Loft-style walls
The "attic" American style cannot be confused with any other. It is characterized by outstanding features in the form of cold colors, brickwork (or plaster), metal painting. But the most important thing is that the loft style is characterized by ceilings with open ventilation, pipes that resemble a production room.
A loft-style home resembles a living space converted from a factory or a former factory. The style originated in America in the 40s, when the Great Depression just ended. At this time, industrial premises began to be leased. The loft is characterized as a style for creative, free people.
The main features of the style
I would like to note right away that a loft allows a combination of different styles: for example, high-tech or industrial can be combined. Often incongruous things are the "highlight" of the project: "shabby masonry" and high-tech furniture. The main feature is industrialization, which can be indicated by open communications: pipelines, ventilation and more.
Often, a loft-style house has a second floor: this helps to fully comply with the direction, because it implies high ceilings and free space. As for the space, it has no partitions. The windows are not covered with curtains, as it is very important that a lot of natural light enters the room.
Furniture plays an important role in the interior. Its design is very simple, here practicality takes the first place. It is permissible to combine antiques with modern gizmos, but at the same time antique furniture serves as an accent, that is, there should be less of it. A very important rule is zoning. Furniture should be compatible with each other within different areas.
Large posters, posters or paintings by famous artists are often used in the loft style. You can often see an unusual exhibit on the wall: a surfboard or a bicycle. This design is more typical of creative people.
Loft is a bold and extraordinary style that is at the peak of its popularity.
Let's consider several characteristic features of the direction.
- Wall decoration. As a rule, in such an interior, plaster is used for the walls or they are painted with paint. Most often you can see concrete or brickwork.
- Spacious area. High ceilings, a minimum of partitions and large windows are the main features of the style.
- Decor. There are a lot of handmade items in the interior. Exclusive crafts are easy to find online or in a vintage store. You can also see indoor plants: palm trees, ficuses.
- Furniture. It must be functional, always made of metal or natural wood.
You can use mobile partitions that can be transformed at will: unfold, fold. Racks are suitable for visual zoning.
Material options
There are a lot of wall decoration options. You can contact both the masters and with the help of certain materials to create something unique on your own. A black wall, for example, is ideal for extraordinary people, and stenciled inscriptions can also be seen on the walls. To plan the finish, you first need to choose the right materials. The most popular ones will be discussed below.
Brick
Brick is rightfully considered the best material for decoration. Masonry comes in several shades: white, brown, gray. The brick finish looks great in different rooms. Often, imitation bricks are installed in the house, for example, smooth tiles. This option is especially good in the kitchen, because the tiles are not susceptible to dirt and are easy to clean from stains.
It is not at all necessary to cover all the walls with bricks: mixing is permissible, for example, with plaster. Color is chosen at will, but red brick is most common. Fans of something non-standard can use the black version.
Concrete
Another popular material for wall decoration. Hardly anyone associates concrete with coziness, but in the loft style it can look different. The main difference between architectural concrete is its appearance: the coating is smooth, soft, without cracks. Art concrete must meet visual aesthetic requirements. This material differs in texture, colors.
For those with a rebellious spirit, externally "damaged" surfaces are suitable, while smooth options are appropriate for minimalist designs.
The material can be replaced with decorative concrete plaster. Interestingly, it is used in food service establishments, clubs and office buildings. Novacolor, ASTI, San Marco, Elf Decor are the best manufacturers of such material.
Metal
Since cold comes from the metal, there should be a minimum of such material. It can be taken as a basis: for example, there may be metal pipes on the ceiling, which will bring the spirit of the city into the atmosphere of the house. It should be noted that metal decor does not have to be massive and monumental. Sometimes, just one forged headboard or metal furniture legs is enough - it all depends on the preferences of the owner of the house.
Wood
Wood flooring creates a homely feel, but it is important not to overdo it with wood. The industrial style is on friendly terms with the wood flooring, but does not allow excess of it. Wood trim works best on one wall. You can make an accent wall, for example, at the head of the bed. On the walls, you can independently create a relief using certain techniques when processing wood.
