Knowing everything about a retro-style interior is very important and relevant. There are a number of actual requirements for the design of a semi-antique children's room, a bedroom and other rooms in a retro style. It is equally important to study the key gizmos for decoration, the general features of renovating an apartment in the old style.

What it is?

It is possible to understand the main features of the interior in a retro style if you take into account that although it is called semi-antique, in fact, the style of the house of the 60s of the twentieth century is rather reproduced. Previously, people simply restored the level lost during the years of the World War, and for a very long time there was no time for some design delights. At the turn of the 1950s – 1960s, a certain turning point came around the world, and the search began for something original, bright and giving room for imagination. Of course, then it was not called a retro style - on the contrary, very active creative searches were carried out. In the 21st century, this approach is no less popular, at least among creative people.

But one must understand that sometimes the word "retro" means the reproduction of the spirit of other periods - from the middle of the 19th century to the 1970s, inclusive. Probably, the 1980s will soon be added here, because they are already beginning to emerge from actual memory, turning more into an image. However, one has to understand, first of all, precisely with the "narrow" interpretation of the retro style - with an approach that reproduces the design of the 1950s – 1960s.

At the same time, one should not think that this is some kind of template, because it is not so much the original design of the past era that is being reconstructed, but the idea of it.

An essential feature of any retro-style room - this is very important - is its modernization. After all, here you have not only to walk and admire, but to live, therefore considerations of aesthetics recede into the background. You can even use completely new furniture and decorative items. They will fit into the atmosphere no worse than antique ones, if they are selected correctly and correspond to the owners' ideas about “those times”. The focus is on such three aspects as:

  • how to furnish a room;
  • what color scheme to use;
  • what auxiliary accessories can be used in this room.

The first approaches to retro style, outlined in the 1950s, are lively and simple. At this moment, the post-war laconic mood was still preserved. Therefore, complex geometric shapes were not used, and surfaces were painted only in a continuous monochrome method, without patterns. Chrome elements were actively used.

In the following decade, the approach changed - although the furniture did not change at first, its upholstery now receives floral patterns in some cases. The number of vibrant color combinations is growing. The emphasis is placed not only on brightness, but also on non-standard combinations, on an innovative approach.

The situation is gradually changing - the number of original decorative items is growing. There is already furniture of streamlined configurations, which were often placed on thin legs. In the 1970s, instead of bright colors, natural warm tones were actively used, intricate patterns began to be used, and the geometric configuration became more complicated.

Finishing options

Sten

When decorating a house in an old style, fabric wallpaper is mainly used. Some of the suppliers offer diverse collections of old-fashioned wallpapers with extraordinary prints - they are developed individually. A well-prepared canvas will greatly simplify the finishing during repairs. The color is chosen arbitrarily, the possibilities for variation are very great. But you can use another option - paint the walls. Sometimes different colors are used, but they are selected with analysis. The main thing is to provide a harmonious combination. Typical combinations are orange-blue, yellow-green, brown-beige.

In the modern version of the retro style, individual fragments of a brick wall are widely used that do not have a special finish. This way of emphasizing the old mood is very good. Interior doors are usually made of solid solid rock. Sometimes a tree is deliberately aged. Symmetry and proportional performance are very important features of the classic color scheme.

The fittings have not only a functional but also a decorative role. The use of both traditional straight and arched structures is allowed.

Ceiling

In the vast majority of cases, natural wood is used when renovating a retro-style ceiling. It is allowed to use both monotonous and mixed colors. The boldness characteristic of the style is shown, liberating their imagination and taste. At the same time, the general attitude towards antiquity should not be violated. Apartment ceilings can be plastered.

The wood on the ceiling must be sanded. The choice of color depends on personal preference. However, in a small room, it is recommended to avoid luscious prints and concentrated paints lowering the ceiling. It is useful to observe the same requirement when working in the country. For your information: if you only need to mimic the old-fashioned look, it is useful to use stylized stretch ceilings.

Paul

When using fabric wallpaper, it is recommended to use a light-colored laminate with a wood look. When walls are painted, the floor is usually covered with the wood itself. Sometimes linoleum is also used, which must be covered with a "checkerboard cage". Another traditional retro solution for the floor is a round carpet, which adds coziness and comfort. Important! With all the importance of classical norms, sometimes it is worth deviating from them, focusing on your personal taste.

Designers can recommend long pile carpets and ceramic flooring. It does not have to be the traditional white color. Black and white, black and turquoise, white and red, black and red options help to diversify the appearance. It should be borne in mind that the selection of materials and their appearance is largely determined by exactly what era they are trying to imitate.

Selection of furniture

The most important thing is to decide on a purchase budget. Few people can afford to buy items made over 100 years ago. Therefore, furnishing a home in the spirit of Victorian retro is very difficult. You can save money by using modern, antique-styled products.

