Beautiful wrought iron gates in landscape design
The gate should be not only durable but also beautiful. However, there are few designs that can be compared in elegance to forged products. Applying them correctly, in accordance with the principles of landscape design, is the only way to create a beautiful, graceful environment in your backyard.
Peculiarities
Wrought iron gates harmoniously combine such valuable properties as high security and external beauty. The widest range of patterns allows you to make the "protective shell" of the site individual and leaves few people indifferent. Moreover, such a fence itself testifies to the wealth and excellent taste of the owner of the land. The problem is different: forging cannot be cheap by definition. And therefore, if you want to use it, you should try to make decorative designs yourself.
Please note that forged products are quite heavy and require strong holding structures.
Even if you use only one wicket, all the same, their mass turns out to be significant and puts a lot of pressure on the supports. Pay attention to whether the safety of the area near the house is ensured, whether the structure is original, whether it meets the requirements of landscape design.
Sketches help to prevent the appearance of errors, in which they necessarily reflect:
- frame (the shape of the entire product and rigidity depend on it);
- fastening parts;
- awnings;
- decorative details;
- locking devices.
The exact dimensions must be specified for any of these components. Also, the geometric shape of the shutters is selected in advance. Design implies taking into account the location of the stiffeners, gaps between them, methods of attachment to the fence. If it is conceived to install a wicket, its location is also marked. Drawing up more detailed schemes than for conventional gates is important, because a large mass of forged products increases the risk of error, and also increases its danger.
Manufacturing technology
Instructions on how to make a forged gate step by step with dimensions is not limited to drawing up sketches and drawings.
It is recommended to take:
- sheet steel no more than 0.1 cm thick;
- peaks;
- twisted rods, which are made of metal 0.5 cm thick and a shaped pipe with four edges (the largest section is 0.14 cm).
If thinner steel is used, it will look bad and unreliable. When using thicker material, you will have to turn to professionals, since you hardly have the necessary equipment and equipment for it.
As for the quantity, after a preliminary calculation, it is advisable to increase it, leaving a reserve of 30-40%, then you will not face problems if something goes wrong.
Intending to create a blind gate, immediately select the material with which the sashes will be filled, also calculate the need for it. After collecting the raw materials and preparing the necessary tools, get to work.
Forging can be cold or hot.
When processing the second method, the metal is heated until it becomes soft, and they begin to give the product the desired configuration. However, do not forget that bending and trimming elements will increase their size.
Forging cold metal, bending it with the application of strong pressure, is safer, but you will have to spend no less effort.If you do not want to do the preparatory work, it is worth purchasing ready-to-use kits - their choice is large enough to satisfy almost all needs.
One way or another, when the forged parts are ready, they need to be welded. Initially, they clear the site where they will work. Of course, everything that can burn is removed from there, and warn your family. A number of channels, the dimensions of which are 0.2 m smaller than the workpiece itself, are placed on the leveled ground or on a welding table. The surface is required 200 cm longer than these parts.
Be sure to check this surface and the layout of the channels on it using a hydraulic level. If you need to make a broken contour or a radius surface, cut out a rack of the size indicated by the drawing.
The accuracy of geometric shapes is checked by measuring the diagonal distances with nylon threads. Having found a discrepancy in their length, immediately eliminate it and only then continue to work. The part is placed on the welding table, once again they are convinced that the angles are equal to each other, and the joints are firmly welded.
The lower part of the gate is always made with a right angle. If sagging appears during welding (and it is almost impossible to avoid them), these defects should be cleaned off with a grinder with a special disc. They begin to create a broken edge by drawing a line on the sheet and cutting it exactly along it. For cutting along lines and in other necessary cases, use an electric jigsaw.
After cutting, the prepared block is combined with the sheet, they are connected with a semiautomatic welding machine. The remains are attached to each other with clamps, welded and waiting for natural cooling. To obtain a radius element, a couple of blanks are made, the sash is placed on top of a steel sheet and tacked by welding. Measure the bar going up (increasing in comparison with the measurement by about 1/3 for greater reliability) and cut off a piece. One of the sides is grabbed into rigid holders and bent. So, the required radius of the structure appears.
To make an element with a radius, the diameter of the part must exceed the dimensions of the profile. The same steps are repeated with the following blanks. The radii are placed on the upper lobes of the flaps, the edges are cut off and welded. Be sure to look, before applying current to the electrode or acetylene in the hose, whether the fasteners are correct, whether there are any surpluses. When the product cools down, it is brought to perfection using angle grinders.