Such techniques include splitting pieces of wood lengthwise and gluing them onto walls. The output is a relief surface with protruding bars. To prevent the finish from getting too rough, the bars can be glued with the smooth side out. Lining is also popular: it can be used to decorate not only walls, but also the ceiling. And also in the interior of a loft, designers like to use slats, focusing on one wall.
Wallpaper
The loft style allows the use of wallpaper. Most often, they imitate an untreated wall. Wallpapers are divided into:
- liquid - a flat surface without joints is obtained;
- photo wallpaper that can imitate material: concrete or brick;
- non-woven - resemble plaster.
White wallpaper is a classic, it will always be relevant. This color maximizes the space. White wallpaper can imitate plaster or brick. Brown and green are natural colors and can add warmth to a room.
Gray is considered the ideal wallpaper color, because it perfectly imitates concrete, plaster, looks harmoniously with other finishing materials.
Plaster
Plasterer allows you to create cement-concrete industrial walls with minimal cost. It is necessary to choose plaster in neutral colors: gray or white, since it is important to stick to cool shades. The material is great for the living room. The light color of the material is appropriate in the bedroom - it gives it sophistication. The plaster must match the design of the room. Decorative plaster is a practical wall covering, it is highly durable, moisture resistant, and environmentally friendly.
Stone
Artificial stone is often used in loft-style projects. The variety of collections allows you to choose the perfect texture and the desired shade. Artificial stone is easy to install. It is enough to choose the stone tiles you like and use the glue to finish the walls. Stone tiles are used to decorate not only walls, but also columns, a fireplace, and doorways.
Design ideas
You can make a beautiful finish with your own hands. It doesn't even take long. There are different options: artificial stone, wallpaper, painting. Acrylic painting includes simple steps: the first step is to sand the "bricks", and then, getting rid of sharp corners, clean the wall with an ordinary broom or brush. Further, the wall is covered with a primer, and after that you can paint it with paint. It is best to apply the paint with a sponge to create a natural background.
For an aging effect, you can take a dry brush and walk it over the surface. The color of the paint depends on the preferences of the owner of the house (they mainly use red), the only rule is that the seams should be lighter.
You can also paint on the wall. Drawings can be bizarre or reflect historical events (but they need to be shown from the ironic side), for example, Brezhnev's kiss. On the wall, inscriptions are often made: quotes, slogans, various mottos. 3D wallpaper in the loft style helps to save on natural materials, while at the same time they create the required atmosphere. Wall decoration depends on the size of the room. If space is limited, it is best to paint the walls.
In a small space, concrete does not make a very pleasant impression.
Wall decoration of individual zones
Loft is a style that allows for eclecticism. That is, the walls in the same room can be decorated in different ways. The bed can be zoned with wood material, embodying the comfort of home. Wood goes well with red brick. You can use a non-standard technique by combining the bathroom and bedroom area. For zoning, a matte sliding partition is suitable.
Sometimes one finish is enough for zoning. The living room, for example, can be decorated with brown brick, while the dining room can be decorated with marble-patterned porcelain stoneware and black paint. Often, zoning is carried out using furniture: a sofa, a bar counter. Separate areas can be decorated as desired: decorated with vintage clocks, posters or metal structures.
Examples in the interior
A non-standard watch model is sure to attract attention. It can be placed on an accent wall. The clock can be made of a log tree or in the shape of a bicycle. Wooden panels also look great on the walls, but there is one rule - they should not be new, it is best to look for models at a flea market.
Retro lamps look great on the loft walls, for example, Edison lamps, which have a variety of shapes. To fill the room with warmth and soft light, there must be a lot of them. Pictures are replaced with posters if you want to add atmosphere. Posters with a retro party theme or a cityscape in black and white might work. In small rooms, designers urge the use of mirrors: they visually increase the space.
