Experienced gardeners have long corrected all the processes on their site, developed certain methods. But novice landowners may well have many different questions regarding planting and caring for trees and shrubs. And one of them - when to plant raspberries - is worth considering in more detail.

Is it better to plant in spring or autumn?

The question of when is the best time to plant raspberries arises for many, and someone, through experiments, comes to the final conclusion. But in fact, the question of when to plant raspberries in the country depends greatly on the region of residence.

  • In too harsh climatic conditions, many exclude the autumn option right away, since the seedlings simply do not have time to take root before frost and will die. Here the choice is unambiguous - spring, and you also need to carefully decide on the month and days, focusing on weather forecasts.

  • In the southern regions, on the contrary, experienced gardeners believe that autumn is the best option. The plant has the opportunity to root well, and the next year, subject to all agricultural techniques, you can wait for the first harvest.

  • In other cases, you should focus on your own capabilities and preferences. Raspberries planted in spring also have every chance of rooting well over the summer and wintering safely. But in spring and summer, she needs some care, this must not be forgotten in order to end up with healthy plants that give a full harvest. When planting in the spring, you need to choose such days so that the plant does not grow immediately - it will take energy, and as a result, the bush may wither. The main goal of planting is the formation of a healthy root system.

Therefore, each gardener makes a choice for himself, focusing on what result he wants to get.

Spring planting dates

Spring planting starts in March and ends in May. Again, it all depends on the region. In the southern territories, gardeners are developing a vigorous activity in March. At this time, it is already warm enough, but the growing season has not yet begun, which means there is a chance that the raspberry bushes will take root well, the roots will receive their full development before the buds swell and the leaves begin to bloom. In the middle lane, the optimal month is April, rather, the last decade, with too cold spring - the beginning of May.

Well, in the northern regions - this is the middle and even the end of May.

Some are guided by the lunar calendar and necessarily follow the days that are indicated there for each type of trees, shrubs and vegetables. They change every year. In 2021, these are the dates:

  • from 26 to 29 March;

  • from 11 to 15 and from 25 to 26 April;

  • from 2 to 10 May.

Thus, a gardener from any region has every chance to have time to plant raspberries on a convenient day.

But for successful fruiting, only the chosen period is not enough. Other nuances are also very important, and only all of them together will allow you to get a full harvest.

Let's list them.

  • The right choice of location. Raspberry loves sunny areas, it can be slightly shaded at certain times of the day. Groundwater should not be close to the surface. In addition, raspberries do not like the wind, so planting a bush near the fence would be a very correct decision.

  • Optimal soil. You need a loose, fertile soil. Before planting, it is necessary to add fertilizers - organic and mineral - to each hole, the soil should not be acidic.

  • Timely watering. You should be guided by the weather, but young seedlings need a lot of water at first. It is worth making sure that the soil is moist, and adhere to the basic rules of watering: early in the morning or late in the evening.

  • Fertilizers. A very important point - raspberries respond very gratefully to feeding, without them you should not hope for a bountiful harvest.

  • Protection against diseases and pests. Mandatory and regular activities. Since in spring and summer there are a lot of different troubles lurking raspberries in this regard, it is better to take preventive measures than to treat the affected bushes later.

If all these conditions are met, spring planting will bring good results.

Do not forget that the distance between the bushes during planting should ideally be from 70 cm to a meter, and between the rows - one and a half meters.

In addition, the bushes need timely pruning.

Autumn landing time

And again, the issue of autumn planting cannot be considered separately from the region, because this is precisely what plays a key role. Here the situation develops back to spring. In the northern regions, bushes begin to be planted already at the beginning of September, in the southern regions this process can be safely carried out at the beginning of November. But, again, you should definitely be guided by the weather. Various surprises are possible here. It is clear that you need to plant the bushes in dry, moderately cool weather. Wait out the rains.

Those who like to navigate by the lunar calendar from regions with different climatic conditions can also choose good days for themselves.

This year they were distributed as follows:

  • September 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29;

  • October 17, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29;

  • November 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25.

When to plant, taking into account the region?

Each region has its own characteristics: somewhere too dry summer, in some areas early and frosty autumn, in others hot spring. Therefore, it is always worth focusing not on general principles, and not even on the lunar calendar, but on those days that are suitable in a particular region.

  • In outskirts of Moscow you can plant raspberries in the spring as early as late April or early May. In autumn, this can be done in the first decade of October.

  • In the Leningrad region and in the Urals these terms do not move too much either. Early May and late September are good options. The main thing is to wait for dry days.

  • In the middle lane, for example, in Yaroslavl, Tver, Vologda, you can focus on April for spring planting and the first part of October for autumn.

  • In the Rostov region and in the Krasnodar region you can safely choose the end of March in the spring, and in the fall it is worth waiting for the beginning of November. Sometimes in the Kuban it is so warm that some begin spring planting in the very first days of March, and autumn ones shift to the end of November.

  • As for Siberia, then the climate here is more severe, so it is better to prefer spring for disembarkation, and this is closer to the end of May. If you decide to choose autumn, then it is better to focus on the beginning or middle of September.