For your information: if the radius is very large, it is not recommended to obtain it by bending.
It is better to use a template, increasing it by 1/3, and cut the metal on the right side, after which, holding the workpiece, slightly bend the opposite edge. Carefully approach the shaping of the bar and the peak, since it is these details of the forging gate that are the most colorful and aesthetically pleasing: all experts believe so.
Twisted rods are made from quadrangular blocks heated in a crucible and twisted after clamping as many twists as you want to get. The semi-finished product is certainly straightened. The picks are made more difficult. The first step is cutting squares from steel sheets, adjusting its geometry using grinding machines. The product is brought to a white tone, the stencil is flattened with a hammer.
Sharp stripes are always hardened by taking out to cool in the air in winter or spilling out in summer. Then the product is inspected, and the detected irregularities are grinded. Having made a complete set of a rod and a peak, they again compare them with each other so that all the parts fit together, and proceed to the final welding.
If you prefer to use ready-made elements, rather than making them yourself, you still need to cook the frame; the required thickness of the steel sheet can reach 1.5 cm. How much exactly depends on the complexity of the gate design: the more sophisticated they are, the more metal is needed. It is also necessary to increase the thickness when an iron sheet is welded on one side.
The pipe from the profile is cut, from time to time it is turned, carefully watching so that the geometry of the corners is not disturbed. First, all parts are spot welded on flat surfaces, otherwise the structure may be twisted. The frame is checked to exclude the appearance of distortions, then the seams are welded with an inverter. Using a welding machine, a lock and a handle are attached to the resulting frame, after which the metal surface is treated with a grinding machine. If it is planned to make a blind gate, insert the sheets of metal into the frame and secure by welding inside.
Now take the inverter and weld the decorative elements to the front side of the frame, being vigilant that they are symmetrical on all doors.
Be sure to grind the resulting thing in open areas with a grinder, and in narrow ones - emery will help.
When the gate is forged and welded, the supports need to be made stronger. It is best to use brick-lined steel pipes. The pillars are supposed to be deepened by 0.7-1 m (so that they are below the freezing level), and the width of the recess should exceed the pipe diameter (at most) by 0.1 m.If you make it larger, the support may skew under load. Perpendicularly inserted pipes are covered with a layer of rubble and reinforced with cement.
When the cement hardens, you need to weld the bars to the pipes (each width is 60-70 mm, and the heaviest structures require the use of 3 bars per door). Then they lay a brick so that each next seam overlaps the previous ones.
You will definitely need a trowel. Having completed the laying, hinges are welded onto the doors in accordance with how the support fasteners are located. From below, a pair of loops are cooked in one direction, and from above they are welded in the opposite direction. This approach excludes the removal of the gate by unauthorized people. Be sure to arrange a full check, if somewhere the mechanism is jammed, the case is skewed, then these defects must be eliminated immediately.
The finishing of forged gates is most often carried out by staining with compounds with a matte look.
The metal is cleaned with a grinder (even a gate that is just made or assembled from ready-made components does not eliminate this obligation), then it is primed and treated with anti-corrosion agents.
Views
A detailed description of the manufacturing technology (assembly) of forged gates is very important, but no less important is that they are of various types. So, swing openwork structures can be opened inward or outward of the yard area. All depending on where there is more space. It is recommended to use the opening to the inside so as not to interfere with traffic and people walking. However, if your house is isolated or located at the very end of the street, this consideration does not matter.
Products with a profiled sheet are distinguished by their versatility, since the strongest steel is used for their manufacture. As a result of processing by rolling equipment, the surface is covered with a trapezoidal relief - this is not only beautiful, but also much more reliable than flat metal. Profiled sheet is most often produced with enamel coatings. This material does not corrode slightly and can be moved to another place if the need arises.
On the forged gates, the corrugated board is attached with self-tapping screws, beforehand, fastening corners are welded to screw them. Many enterprises and even private craftsmen offer ready-made kits with profiled sheets (both removable and fully welded).
Products that are exclusive in appearance make it possible to obtain such a method as cold forging. The problem is that it requires special equipment and is expensive. Such methods are suitable only for large enterprises and organizations, and small workshops are engaged only in hot forging. Cold bending of the rod gives it increased strength compared to the normal state.
