Ceiling skirting boards in the interior
Ceiling plinth - this is a rather insignificant detail of the interior, but it has a great influence on it. Skirting boards not only emphasize different design styles with their appearance, but also hide minor flaws at the junction of the walls and ceiling. At the same time, we do not know much about them, and this is a big omission that should be corrected.

Skirting boards can be used in any room, combining them with the selected interiors. These finishing elements can be matched to different types of ceilings. There are even special models for stretch ceilings that hide the gap between them and the wall.
Few people know how versatile a skirting board can be. Believe me, there are people who pasted them over every room in their house, but they will be sincerely surprised to learn that there are some types of skirting boards. And this is not surprising, because no one had told them about it before.
Store sellers rarely give advice on skirting boards, as buyers don't ask for details. And so it turns out that the necessary information often passes by.
Meanwhile, only by materials, ceiling moldings are divided into 7 types.
- Polyurethane... Probably the most expensive type of skirting boards, which is no accident. Polyurethane elements offer increased strength and flexibility. In addition, they are easy to carve, which is why even the most complex ornaments can be depicted on them. They can also be painted with regular paint.
- Wooden... Unpretentious wooden skirting boards are most often used for flooring. However, there are much more elegant options that are installed on ceilings. The wooden skirting board looks luxurious and gives the interior a certain aristocracy.
- Foam... Not the best option in terms of quality: it cracks easily, bends poorly. However, for many buyers, all these disadvantages are offset by the most affordable price.
- PVC. PVC skirting boards are a very simple installation option. They are easy to cut and install. They serve for a long time. They have many color options, and you can also paint them yourself.
- Styrofoam... This material is the "big brother" of foam. But it differs in that it is quite flexible, durable and reliable. Easy to paint and wash. And also immune to mold and mildew.
- Duropolymer... Highly environmentally friendly material, impervious to high humidity. The most durable option available.
- Gypsum... Plaster elements are environmentally friendly and reliable. And their main advantage is their aesthetic appearance.
These are the baseboards depending on the material of manufacture. But that's not all.
For example, 2 types of skirting boards are distinguished by purpose.
- We all have familiar fillets. Fastened at the junction of the wall and ceiling.
- Moldings. They have only one adhesive side, and they are attached right in the middle of a wall or stream, creating a kind of pattern.
Shapes and sizes
Available materials are not the only difference between skirting boards. There are also sizes, for example.
In most Russian houses, you can find a narrow plinth, the width of which does not exceed 5 cm. But more daring decorators prefer wide models, the sizes of which start at 16 cm.
The wide skirting board looks luxurious, which can brighten up the familiar interior. However, it should be understood that it is not suitable everywhere.
Fillets also differ in their shapes.... Again, direct models are familiar to us, but, in addition to them, one can also distinguish flexible and with channels. Flexible skirting boards bend at any angle, allowing you to create smooth shapes and interesting solutions. Products with a cable duct look normal on the outside, but inside they have space for masking the wires.
These elements differ in their texture: are smooth, extruded and injection. Although the words are complex, they are actually familiar to everyone. Extruded models are those that have concave and convex grooves on their surface. Injection moldings are called baguettes, along which there is a relief pattern.
Styles and design
Ceiling skirting boards can be installed in any home without exception. And this is due to their diversity. Having looked through the catalogs, you can always find a suitable option specifically for your interior. The most popular skirting boards when decorating houses:
- in a modern style (simple shapes and classic light or dark colors);
- in minimalism (thin baguettes with a restrained design);
- in the loft style (light baguettes with a simple pattern);
- under high-tech (smooth backlit skirting boards look great);
- in the classic style (the classic looks good with plaster, wood and polyurethane fillets, carving and stucco molding are welcome);
- with a Scandinavian interior (no-frills white fillets).
And these are not all design options. It is best to select skirting boards individually for each home and even room.
For example, white fillets are used in the interiors of most houses, as they are classics that go with everything. But you can try other options, focusing on your taste.
Like most decor items, skirting boards come in a wide variety of colors. Black, brown, gold, beige - all of these colors can be found in most hardware stores. If it seems that this is not enough, you should not forget that you can make a colored plinth for your apartment yourself.
How to choose for different rooms?
Besides different styles, skirting boards give variations for different rooms of an apartment or house.
For each room you need to choose your own version of fillets. We are talking about sizes, and about materials, and about colors.
For example, the room has high ceilings. If you set the usual narrow skirting boards, then in the end they will simply be lost, that is, they will not spoil the appearance, and will not improve. In such a room, it is better to mount beautiful broad skirting boards that will complement the interior.
But for low ceilings, a wide baguette is not suitable. Here he will occupy a significant part of the wall, hiding the already small space of the room.
Or let's look at an example with materials. Everyone knows that choosing materials for finishing a bathroom should be done carefully, given the high humidity in it. Skirting boards are no exception. The bathroom can be installed fillets made of duropolymers or expanded polystyrene - they do not absorb moisture, so they are great for rooms with high humidity.
Or, for example, the kitchen. The humidity is quite high here, but the most important thing is that food is prepared here. Therefore, the kitchen should be used exclusively highly environmentally friendly materials.
Beautiful examples
To finally consolidate the result, let's look together at examples of how well-chosen ceiling plinths transform a room. This will help you get the idea and possibly postpone some of the options for future home renovations.
Let's start with the bathroom. The owners of the house have a fairly spacious bathroom with a high ceiling. And this is how they decided to decorate it. Agree, it looks very elegant. And just an example of what we talked about earlier: an excellent combination of wide skirting boards with a high ceiling.
Or, for example, kitchen decorated in a classic style with a slight touch of renaissance. Here the skirting board has become a full-fledged part of the interior, adding to and improving it profitably.
Separately, it is worth dwelling on the selection of colors that match the overall color of the room itself.
We said that fillets are suitable for any room, but here someone installed them even inside a covered balcony. A black skirting board was successfully chosen, going in a cut with the white color of the balcony itself, which became a kind of highlight of the interior.
