Arrangement of any territory presupposes the presence of a fencing fence. A mandatory attribute of such a design is a gate to ensure unhindered access to the object. Such systems are used both in industrial enterprises and in private areas. Products of this type can vary in complexity and design. Preliminary preparation will allow you to choose the best option for the product, taking into account all the nuances.

Peculiarities

Gates are universal enclosing structures that are installed at the entrance to a specific object or private area. Today there are many varieties of such designs, which allows you to select them depending on the purpose.

Regardless of what type of gate is considered, the product consists of several main elements:

  • Canvas. This part is the core of the entire system. Depending on the design, there may be several canvases. Some models can have complex geometric shapes that can be used to create unique designs.
  • Supports. These products take on the main load created by the sash or leaf. The shape and technical features depend on the way the gate is fastened.

The gate has several distinctive features:

  • Simplicity. Some modifications do not require knowledge and experience in working with different materials.
  • Durability. Quality products can last up to 15-20 years with proper care.
  • Ease of management. Today, all types of gates are complemented by special hinges, rollers and other systems that simplify the opening of the leaves.
  • Variety of designs. Products are manufactured using a variety of materials and approaches. This allows you to get not only durable, but also beautiful products.

Views

The gate is an integral part of many businesses and private estates. These designs must solve several universal problems. Today you can build them yourself, using special drawings or sketches. Depending on the technical parameters, the door systems can be divided into several types.

Recoil

The wing of such a gate moves parallel to the fence or one of the walls. The main components of the products are the canvas, cantilever beam, rollers and supports. The fixing scheme for these attributes depends only on the selected type of sash and its location.

The frame is displaced by a cantilever beam and rollers.

The most popular type is cantilever doors, but there are both suspended and rail systems. The latter, for example, are very similar to cantilever ones, but the movement is carried out along a special rail. There are also so-called folding gates. In them, the sash, as it were, enters into itself. This is achieved by using a metal profile of various thicknesses and its fastening. Sliding gates are universal, as they can be installed both in the country and at an industrial facility.

Among the disadvantages are the need for free space on one side, as well as the high cost of products.

Swing

This type of gate consists of one or two leaves that open in an arc. The use of swing systems today is very diverse. They are used both in private households and in large agricultural enterprises, where additional fences are needed for territories. The construction of these gates is one of the simplest, which led to their widespread use. For their installation, you will need metal and welding, with the help of which the canvas frame is cooked, and after the gate is installed in the right place. Today swing gates are used as entrance gates.

One of the disadvantages of the canvases can be considered the need for space in front of them for their free opening.

Roll

A feature of such structures is that the canvas is wound on a special shaft when moving up. This was made possible by dividing the canvas into small sections that are interconnected. In theory, rolling gates can be installed outdoors as protective systems, but this process is quite labor-intensive, so they are installed in garages or warehouses, where you can attach the frame to the base of the building. Among the disadvantages of these structures, one can single out their low strength.

There are varieties in which the canvas does not roll into a roll, but folds into an accordion, but they are used quite rarely, since they are not so practical.

Sectional

Doors of this type consist of a large leaf of several sections, which moves along special guides. Similar systems are used in the construction of large warehouses, garages and other industrial facilities. To increase the thermal insulation, a heater is inserted into the canvas. The gate swings up, so no additional space is required near the base. Some modifications can be supplemented with windows and wickets.

Among the disadvantages are the high cost and limited use (installation is carried out only on solid bases).

Swing-out

This type of door is a kind of sectional modifications, only here a solid leaf is used as a base. The rest of the functionality is practically no different from the similar type.

Materials (edit)

Theoretically, a gate can be made from almost any material. Today, several types are used for such purposes:

  • Metal sheets. Often, for such purposes, a professional sheet is used, which is selected by thickness and color. The canvas itself is formed from it. Please note that not only the frame is sheathed with iron sheets, but also the top layer of the roll mechanisms is formed. To protect the metal, the surface is covered with PVC solutions.
  • Pipes. Both round and shaped products are used. Homemade gates are often made from a profile: you just need to weld the blanks correctly.
  • Metal corners. They are needed to create or strengthen the frame. This material is not applicable for heavy gates.
  • Wood. This material is the most affordable and widespread, but wooden gates are less and less common today, since they are quite demanding on climatic conditions.
  • Metal rods. Decorative elements are made from them. They are the basis of forged gates, which are distinguished by originality and beauty.