Geometrically and technologically complex elements, artistic decorations can only be created on special machines.
Self-made doors using the cold method are unprofitable. Together with them, you should immediately prepare the gate, fences, entrance groups. Or sell forged items constantly to order. If both ways do not suit you, it is more profitable to buy ready-made blocks and simply apply them.
Any type of wrought iron gate, including sliding gates, can be hot forged. However, it will not be possible to save on equipment; moreover, it can only be used independently if all precautions are taken. It is imperative to have a supply of running water to cool the heated metal. Using a gas burner, you can heat a bar up to 1.4 cm in diameter, and instead of an anvil, an inverted rail will do. Such a toolkit is sufficient to obtain large design details.
Sliding wrought iron gates are divided into three main subtypes:
- rail;
- cantilevered;
- suspended.
An unambiguous advantage is that no additional space is required either on the street or in the yard. Even very heavy structures do not have hinges and the load is evenly distributed. It will be possible to open and close the entrance smoothly. In the case of using overhead and cantilever gates, it will be less necessary to clean the snow in winter, and the consoles and rails allow vehicles of any height to enter.
The weak side of sliding gates is that additional space is required for the canvas to move, and this place is only along the fence.
The manufacture of almost all types of forged gates necessarily requires the use of welding. But not all of their parts are metal; they often create products with polycarbonate. The use of this material allows you to inexpensively create a gorgeous-looking gate; while the protective properties are quite satisfactory. Polycarbonate lasts long enough, but it must be carefully selected according to the level of light transmission. Entrance structures can be painted in a variety of tones, as long as they are in harmony with the surrounding elements and the house itself.
Polycarbonate structures are not only simple to install, but also do not catch fire, are mechanically strong, can be combined with other materials and operated in different temperature conditions. If you want maximum naturalness and naturalness, you need to choose solutions with wood. Often the frame is filled with clapboard. Wood can be used both for all doors as a whole, and for the wicket separately.
Double-leaf forged gates are better than single-leaf gates in that there is no need to open them completely once again. When people enter or leave the yard, this is quite enough. It is important that the options with a single sash have a large mass, and therefore create an increased load on the supporting elements.
Automatic wrought iron gates are good not only because they make everyday life easier and increase security. It's a fun way to highlight your commitment to modern technology. Additional security features include photocells and magnetic locks.
Style and decor
Dealing with the technical features of forged gates and their different types can take a very long time. But it is equally important to find out the details of their appearance. It should be noted that the fences obtained by the forging method are perfectly combined with the Euro barrels. But keep in mind that the elements cut from the profiled sheet do not look very presentable, they easily lose their paint. It is more correct to choose products with rounded edges, as it looks much nicer.
To make the appearance meet your expectations, there is only one way - to follow the recommendations developed by experts. Their execution allows even inexperienced people to achieve excellent results. Look, first of all, not at the drawing, but at the cost of the project you like.The most expensive are the blind gates, complemented by a complex ornament, and even made in an atypical geometric shape.
If elite fences are not available to you for financial reasons, you should prefer options based on corrugated board or metal pipes.
Professionals warn against overly elaborate jewelry, even with sufficient funds. Not only can this create a sense of tastelessness, but it can also impair the functionality of the finished gate. Even fairly widespread lion designs are not always appropriate. Sometimes it is worth leaving the canvases just painted in a certain color and not engaging in other experiments.
The selection of the appearance is clearly tied to the concept in accordance with which the house and the yard are designed. Consider this when you draw up the door drawings. It is considered undesirable to deviate from the style of garage and entrance gates, because this immediately creates a contradictory and strange feeling. It is also important to immediately decide on the performance of the entrance group as a whole. It can contain deaf elements, it can be made in the form of a lattice, and there are also combinations of these options with each other.
An impenetrable barrier is suitable for those who dislike even the thought of violating privacy. In addition, this type of design makes maintenance easier and safer. It doesn't make any sense to choose deaf samples if your fence is low or made of mesh. The level of protection when using openwork gratings is not much lower, in addition, a thin structure will cost much less, because its manufacture requires much less metal consumption.
Sail capacity of solid forged gates is excessively high, and no weight of them can guarantee that the fence will withstand strong winds. Blown through grates are much more reliable in this respect. If you can't figure out which considerations are your priority, choose a mixed type of fence. Most often, a solid strip in it goes from the bottom or in the middle.
