In order to grow raspberries, it is not necessary to start with such a difficult stage as sowing seeds. There is a much simpler and more effective way - the acquisition, as well as the subsequent care of the seedlings. There are several varieties of seedlings.

  • Rooted cuttings, also called green shoots... They look like green stems with few roots. The average length is from 1 to 15 cm. They differ in a very short "shelf life" - such raspberry seedlings need to be planted within at most one day. They are the simplest variety of seedlings. You can mainly meet them at bazaars or ask neighbors / acquaintances.
  • Cassette seedlings. The cassettes are elongated shallow rectangular containers with square cells. One seedling grows in each of these cells. The seedlings themselves are grown by rooting cuttings. Sometimes they can be grown using root cloning. In such seedlings, the likelihood of the presence of parasites or diseases is practically excluded. One of the advantages of this type of seedlings is that they can continue to grow in cassettes for a while. They are one of the most expensive types of seedlings.
  • Seedlings of the first year. It is a small seedlings from 30 to 40 cm long. They are considered the most convenient and acceptable option. Most often you can find it in the respective stores. They have a full, well-developed stem and a strong root system. Often they are prepared in the fall. Have a reasonable price.
  • Biennial seedlings. As a rule, they are last year's annual seedlings. They already have a fairly strong and powerful root system. Some seedlings can even bear fruit in the first year of planting. They have a higher cost compared to annual seedlings.

How to choose a seedling?

Obviously, the modern assortment offers many varieties and varieties, not only of raspberries, but thousands of other crops.

And it is very easy to get confused in this assortment.

However, there are several factors, focusing on which you can choose the most suitable raspberry variety.

  1. First of all, you need to decide on what you will grow raspberries for... For example, sweet and large fruits are obviously suitable for eating. And you need to choose the appropriate grade. For jam, you can take varieties with slightly sour and not very large berries. If you plan to sell, then you need to stop your choice on varieties whose fruits can lie for a long time, and also relatively easy to transfer moving.

  2. And you also need to take into account such a factor as the possibility of regular care.... For example, if you do not live on a plot, and you do not have the opportunity to monitor daily whether the bushes are well tied, then it is better to opt for upright seedlings. If you have such an opportunity, then you can purchase seedlings with flexible stems.

  3. The growing region is also important. For cold areas, frost-resistant samples should be taken. It is also necessary to find out the names of varieties that grow in your region. Or at least find the names of varieties that thrive well in the local climate and local soil.

  4. One of the benefits of raspberries is their good disease resistance. The presence of diseases requires constant care and investment, which some novice gardeners may not be ready for.

  5. Planting time is also important.... For planting in the fall, it is best to choose certain varieties that are more resistant to cold weather. They differ from those recommended for planting in spring.

  6. The selection of seedlings is the largest in the fall.... The reason for this is quite commonplace - most of the seedlings are harvested during this period. Fall samples are usually sold in the spring. It is more advisable to acquire and plant sprouts in the fall.

A well-chosen seedling can give a succession of good long-term yields. And also such raspberries can be transplanted without loss of yield.

How to save before landing?

If the variety has already been selected, the seedlings have been ordered or have already been purchased, then now you need to move on to the next step - to make sure that the seedling lives safely until the moment it is planted. There are some simple but powerful guidelines.

  1. If the sprout is wrapped in a bag, then first of all you need to remove it. Next, you need to wrap it with a damp cloth. Try to place such a sprout in the ground as quickly as possible.

  2. Another way to keep the sprout "fresh" is to place it in a potting soil. To do this, the bucket must be half filled with earth and filled with the same amount of water. You do not need to lower the entire sprout completely. It will be enough to put the roots in the bucket.

  3. Removing dead or damaged roots will also help keep the seedlings viable. They need to be cut off.

It is also worth noting that seedlings are best preserved in a container, while in paper, a bag or simply in the air, they do not live long.
