Many European varieties of onions take root well and show high productivity in Russia. Along with popular Dutch developments, British-bred products such as the Rumba onion give excellent results.

Breeding history

The onion variety Rumba was developed by the British firm Allium Seeds UK LTD. This company has a narrowly focused field of activity: it is engaged in the cultivation of onions (yellow, red) and shallots for industrial production and private farms.

In Great Britain, Rumba has become one of the leading varieties of this crop. It is very popular in most regions of Europe, especially in Poland, Belgium, France.

Since 2014, Rumba has been included by the State Sort Commission of the Russian Federation in the register of breeding achievements and zoned for the Central Black Earth Region.

Description of the variety

Rumba is a very high-quality variety of onions with medium ripening periods, high-yielding, unpretentious in care, resistant to some diseases, versatile in use. The bulbs are yellow-brown, round, firm and rather large. It is grown by seeds, seedlings and sets.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

Rumba cultivar forms bulbs of a leveled spherical shape with a neck of medium thickness and dry outer scales (no more than 5 layers) of a golden-red color. Dimensions are average and above average: weight can reach from 100 to 350 g, but most often this figure is 100-120 g.

The variety belongs to small breeds: 1-2 heads are formed on one bottom. The onion produces light green feathers with a waxy bluish bloom. The density of the bulb is high, without voids in the middle, the inner scales are white and juicy.

Purpose and taste

Rumba has a spicy taste, with a harmonious combination of sweetness and spicy light bitterness. This onion is used fresh in salads, appetizers, hamburgers. It is used for side dishes: stewed and fried. Various marinade options allow you to prepare many canned preparations for the winter, for example, onions in wine or onion jam.

Maturation

Rumba is a mid-season variety, but in some regions it ripens late. Most often, after 2-2.5 months (60-80 days) after planting the seed, it is already possible to harvest. Large specimens fully mature in about 3-4 months (100-130 days).

Yield

This high-yielding variety yields on an industrial scale from 150 to 500 quintals per hectare. Average indicators range from 190 to 316 c / ha. During harvesting, the indicator of ripe onions is 94%, so part of the harvest is sent to ripening.

The variety shows good keeping quality: in properly organized conditions, the crop can be stored for up to 9 months.

Growing regions

Rumba onions are grown practically throughout the entire territory of the Russian Federation; the variety has sufficient cold resistance even for the northern regions. The best productivity is typical for the southern and temperate latitudes. Variety tests were carried out in the Central Black Earth Region, and the yield of Rumba exceeded the standard for this area.

Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings

Seed material (nigella seeds) is planted in the spring, in heated soil, depending on the region: from the beginning of April to the first days of May.During the summer season, full-fledged bulbs will not be able to fully grow and ripen, so seedlings are grown with seeds. In the middle of summer, the sets need to be collected, dried, sorted and stored.

Sevok can be planted in the spring (from April to June) and before winter 2-3 weeks before the onset of frost (in the second decade of September - in the north, in October - in the center of Russia, in early November - in the south). Small onions can be treated with a manganese solution. When planting, the following distances are maintained: 20-40 cm between rows and 5-10 cm between onions. The sevok is buried no more than 5 cm. When planting in spring, the crop is harvested from August to September, focusing on the lodging and yellowing of the onion tops.

For one-year onion cultivation, the seedling method is used: from the last days of February, seeds are sown in containers and boxes, germinated under a film until germination, and after 2 months the seedlings are transferred to the garden bed.

Growing and care

The Rumba onion plantation does not require excessive maintenance. This variety is not prone to shooting. Agricultural technology consists in eliminating weeds, loosening and hilling the soil, regular watering and applying additional fertilizing.

For forcing the feathers, organic and nitrogen-containing fertilizers are required. Ash and a phosphorus-potassium supplement have a positive effect on the formation of bulbs.

During planting of seedlings or seedlings and during the growing season, plants are demanding on the level of moisture: watering should be abundant, about 10-13 liters per 1 m². Before ripening and collecting onions, watering is stopped.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

The variety is not very picky about the quality of the soil, although the depleted soil will affect the size of the bulbs. It is important that the soil has a high degree of aeration: the site must be dug up and loosened. Rumba grows in most types of soil, although loam or sandy loam with a neutral acidity level is best. It is undesirable to place the bed on an area with a high level of groundwater.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Disease and pest resistance

Rumba is good at resisting infections such as:

  • white rot;
  • yellow streak (dwarfism);
  • bottom rot or fusarium;
  • brown leaf spot.

Danger can be posed by onion mosaic virus, downy mildew fungus, neck rot and mold rot that affects onions during storage.

Insecticides are used against onion mites, weevils, aphids, moths and other pests. A good result is given by planting next to plants that repel harmful insects, for example, carrots.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
