When choosing an onion variety for planting in a garden bed or farm fields, many growers prefer Dutch varieties that rarely get sick, quickly adapt to growing conditions, and also give abundant yields that can be stored for a long time. These varieties include the medium late onion variety Shtur BS20 of Dutch selection.
Breeding history
Onions Shtur BS20 is a popular variety developed by scientists Bejo Zaden B. V. (Netherlands) in 2010. Since 2011, the variety has been listed in the State Register of approved for use on the territory of the Russian Federation. Onions are cultivated mainly in the Central region. You can grow a vegetable both on a small garden ridge and on farmlands.
Description of the variety
This onion species is a powerful plant with a semi-spreading rosette of feathers. It is characterized by a rosette of medium thickening of emerald-green feathers with a barely noticeable waxy bloom, a developed root system and resistance to shooting during the growing season. In favorable conditions, feathers grow to a height of 30-40 cm.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs
Onion Shtur BS20 stands out among its relatives with an attractive presentation. Onion heads ripen well aligned and neat. The variety belongs to the medium-fruit category. As a rule, bulbs grow weighing 90-130 grams, but sometimes larger specimens are found - 150-160 grams. The diameter of the middle head reaches 6-8 cm.
The shape of the vegetable is non-standard - rhombic with an elongated neck of medium width. The surface of the bulb is smooth, glossy, without any defects. The skin of the vegetable is thin, but strong, consisting of 2-3 dry scales that tightly cover the onion pulp. Outwardly, the vegetable is evenly colored brown-bronze, and the flesh of the root vegetable is snow-white. The vegetable is quite dense, and its structure is small, consisting of one bulb.
The dug out bulbs tolerate transportation without significant losses, and also have a long shelf life - up to 8-10 months if the crop is stored in a cool and ventilated room.
Purpose and taste
Dutch onions are characterized by good taste. The snow-white core is endowed with a fleshy, moderately dense, tender, crispy and juicy texture. The vegetable has a balanced taste - medium pungency goes well with notes of sweetness, piquancy and classic onion aroma. The vegetable does not have a pronounced pungency.
The use of Dutch onions is varied - it is added to salads, various hot and cold dishes. In addition, the vegetable is delicious pickled and added to the famous French onion soup. Many of them are grown specifically for winter harvesting.
Maturation
This onion species belongs to the mid-late varieties. The growing season lasts 95-115 days. The absolute ripening of the specimens is indicated by yellowed feathers, which lay down on the ground by a third. Digging can begin in August, and the bulk harvest is in September.
Yield
The variety is declared as high-yielding. It is characteristic that the productivity indicator does not depend on climatic whims. Growing onions on an industrial scale, you can dig up an average of 279-310 centners per hectare of plantations. The maximum yield was recorded at 464-464 c / ha.
Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings
This variety is grown mainly by sevk. Sevka planting is carried out in late April - early May. Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in March, and from the end of April to the first days of May, the strengthened bushes are transferred to the garden ridge. In addition, the variety is suitable for winter sowing.
Growing and care
The vegetable is cultivated by seedling method and sevkom. When planting with sevkom, it is recommended to select healthy bulbs of the same size, which are buried 3 cm into the soil of previously prepared grooves.
When growing a vegetable by seedling, a distance of 11-12 cm between plants, as well as a distance between rows of 25-30 cm, is required.
Onion care is standard - watering with warm water every 7-10 days, weeding and loosening the soil, fertilizing twice a season, preventing infections.
Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.
Soil requirements
The vegetable is completely undemanding to the quality of the soil, the main thing is that it is light, breathable, enriched with nutrients, moist and not sour. Onions can be planted in sod, and in loamy, and in sandy loam fertile soils.
The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.
Required climatic conditions
The vegetable is characterized by good stress resistance - it is not afraid of cold snaps, sudden temperature jumps, drought. For planting, a weed-free area with an abundance of sun, light and heat is selected. Having planted a crop, it is recommended to provide protection from drafts.
Disease and pest resistance
The Dutch culture has a high immunity, due to which it is rarely exposed to fungal and other infections - downy mildew, tobacco mosaic virus. Insects that often attack the crop, for example, the onion fly, bring more trouble to the vegetable.
Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.
