Shakespeare's bow appeared in our country not very long ago. But he managed to become quite popular and in demand in domestic gardens due to its unusual taste and useful properties.

Breeding history

The new winter onion variety Shakespeare (synonymous with Shakespeare) was completed by a Dutch breeder named David E. O'Connor in 2015. At the end of the same year, Allium Seeds UK Ltd (Great Britain), which is an agent for the sale of agricultural raw materials, submitted an application to the State Register for admission to growing this variety on the territory of the Russian Federation. And after carrying out variety trials, the variety was included in the State Register for the Central Region in 2019. The originator was the same British company.

Description of the variety

Shakespeare is recommended to be grown on a turnip as a biennial crop from a set. The onion reaches its final ripening when it reaches the age of 2.5 months. Fertilization of the crop is almost 100%, the yield is very good.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

Holland onion bulbs are distinguished by their shape of a circle, as well as a beautiful shade with a transition from yellow to brown. Each bulb weighs 90-100 grams. Dry scales have two to three layers. The white scales are juicy. The neck of the onion is of medium width; the bulb itself is usually two- or three-pronged.

Purpose and taste

Shakespeare's taste is semi-sharp. It is used mainly fresh. The pulp has a juicy, dense texture. The product is very useful due to its properties. It has a beneficial effect on the activity of the heart, improves blood circulation, and also lowers cholesterol levels. Using it in food, you can normalize blood pressure. And Shakespeare's onion also promotes the secretion of gastric juice and stimulates the appetite.

Maturation

Early ripe Shakespeare onions can ripen in 90 days

Yield

The average marketable yield of Shakespeare is 296 kg / ha, which is considered the standard. The maximum collection was recorded in the Moscow region in 2016 - 580 c / ha.

Growing and care

It is best to plant the Dutch onion variety in places that have a slight elevation above the ground level of the entire plot, in an open and brightly lit area. In this case, the earth will warm up faster, and melt water will not stagnate.

Before planting, it is better to dig up the soil and saturate it with fertilizers such as humus, compost, ash. The Shakespeare variety is allowed to grow in one place for no more than two years, and it will be possible to return here only after 5 years. It is better to plant a crop in those beds where legumes previously grew. Before planting onions directly, the soil must rest for a whole month.

Gardeners often use a row pattern for planting onions. Shakespeare can be planted 3-4 seedlings in each hole. The material is deepened by a few cm. The distance between two adjacent holes is 10 centimeters, in the aisle - 15-20 centimeters. If you plant Shakespeare in this way, the bulbs will last longer. Planting dates depend on the region where the onion is grown.

Dutch culture needs timely watering. And it is also necessary to remove weeds, loosen the ground so that a crust does not form. For the first time, watering of Shakespeare onions is carried out after May 15. This is due to the fact that the soil in the spring is quite well saturated with moisture. When the precipitation stops, moisture will be needed. In a rainy spring, watering begins no earlier than the first summer month.

Top dressing affects the yield no less than watering. The first top dressing is applied at the start of the ripening of the bulbs. Next, fertilizers are applied 2 weeks after 1 groundbait. This is necessary for the growth and further maturation of the bulbs.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
