Fans of exotic onion varieties will certainly like the mid-season Black Prince variety, which has simple agricultural technology, quickly adapts to climatic characteristics, and is also characterized by abundant yields.
Breeding history
The Black Prince onion is the result of the work of a group of breeders of the Federal Research Center of Vegetable Growing. A vegetable crop was bred in 2003. Authorship belongs to Dubova M.V., Agafonov A.F., Efimova E.G. and Florova V.A. The vegetable is cultivated in the Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Ural and West Siberian regions. The culture is grown mainly in open ground.
Description of the variety
The Black Prince onion is a compact plant with an erect rosette of beautiful feathers. In a favorable environment, the height of the greenery reaches 30-40 cm. Feathers are characterized by a bright green color, a pronounced waxy coating that performs a protective function, and a pleasant aroma. During the growing season, thin, beautiful arrows are formed, 80-100 cm long.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs
The black prince is visually attractive and lined bulbs. Medium-sized specimens ripen - 60-100 grams. The shape of vegetables is neat - rounded or rounded-elongated. The surface of the bulbs is smooth, firm, glossy, consisting of dry scales of a dark purple color. The middle of the onion is quite dense, has a beautiful color - snow-white-purple. In structure, the vegetable is a medium-sized one, consisting of 2-3 onions.
The harvested crop can be transported to any distance, as well as stored for a long time without loss of marketability and taste.
Purpose and taste
Black Prince onions are characterized by excellent taste. The white pulp with a purple tint has a delicate, fleshy, moderately dense and juicy consistency. The taste is slightly sweet, with a pleasant spice and spicy notes. The pungency of the vegetable is practically not pronounced. Onion pulp contains many vitamins, trace elements, sugars, as well as an increased amount of quercetin and selenium.
Dug up onions are widely used in cooking - they are eaten fresh, added to cold and hot dishes, pickled, and also used for canning vegetables. In addition, this variety is ideal for winter storage.
Maturation
The onion belongs to the mid-season varieties. The growing season is 100-105 days. Ripening of root crops is a little slow. Digging of the bulbs begins in mid-August. On ripe onions, feathers turn yellow and tend to the ground.
Yield
The yield indicators of the variety are good if you follow the rules of care. On average, 5-7 kg of delicious vegetables can be dug out from 1 m2 of plantings. On an industrial scale, the average productivity is 153-380 kg / ha. The maximum yield is 450 c / ha.
Growing and care
The vegetable is cultivated by several methods - seed, seedling and sevka. Planting is carried out from April 20 to the first week of May - it all depends on the climate of the growing region. Sowing for seedlings is carried out in March, and bushes are transferred to the garden closer to mid-May. Sevok is planted in early May. The bulbs are carefully sorted, disinfected, dried, and then buried in pre-prepared grooves by 1-2 cm.The optimal sevka for planting is considered to be a 20x5 cm scheme. In addition, the variety allows sowing before winter in late October - early November.
Crop care is standard: watering 2 times a week, applying fertilizers three times per season (superphosphates, potash complexes, compost), loosening after each watering, periodic weeding of row spacings, prevention of diseases.
Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.
Soil requirements
There are no special requirements for the quality of the soil, it is important that onions grow in light, fluffy, fertile, breathable and non-acidic soils. Loam and sandy loam with a good drainage system are considered optimal for cultivation.
The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.
Required climatic conditions
For growing onions, a bright area is selected, abundantly illuminated by the sun. This may be a small elevation with good draft protection.
Disease and pest resistance
Due to its good immunity, the plant is rarely exposed to fungal diseases and pest attacks. If agrotechnical recommendations are violated, the Black Prince onion can be sick with powdery mildew, yellow dwarfism, fusarium. Among the insects that harm the culture, it is worth highlighting mites, nematodes, onion moths, thrips and a hidden proboscis.
Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.
