When choosing onion sets for planting in a garden ridge, many vegetable growers prefer to choose exactly Dutch breeding hybrids, since they are characterized by high endurance and unpretentious care. In addition, Dutch onions taste great. These include the mid-early Cupido hybrid.
Breeding history
The Cupido onion is a first generation hybrid bred by breeders of the Dutch agricultural company Nickerson Zwaan B. V. in 2011. After a series of tests in 2015, the vegetable crop was added to the State Register of approved for use on the territory of the Russian Federation. Onions are cultivated in small garden beds, in farm fields, as well as in greenhouse structures. The culture is maximally productive, growing in the Central Black Earth, Far Eastern, Central and Lower Volga regions. In addition, onions are massively grown in Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus.
Description of the variety
The Dutch onion is a compact plant with beautiful erect feathers of bright green color. Feathers are extended to a height of 30-40 cm. The density of feathers is moderate. During the growing season, arrowing is practically not observed. A powerful root system is considered a characteristic feature of the culture.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs
The bow with the beautiful name Cupido is famous for its attractive appearance. Specimens ripen neat and aligned, so the hybrid is often grown on an industrial scale. The variety belongs to large-fruited. The average weight of the bulbs is 90-120, sometimes 150 grams. The shape of the bulb is correct - round or oval, with a perfectly smooth surface and a noticeably elongated neck. The skin of the vegetable is thin, consisting of dry scales of a brown-yellow hue, sometimes straw-colored. Onion pulp is snow-white-greenish, endowed with high density. The structure of the bulb is medium-sized, since it consists of two bulbs.
Due to the tight fit of the peel to the fruit, its strength, the vegetable tolerates transportation well, and can also be stored in a cool place for a long period. It is necessary to store the dug out onions in a dry basement / cellar at a temperature of + 5 ... 7 degrees. As a rule, a vegetable is stored for 6-8 months, which is very rare for medium-early hybrids.
Purpose and taste
Cupido is famous for its excellent taste. The snow-white pulp with greenish veins is endowed with a juicy, tender and fleshy consistency. The onion has a classic taste - light pungency goes well with pleasant sweetness. The huge advantage of this hybrid is the composition of the pulp, in which the increased content of essential oils, phytoncides, trace elements, sugar, mineral salts and vitamins C, PP, B.
The dug vegetables are widely used in cooking - they eat fresh onions, add them to cold and hot dishes, pickle, use for canning, and the hybrid is ideal for winter harvesting.
Maturation
This onion species represents a class of medium early varieties. From the mass emergence of seedlings to full maturation of the bulbs, 75-85 days pass. The period from full germination to lodging of feathers is slightly shorter - 77-81 days. Onions can be harvested in the second half of July, and mass harvesting occurs at the end of July - mid-August. As soon as a third of the tops is laid, the onions can be dug up.
Yield
The productivity of the hybrid is excellent. In a favorable environment and with proper agricultural technology, an average of 266-355 centners of juicy and aromatic bulbs can be dug out from 1 hectare. Growing onions in a garden ridge, you can get about 4 kg per 1 m2. The maximum yield was 604 c / ha.
Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings
The timing of planting onions directly depends on the climatic features of the region. Planting seedlings in open ground is carried out during a period of stable heat - from the first days to the end of May. Sevok is planted before winter in the following periods - 2-3 weeks before the first cold weather, or in early spring, after the end of the frost.
Growing and care
This hybrid is grown in a biennial culture. In the first year, seedlings and green feathers are grown from seeds. In the second year, sevok is cultivated on a turnip. When planting by seed, it is worth following the basic rules - do not bury the seeds in the grooves by more than 1-1.5 cm, observe the distance between plantings of 5-8 cm, and also provide a greenhouse effect, which will accelerate germination.
When growing with seedlings, it is necessary to select high-quality planting material. The bulbs should be small, firm, dry, uniform and free from unpleasant odors. Sevok is planted on garden ridges, usually in mid-May. First, grooves are made 5 cm deep. For winter sowing, grooves are prepared deeper - 8-10 cm. The correct scheme for planting is 20x10 cm (this scheme is suitable for seedlings of seedlings). Good precursors for onions are courgettes, potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, cabbage, spinach, and radish.
Agrotechnology of onions is standard - watering as the upper soil layer dries up (during a drought period, watering is carried out 1 time in 2-3 weeks), several dressings in conditions of depleted soils (potassium salt and ammonium nitrate), obligatory weekly weeding and loosening to a depth of 4 -6 cm, prevention of viruses and insect infestations.
According to experienced growers, laying a light layer of mulch from sawdust and cut grass will help to curb the growth of weeds. It is recommended to stop watering a month before harvesting onions.
Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.
Soil requirements
A vegetable crop can grow in any soil, the main thing is that it is nutritious and fertile (with a high humus content), as well as with a neutral or low acidity level. In addition, good looseness and breathability are important. Experienced vegetable growers plant the hybrid on sandy loam and loamy soils, well fertilized with organic matter.
The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.
Required climatic conditions
The plant is not very demanding on environmental conditions. It is recommended to grow onions in leveled, weed-free areas where there is a lot of sun and light throughout the day. In addition, the bow must be protected from gusty winds and drafts. It is also worth remembering that Cupido onions are very susceptible to sudden temperature changes, for example, from plus to minus. In such an environment of temperature jumps, the plant may die.
Disease and pest resistance
This hybrid has high immunity, which provides protection against many diseases that onions are susceptible to. Fungal infections can cause excess moisture and dampness. The culture is also not afraid of pest attacks. An exception is the onion fly (larvae). Treat insects with insecticidal treatments. Many farmers refuse to use insecticides, preferring light dusting with wood ash, as well as laying out chopped wormwood grass around the plantings. In addition, you can plant carrots or calendula nearby, which the onion fly does not tolerate.
Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.
