Choosing a sideboard for the kitchen
Until recently, a sideboard for the kitchen in the associative row was firmly associated with an old dacha or grandmother's house. However, today's interior fashion considers such a piece of furniture not only acceptable, but also very organic in modern design. Therefore, if suddenly you were thinking of getting rid of the inheritance from the past, do not rush.
Such expressive and bright details incredibly decorate the interior, add expressiveness to it, bring the atmosphere to the desired "degree". Cozy, eye-catching kitchen cupboard looks great in a modern style.
What it is?
A sideboard is a type of cabinet for storing kitchen items, food, appliances, textiles. Previously, a sideboard was called a likeness buffet with glass decoration. In addition to the kitchen, the sideboard will organically fit into the dining room or living room. The design of a modern sideboard cabinet consists of the following elements.
- Bottom part, intended for storage, either in the form of a cabinet equipped with drawers, or in the form of doors, which can be either just wooden or decorated with ornaments.
- Top part, consisting of open shelves with no doors at all or with glass. In any case, the contents of the top are on display.
- Space between the bottom and the top, it is used as a tabletop or stand, but in modern models it may be completely absent.
- Cabinet topif it exists, and is not mounted in the ceiling, it can be used as a shelf for decoration: candles, figurines, flower arrangements.
A modern sideboard most often looks more concise than its retro-gathering. Its finish is unobtrusive, devoid of intricacy, so it allows you to fit the wardrobe in almost any interior... So even if you decorate your kitchen in style hi-tech, modern, eco, country or minimalism, you can safely consider the sideboard as a design item. Also, financial capabilities do not matter much, there are quite inexpensive models in a showcase style.
The size of the sideboard can be different, only the possibilities of the kitchen area, the height of the ceiling, and personal taste are important here. As for furniture factories, in almost every price segment you can find many variations of sideboards - narrow, with one sash, wide, with two or more doors.
The sideboard can take up little space or stand up almost along the entire wall.
As for the internal organization of space, everything is also not the same here. The sideboard can be filled various drawers, shelves, dividers, both very functional and decorative. In any case, there is plenty of storage space there, which will free up space from unnecessary parts and organize it correctly.
Consider whether there is enough room in your kitchen to accommodate a sideboard, as in a small room, it will look bulky and heavy... This furniture attribute is quite demanding, so you should not consider too luxuriously decorated cabinets in small kitchens.
The smaller the space, the more laconic the sideboard should be. In small kitchens, you can safely consider corner structures, they are more compact, functional.
Advantages and disadvantages
Before deciding on such an acquisition, it should be remembered that in addition to significant advantages, the sideboard also has some disadvantages. The advantages can be safely attributed:
- a large amount of storage space - such a cabinet is very spacious, consists of convenient drawers, from which utensils, dishes and other kitchen items can be easily removed;
- the ability to choose a wardrobe both without excessive decor, pretentious details, and with them;
- a correctly chosen sideboard will perfectly fit into the style of your kitchen, regardless of direction;
- the interior with a sideboard looks original, elegant;
- if your kitchen is made in any retro or classic style, the sideboard will add aristocracy and status to it;
- more often they are made of natural wood, therefore they are environmentally friendly.
All the advantages, unfortunately, can be crossed out by a single, but very serious drawback. Sideboard - independent piece of furniture, it will not allow you to fit it into a small room, where it is necessary to save and use more ergonomic space.
If the kitchen area allows you to experiment with furniture, be sure to consider a sideboard as one of the options for kitchen cabinets.
Just remember that a high-quality natural wood wardrobe will not be very budgetary.
Varieties
Kitchen cupboards can be quite varied, however the main types are distinguished:
- a closed sideboard - it must necessarily have doors that hide the shelves from public view, while most often there is at least a small window through which the objects inside are easily visible;
- an open sideboard - without doors, it displays all the objects inside the upper cabinet, and often the lower one;
- a sideboard with a table top, in which the top and bottom can be of any type;
- three-tiered sideboard with doors, shelves and a fully open tier.
Materials (edit)
Previously, sideboards were made exclusively from natural wood and were quite expensive. In modern furniture design, wood is not inferior to its positions, but the possibilities of its processing make the choice easier.
Natural wood of a valuable species is still a constant leader, especially if you are planning an interior in one of the pretentious styles: Rococo, Baroque. They serve for a very long time, look expensive and status, facades are made in various decorations, decorated with carvings. Their price is high. There are other disadvantages, for example, sensitivity to the effects of the external environment: moisture, temperature extremes.
Unfortunately, a sideboard made of natural wood can swell or shrink, which leads to deformation of the external character: loss of color, poorly closing doors.
Chipboard, MDF for a long time already in popularity they are not inferior to the array, and often surpass it, since the cabinets of them are much more budgetary. As for the appearance, modern technologies make it possible to create objects from these materials both in a laconic restrained design and in an antique one, with a pretense of pretentiousness. This material is enough durable and wear resistant.
Metal and plastic rarely, but still used to make sideboards. Looks great in minimalist, industrial, futuristic interiors.
Use in different styles
Depending on the chosen style direction of the kitchen, a sideboard is also selected.
- Classic... A carved solid wood wardrobe will fit perfectly, since the classic style implies the use of luxurious, expensive pieces of furniture. He will add a touch of aristocracy and sophistication to the room.
- Provence... A carved or standard white sideboard is best suited here. The atmosphere of the French countryside is perfectly emphasized by exquisite small details: door handles with antiquity effect, pendants, cameos.
- Country... This practical style will perfectly complement the lacquered sideboard in a discreet design. A lot of details are not welcome here, so the fittings are as laconic as possible. But the number of open shelves should be considerable.
- Minimalism, loft, eco and other modern styles will be good if you place a functional sideboard in them, in which filling comes first, not appearance. Visually, such a cabinet should have simple lines. Decorative finishes will overload the interior.
