Travel shovels: varieties and tips for choosing

A tourist shovel is an indispensable tool for those who are going on a hike, expedition, or just to relax in nature or fishing. Now there are many varieties of this tool, but in order to make the right choice, you need to take into account some of the nuances.

In order to choose the right camping shovel, you must first figure out what modifications are.

• Classic folding. Modern models have two folding points, they are very compact and lightweight. The kit includes a case, which may have several additional functions.
• Multifunctional shovels. Created on the basis of a machete or a balisong knife. They can be used as a shovel, saw, or a sharp tool as an ax.
• Non-foldable. Models are compact in size, with additional trekking tools that fit inside the grip.
• Small sappers. All-metal shovels, which makes it possible to use them as a hatchet or crowbar.

One of the well-known and quite popular among travelers are the Fiskars hiking shovels, which are incredibly durable and well-thought-out. They are used not only in hikes, but also in personal plots. The range of Fiskars shovels, in turn, also has varieties:

• bayonet - it copes well with digging hard soil, since the sharpened blade fits well into the ground;
• with rounded edges - it lifts the soil well with minimal effort, and for greater comfort it is better to take it with a long handle;
• soviet - it is used for scattering crushed stone or sand, the design of such a shovel helps to lift the load without loosening the working surface;

• for snow - has the shape of a low bucket with a steel sharpened edge, strong and with a long service life;
• telescopic - it is especially popular, since it is quite compact, and if necessary, it can be quickly put into working condition;
• foldable - also takes up little space and is characterized by versatility.

When choosing a tourist shovel, it is necessary to take into account its original purpose, as well as the material from which it is made, since this criterion significantly affects the weight of the tool. The most durable equipment is made of steel, but it also weighs, accordingly, more. Models with a steel scoop and a handle made of wood or plastic can be called optimal. Sizes are from 40 to 70 cm, and folded 20-25 cm. There are also special models for backpacks.

If you need to work on hard ground, it is better to choose a shovel with a pickaxe that folds in the shape of a blade. For long journeys, equipment that has additional tools in its kit is suitable.