How to do it yourself

Doors can be radically different from each other in design and technical parameters. The construction of some modifications is technically impossible at home. These include suspended or rolled varieties.

Before you start building a gate in a private house, you should take into account several recommendations, act in stages.

  • Decide on the type of structure you plan to build. Today, many people prefer rolling systems, but they need free space along the fence. This must be taken into account when planning. At this stage, it is advisable to make all measurements in order to have data on which the main parameters of the canvas will be calculated.
  • Calculate all the parameters of the curtain and the wicket (if there is one). To do this, it is better to make a small drawing, on which all the main dimensions of the future sash should be applied. Particular attention must be paid to cantilever and fan systems: for them, accuracy is most important.
  • Stock up on a tool. The construction of some types of gates requires not only a hammer and welding, but also other auxiliary tools: circular, grinder and many others.
  • Before starting work, buy building materials in the required amount: plastic pipes, professional pipes, rollers, hinges and the like. The required set is determined by which gate you are going to build.

Installation of supports

Technically, supports can be called the elements of the system that hold the canvases in a certain position. These structures take the main load, so they are built from durable materials. The simplest option is to install fence posts for swing systems.

It consists of several sequential steps:

  • Initially determined with the location. Often, for double-leaf gates, the support posts are located at a distance equal to double the width of one leaf plus a small margin. It is also important to consider the side of movement of the web. If it opens into the courtyard, then you need to leave room for plowing.
  • Concreting of pillars. Concrete structures, wooden beams or metal channels of various thicknesses are used as supports. They are selected depending on the weight of the gate. When concreting, it is important to deepen the pillars by at least 50 cm. It is advisable to position them strictly vertically, since any displacement can affect the ability to close the sashes.
  • When the concrete is poured and the pillars are exposed, you need to mount a stretch so that the pillars do not change positions while the mortar is solidifying.

The installation of a support system for sliding panel doors is a more complicated process.

It can be described in several points:

  • Digging a ditch under the lower support beam. It will take the main load from the departure track. The moat is located along the opening, and its length often does not exceed half of its width. The depth of the pit reaches 1-1.5 m.
  • Construction of the beam. This structure consists of a steel channel and metal supports that are welded to it. As a result, the whole structure resembles the letter "P". The channel is installed with the legs down, its flat side must be flush with the ground.
  • Concreting. When everything is ready, the ditch with the support beam is poured with concrete. It is important to control that the elements do not move in space. The beam must be in a horizontal plane. If this condition is not observed, then the movement of the departure track along the rollers will be complicated.
  • When the support beam has frozen, they begin to form the side support pillars. They are needed to optimize the folding structure. Closers, support rollers, motion sensors and other auxiliary attributes are mounted on them. Many experts recommend that you first make decorative posts for the fence, and then attach the rest of the parts to them.

As for armored gates or sandwich panel structures, they are not installed outdoors. These systems are attached directly to the building frame, which acts as a support.

Some modifications are equipped with a metal frame, which is easy to attach at the factory.

Mounting

Before proceeding with the installation of the gate, they should be assembled. Swing and retractable systems are considered the easiest to assemble. It is necessary to consider the technology of construction and installation of swing-type structures.

It can be broken down into several stages:

  • Installation of the frame. The sash can be made of wood or metal. The latter option is preferable, since the metal is stronger and more durable.Initially, the profile pipes are cut into blanks, which, when folded, should form a rectangle. The corners of the elements are connected by welding. To strengthen the product, metal corners are welded at the joints, giving rigidity.
  • Sheathing. When the frame is ready, it is sheathed with profiled sheet, wood or Rabitz mesh. If you want to get a beautiful and unusual design, then forging elements can be used as decor. They require experience in working with metal, because it needs to be bent, giving a certain shape. If you don't have experience, you can purchase ready-made options.
  • Fastening. Hinged loops are welded to the finished canvases and support posts. It is advisable to do this before laying the stone, so that both halves of the loops can be perfectly aligned. If the hinges are welded correctly, you can simply "slide" the flap onto the support pin. At the very end, locks and a wicket are installed.

