Choosing an awning for a garden swing
Garden swings in private backyards are no longer a rarity. Today they do not need to be made by ourselves, the market presents a large selection of designs, from children's single to large family ones, as well as spare parts and components for them. Bars, mattresses, pillows and awnings are purchased. It is about awnings that will be discussed in the article.
What it is?
The canopy is a kind of roof over the swing. It is attached to the upper beam with holders in the form of a metal frame. This product is made of special impregnated fabric. Such a coating is resistant to large temperature fluctuations, elastic enough so as not to rub on bends.
A garden swing awning is needed not only to improve the appearance. It performs other functions as well:
- protects people from the scorching sun;
- protects the paint and varnish coating of the swing from ultraviolet radiation, thereby preserving the original appearance of the product for a long time;
- saves from light rain, flying leaves and even occasional bird droppings;
- options with a mosquito net protect from intrusive insects and dust.

The awning is usually sold complete with a swing. But if for some reason a replacement is needed, then it is better to choose a new version of the same type as it was originally. Sheds differ in design, size, material. Awnings are designed for double rectangular seats or for square swing beds. They are also made folding or stationary. The folding cover is most often made of light metal. It reliably protects from the sun and rain, but strong gusts of wind can blow it off the mounts. Such a roof can be folded back and fixed; when folded, the windage of the structure is reduced. However, in regions with strong winds, it is better to have spare mounts.
Stationary awnings are a permanent structure, similar in appearance to a flat or gable roof. An awning made of moisture-resistant fabric is put on over the structure. This coating can be easily replaced if it becomes unusable. There is another type of canopy - shelter awning. In addition to the roof, it has a hanging rubberized fabric that protects the swing from all sides. Any bad weather conditions (wind, scorching sun, rain) are not scary with such a shelter.
A very good awning with a mosquito protective net, which completely covers the swing, hanging from the roof. Hiding behind such an awning, you can fully relax, as the quality of rest changes. Do not pester annoying insects, dust, rain drizzle. Even the sun's rays are scattered and do not bake. There are several types of mosquito nets.
- With a zipper going from top to bottom, located in the center of the structure.
- With two vertical zippers sewn into the sides.
- With solid mesh (no zippers). Such a mesh is not stretched like the previous ones, it has a free volume and can be easily lifted. This type is stitched to the awning. There are also options that pounce on top of the roof and drop to the ground.
Material
Several types of fabrics are used for awnings.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
The fabric consists of several rows of synthetic threads (nylon or lavsan), which are covered with a polyvinyl chloride film. Polymer plasticizers add elasticity to the product. The density of PVC fabric is different, it is determined by the number of threads per square centimeter. There are two ways to cover a synthetic canvas with PVC.More expensive and reliable is casting, in which the fabric is immersed in a molten impregnation. Each thread is enveloped, a reliable monolithic product is obtained. The second way is cheaper. The finished fabric is laminated by press welding on both sides. This option is less reliable, since fragmentary PVC peeling occurs. Often, awnings made of PVC fabrics are varnished, which makes them even more durable.
PVC awnings have a lot of positive qualities.
- They are durable, able to withstand heavy loads, without deforming at the same time.
- Sheds provide good protection from weather disturbances. Rain and snow do not harm them at all, since the products are water-repellent.
- The coating reacts calmly to sunlight. It does not fade and does not transmit ultraviolet light.
- Due to its elasticity, the fabric can withstand large temperature fluctuations.
- PVC has increased wear resistance. The awning retains its shape well even during long-term use.
- The coating is resistant to aggressive environments, which allows the use of household chemicals in the care.
- The material does not cake during storage. It looks like new every next season, so there is no need to purchase a replacement version.
- If force majeure happens, PVC is easy to repair. It welds well when heated, forming a stable strong seam, and in some cases, repair is possible without a seam.
Oxford fabric
This is a high-quality water-repellent fabric that is used for sewing jackets and raincoats. It comes in different densities. For awnings, a material is produced that looks like a mat on the weaving of threads. It is used to produce tents, sports equipment, curtains for gazebos and baths. The fabric contains nylon and polyester. The awning is covered with polyurethane, thanks to which it can withstand any rainfall. The product can be machine washed with chlorine-free powder.
- water-repellent;
- durable, wear-resistant;
- does not absorb dirt, easy to clean;
- withstands temperature conditions from - 50 to + 100 degrees;
- elastic;
- has a budget price.
Tarpaulin fabric
This is a new Chinese development; today it is also produced in Korea and Vietnam. In many respects, the new product is significantly superior to the usual PVC. The product contains polyethylene fibers tightly intertwined with each other. The finished canvas is laminated on both sides with polyethylene. The color of the fabric is green or blue.
Material characteristics:
- weighs little;
- incredibly elastic, which allows it not to lose its shape under any circumstances;
- has high wear resistance and durability;
- withstands heavy loads;
- does not allow water, steam, sun rays to pass through;
- antifungal impregnations allow fabrics to get wet in the rains all summer long without compromising their appearance;
- the fabric does not absorb moisture, remains light even after a shower;
- withstands temperature fluctuations from minus 60 to plus 150 degrees;
- is inexpensive.
Sometimes raincoat fabrics with waterproof impregnation are used to create awnings. Such products are removable. They are lightweight, but not strong and reliable enough. However, customers often prefer to purchase them because of the variegated colors and beautiful appearance.
It is necessary to choose fabric for a canopy taking into account the climatic conditions of the region. The length of the warm season during which the swing will be used should also be taken into account. If you live in a hot climate and light winds, you can purchase a light, bright tent. If rain is a common occurrence in your area, and strong winds often happen, then you need a durable water-repellent fabric, the color of which will mask the traces of weather troubles.