1950s furniture is slimmer and sleeker than ever. During this period, plastic is already actively used, including vinyl, as well as plywood. Therefore, the choice of the most suitable solution is greatly simplified. If it is decided to reproduce the spirit of the 1960s, then it is advisable to focus on rather bright colors and patterns of psychedelic content. Geometric ornaments are also welcome.

It would be quite appropriate to use the style of pop art; but whatever approach is used, it is required to place maximum emphasis on the individuality and uniqueness of the interior.

Furniture in the style of the 60s of the twentieth century can no longer only contain vinyl and other plastic.

Its composition contains a rather high proportion of glass. The use of "futuristic" (as they were seen at the time) geometric shapes is recommended. Some kind of light kitsch is allowed. The main thing is not to disturb the harmony in the interior.As for the colors, then red and blue tones in all their variety are welcome.

Retro from the 1970s is notable for the growing popularity of bulky headsets. People then got bored with color experiments, the popularity of muted tones grew rapidly. Among them, the following colors were in greatest demand:

  • Orange;
  • olive;
  • yellow (including mustard);
  • burgundy;
  • Brown.

And the 1970s was characterized by the flourishing of the hippie style. Glossy and polished surfaces are in demand. Alternatively, you can focus on the "early high-tech". Furniture from the 1980s is much more varied.

When imitating her, it is appropriate to choose shabby-chic, and neon, and mirror samples, but then the design group "Memphis" became a real "squeak of fashion". Returning to the atmosphere in the spirit of the 1960s, it is worth noting that then they often tried to combine things that were deliberately incongruous according to traditional ideas. The combination of glass and plastic resulted in sophisticated vases and attractive rounded chairs.

Important! With all this, the demand for wooden furniture did not decrease - it continued to remain an “eternal trend”. Therefore, even today, such decisions will be quite appropriate.

Cabinet furniture from the 1950s, and partly from the 1960s, can have a distinctly variegated look. Massive wardrobes were used only occasionally. In the overwhelming majority of cases, low elongated products were used. As for wood species, alder, oak, beech and ash were out of competition. It is advisable to give preference to light brown, honey and beige colors.

In the 60s of the twentieth century, plastic chairs were very widely used. They should not be confused with those that can be seen in summer cafes. These were extraordinary products, sometimes even unique in their appearance. Their creators constantly took care of the variety of lines. Flashy colors were actively used.

Decor and accessories

No matter how important the furniture and finishing materials are, it would be foolish to forget about gizmos for interior decoration. Be sure to use as many ornaments and decorative objects as possible, especially if the style of the first half of the twentieth century or an earlier period is reproduced. Regardless of the time frame of the concept, colorful lightweight curtains are used. Retro style can rarely do without an abundance of books and personal photographs on the walls.

Choosing textiles, you should give preference to chintz and cotton. Typical patterns are cage, stripes, polka dots. The retro kitchen is decorated with colorful dishes. In the living room, you can seem to leave forgotten vintage suitcases. In addition, the following solutions are also used:

  • vases;
  • floor lamps with non-standard shades;
  • striped carpets;
  • chrome and leatherette (when reproduced from the 1950s);
  • garlands, neon lamps, complex lighting equipment (this is already a reference to the 1970s).

Color palette

For early retro from the 50s of the twentieth century, acid colors are most appropriate. Blurry tones are not used, everything is necessarily saturated. The modern edition is dominated by olive and mustard colors. Poorly matching tones can be applied simultaneously, but not mixed. The following colors will also be perceived positively:

  • cream;
  • olive;
  • citric;
  • bright pink;
  • pure black and white (as background).

We decorate different rooms

The kids 'or teens' room is retro furnished with wooden items and recliners. Calm colors are preferred. Old-fashioned patterns are on the rise again. Depending on the texture, prints of various sizes are combined. The following points will be relevant:

  • black and white drawings;
  • table lamps with metal legs;
  • panels;
  • painted walls.

A bedroom "from the 50s" should have square furniture without patterns on the upholstery. Be sure to take into account the emotional impact of appearance. A good option would be to use restored or aged furniture. The bath and shower area will acquire a characteristic mood when using "airy" white cabinets.

Massive furniture, ceramic accessories and outdated taps are welcome, and aptly selected textiles will help to complete the composition.

In the living room, it is appropriate to apply solutions such as:

  • old dressing table;
  • wide elongated sofas;
  • fireplaces with "cracked" tiles;
  • chocolate, blue and acid green colors;
  • wallpaper with an extremely simple pattern;
  • carpets of bright colors;
  • antiques or aged items.

Design examples

  • One of the options for retro-style in the interior looks something like this - the necessary flavor is created, first of all, due to well-chosen furniture of an emphasized old-fashioned look. The used accessories also evoke thoughts of the "old" setting.
  • At the same time, a room decorated in a Victorian style looks more solemn and pretentious. The necessary mood is created by both dark curtains and original chairs, and specific colors, and a special type of wallpaper.
  • This solution also looks good - a room with a fireplace, old-fashioned furniture, ornamental plants, paintings and other wall decor.