Installation of sliding gates is much more difficult. It involves performing the following operations:

  • Construction of a metal frame. It is made of a strong profiled pipe of great thickness. The blade length is often about 50% longer than the opening width. This is necessary to create a kind of counterweight. If the width of the web is small, the counterweight can be omitted. The technology also involves cutting metal into blanks with their subsequent welding at the corners, which need to be given special attention. Vertical supports should be welded along the entire length of the frame, to which the sheathing will then be attached.
  • Installation of the support beam. Outwardly, it resembles a profile pipe with a longitudinal section. The length of the beam is equal to the width of the bottom end of the gate. It is attached to it using spot welding.
  • Sheathing. Profiled steel sheets are placed on top of the frame. They are fastened with special self-tapping screws that are not afraid of moisture and do not damage the metal.
  • Installation of rollers and top guide. Support rolls and are attached to a metal platform. It is desirable to fix it by welding on a channel, which acts as a base. The rollers are securely fastened with regular screws. The top guide is a small bar that moves along the rolls. The rolls, in turn, are attached to the support posts. They do not allow the canvas to move to the sides when moving. The procedure ends with the installation of removable polypropylene plugs that are attached to the ends of the pipes, preventing moisture or dirt from entering them.
  • Gate installation. When all the systems are fixed, you should put the canvas on the rollers, test it. It is advisable to perform all operations with at least two people, since the gate is rather bulky and heavy.

Automation

The frame of many gates is made of metal, which increases its weight. Opening such systems manually is not always convenient. They solve this problem with the help of automatic drives. It is impossible to make them yourself, since this requires special equipment. Automation is installed on roller shutters, sliding and swing gates. This process can be broken down into several sequential steps:

  • fastening the drive. It is a motor with gears that drive the entire system. They are located inside a special case, which allows them to be protected from external factors. At this stage, the device is adjusted relative to the web so that the rail moves without load.
  • Rail fastening. It is fixed on the canvas so that it coincides with the inner gear. It is important to take the product in length with a small margin. When fastening, the gate must be completely closed.
  • Customization. In order for the motor to move the sliding gate, it is necessary that the teeth on the gear and on the rail coincide.Combine them with special methods, which you can ask experienced craftsmen about.
  • Connection. The engine is connected to the electrical network of the house, while using sensors that allow you to open the gate using a telephone or a regular button.

If the automation is used for swing gates, then it is somewhat simpler. Here pump-based systems are used. To connect the mechanism, one end of it should be screwed to the canvas, and the other to a brick post. After that, the system is connected to the electrical network using various sensors and controllers.

Tips & Tricks

Installation of any type of gate requires certain skills in working with metal or other similar materials. To get a reliable and durable design, it is advisable to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • select only high-quality materials for the gate. Do not use secondary raw materials, as they will quickly deteriorate and the gate will lose all decorative and mechanical properties.
  • Before starting work on a project, it is advisable to draw up detailed drawings. They are needed in order to correctly calculate the loads, as well as to select the necessary materials.
  • It is advisable to entrust the installation of electric drives to experienced specialists. Do it yourself only if you are sure that you can fully understand all the nuances.
  • Purchase roller systems only from specialized stores. In them, you can issue a guarantee for the operation of this mechanism in order to replace it with a new element in the event of a malfunction.

Beautiful examples

Although it is not so easy to build a gate, craftsmen with "golden" hands do it. They often give their products a special flavor:

  • Here is an example of an automatic opening garage door. The task of the master was to select the right material for the canvas and reliable automation. He succeeded in both. The gate is beautiful and easy to use.
  • This wrought-iron gate for large arches is a real work of art. They are made according to an individual sketch by an experienced craftsman, therefore, they are presented in a single copy. The gate really adorns the home ownership.
  • A simpler option is a gate made of boards. They look simple but stylish, especially when combined with a natural stone fence.
  • The owner of this site made a comfortable folding accordion gate from corrugated board. It turned out to be an inexpensive and original version.
  • This picture is a great option for a practical hanging model, which is also called a hanging model. The gates are matched to the style and color of the house, so the whole ensemble looks beautiful.