For your information: its lower location makes it difficult for small flightless animals to get inside, and the middle one is more resistant from the wind and better covers what is happening in the yard.
The design of sliding gates is very stingy, since any embossed protrusions will interfere with the use of the gate in full, will not allow them to be closed. The classic style is found most often, especially since in relation to the gate, it combines a number of directions. These are not only old Gothic solutions, but also Baroque, for example. The key feature of the classics is the simultaneous embodiment of severity and elegance. Coloring imitating bronze or gold, plant, leafy and fruit ornaments, as well as simple lines are often found.
Classic gates always seem to soar in height. At the same time, the idea of the quality and invincibility of the fence is invariably carried out. Baroque immediately stands out for its festivity and abundance of pretentious elements, volumetric details.
More modern approaches, such as modern or high-tech, have their own characteristics. So, modernist welded gates do not have pronounced symmetry, chaotic patterns and lines that give a smooth bend are preferred. The furnishings of summer cottages and country houses better correspond to the country style, which requires filling the frame with wooden elements.
But remember that wood is less reliable and requires more intensive maintenance than metal.
It so happens that you can neither choose a style, nor understand whether a dragon or other drawn character is suitable as a design. Then it is more correct to contact specialists. They can be considered both designers and architects.
Installation and maintenance tips
The installation of a gate to the courtyard of a private house is considered to be performed according to all the rules only when pipes from 10 cm in cross section are used as pillars. To prepare the fixing solution, take 25% of cement and 75% of sand (by weight in a dry mixture).Do not weld the grille tightly onto the frame, as a small gap will only improve perception. Remove excess anti-corrosion agent with a soft cloth. It is recommended to install gates and fences at the same time.
The swing type is most often made from a pair of doors, the height of which is 160-180 cm.If you want trucks to enter and leave the yard, the width of the passage should be 320-350 cm.For passenger transport, 260 cm is enough.It is better to make barn hinges ...
Relatively light gates are suspended by two knots, and heavier ones by three.
Typical width of wickets is 1 m. Its style should reproduce the general appearance of the gate. When it is required to bury the pillars in springy soil, below the freezing point, a frame in the form of a letter P is cast from concrete. A pipe should be welded to the reinforcement located inside the frame. Only such a scheme will prevent premature destruction and deformation. The door clearance is most often 50 mm, and if you increase it to 100-150 mm, they will easily open even after heavy snowfall.
Do-it-yourself care involves wiping with a damp sponge, processing with aerosol preparations and specially impregnated napkins. Corrosion protection products must be renewed at least once every 4 years.
Locking mechanisms should be lubricated as needed, as soon as they start to make noise or move too tightly.
Beautiful examples
To figure out which option to choose after all, and which gate is right for you, we recommend that you look at the given photos. Even if you don't find a perfect fit, they can still be a good incentive to search.
Here is an unusual, truly original gate. The middle is filled with a unique lattice pattern, while the sides are made of solid metal. Although everything is painted in one tone, it does not seem too gloomy, does not create bad emotions.
The two-tone solution is also very attractive: the larger outer rectangles are made of iron, and the internal figures inscribed in them imitate natural wood. Artistic forging looks impressive in the above photo: the straight lines of the peaks vary in height, end with tips looking in one direction, and the main part of the lattice is decorated with curls.
But a wrought-iron street gate doesn't have to be dark. For example, this is what white fences look like, divided into three tiers in height. Each tier is decorated with decorative elements of a special kind. And here is a more voluminous solution, in which the outer stripes of white are harmoniously combined with a rich blue background.
Wooden inserts can be the most abundant, even overshadowing the outwardly metal parts of the structure. Here, four vertical posts are made of metal, top, bottom, and even a figured array above the main part of the structure. Everything else is in moderately dark wood.
In the courtyard, the railings are capable of emphasizing the external attractiveness of the gate and creating a harmonious ensemble with them. Here, for example, they are of exquisite black color, which, according to the principle of contrast, is combined with the white color of the steps. Together with the desaturated reddish tone of the porch bricks, the exterior looks even better.
Our acquaintance with forged constructions is completed by semi-antique gates. There are two-leaf structures with wooden filling, and a symbolic image of the sun inserted into an ordinary wooden block, and many other options.
The final decision, of course, is up to you and only you. But now, having figured out the features of selection and installation, having familiarized yourself with the basic principles of gate design, it will be easier to make it!
