the same as the nursery. It was entered into the Ukrainian state register in 2009.
Description of the variety
Brusvyana is a tree-like shrub 220 cm high. The bush is powerful, dense, erect shoots, strong, without thorns. Bushes do not require garters.
The root system at Brusvyana is developed, it is located in the upper layers of the soil. However, the root growth is poorly developed, so raspberries do not creep over the site. The leaves are large, embossed, with a classic green hue. The main disadvantage of Brusvyana is a pungent and unpleasant odor emanating from the bush.
Ripening terms
Brusvyana is a remontant raspberry variety, so a two-time harvest can be expected. The first wave starts in June, the second starts in mid-August and lasts until the first frost. The peculiarity of the variety is that the second crop never attacks the raspberry beetle.
Growing regions
Brusvyana is grown in various regions and countries. Gardeners of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are actively involved in its cultivation.
Yield
Brusvyana bears fruit twice. The first fruits are harvested from two-year-old shoots, while the second crop grows on one-year-olds. The yield is very high: up to 7 kg can be harvested from one bush. Raspberries of this variety have excellent keeping properties. If properly collected, it can be successfully transported, therefore Brusvyana is actively cultivated for the purpose of commerce.
Berries and their taste
Brusvyana has bright red berries with a matte surface. The fruits have an elongated shape, they are always very large: up to 15 g in weight. The pulp is firm. Raspberry has a rich, sweet and sour taste.
Growing features
It is recommended to grow Brusvyana next to apple trees, dill, plums, currants. It is worth avoiding the neighborhood with sea buckthorn, elderberry, irises and marigolds, garlic, parsley, radish.
The main feature of the variety is its superficial root system. Therefore, the soil should be loose when planting. Further loosening is done as carefully as possible.
When growing, tree-like Brusvyana does not require tying, but many gardeners still prefer to use trellises. The pillars are placed at a distance of 9 m from each other, their height should be at least 2 m. A wire is pulled between the pillars. With this method of cultivation, care must be taken that the bushes do not cast a shadow on each other and on neighboring crops.
Site selection and soil preparation
In order for raspberries to give a decent harvest, the place of their growth should be as illuminated as possible. The southern areas are best suited, protected from drafts and excess moisture. The soil should be loose, fertile, with a good level of acidity. If there is none, the soil is corrected with top dressing.
The preparation of the site depends on the time of planting the seedlings. If planting in spring, the soil should be prepared in the fall. For autumn planting, work is carried out in a month. The site is cleared of the remnants of old plants, dug up 30 cm deep. For spring planting, potassium and superphosphate are added, for autumn planting - humus, chicken and compost. When planting, a distance of 1–1.5 m is maintained between the bushes.
Pruning
The first anti-aging pruning is done in the spring. It is necessary to remove old branches, cut off the stems by 15–20 cm. At the end of May, thin out the bush, leaving no more than 7 of the strongest shoots. In August, the root shoots are thinned out, removing it with a shovel. At the end of the season, you can cut the raspberries at the root, but in this case, only one fruiting should be expected next year.
Watering and feeding
Brusvyana is highly drought-resistant, but this does not mean that it does not need watering. Water the plants in the early morning or evening when there is no sun. The optimal frequency is every 10-15 days. Each bush will need 2-3 buckets of 10 liters. Experienced gardeners recommend drip or sprinkler irrigation.
Of the top dressing, Brusvyana prefers organic matter most of all. They begin to introduce it in the second year. The first nitrogen fertilization is carried out in early spring, the second after fruiting. Only organic is used. Also, raspberries can be fed with complex mineral preparations designed specifically for this culture.
Frost resistance and preparation for winter
Brusvyana is a frost-resistant culture, but during the frost period it needs shelter (at temperatures from -25 °). Before the beginning of winter, the site is thoroughly cleaned. The stems can be cut completely, leaving only the root.If annual shoots are left, then the foliage is cut off from them, and then they are tied into a bunch. The bundle is bent to the ground in the form of an arch, the distance to the soil should be about 30 cm. Attached to the ground with hooks. The root zone is mulched with peat or straw. The shoots are covered with spruce branches.
Diseases and pests
Brusvyana is resistant to many diseases, but fungal infections attack her quite often. These are white spot and some types of rot. Bushes are not easy to cure, so disease is best prevented. Prevention consists in systemic spraying with fungicides, as well as Bordeaux liquid.
Of the pests, only the raspberry beetle and the weevil can be named. Insects do not appear with proper care, but if they do multiply, a strong insecticide treatment is recommended.
Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only by armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.
Reproduction
Brusvyanu will not be able to propagate root shoots, therefore gardeners recommend using one of the following methods.
- Center cut. After the bush turns 2 years old, in early spring you will need to cut out its middle along with the roots. In diameter, such a segment should be about 15 cm. The roots remaining in the soil will give at least 10 root suckers.
- Green cuttings. Choose strong green cuttings with a bleached area (found in the soil). They are planted in sand and placed in a greenhouse. When the sprouts take root, they are transferred to a permanent place of residence.
