One of the most important functions in any home is performed by a properly selected bed. It is difficult to imagine a complete and harmonious bedroom without this piece of furniture. Currently, the furniture market is literally overflowing with a variety of models with various designs. The most popular and convenient are products with a rack bottom.

What it is?

The main components of any bed are the frame and the base (bottom). Most of the bases are made from iron, natural wood, or cheaper composite materials. The comfortable characteristics of the bed directly depend on the design of the bed bottom. Slatted options are complemented by orthopedic mattresses, on which sleep and rest become doubly pleasant and healthy.

As a rule, the slatted bottom is a rigid and durable frame to which slats are attached (in other words - lamellas). They have a slightly curved shape and are located at a certain distance from each other.

Features, pros and cons

More recently, stores have sold beds that feature short-lived mesh or solid bases. Such designs have a number of significant disadvantages and are less convenient to use. The appearance on the furniture market of slatted bases made a real sensation, and today such systems are widely used in the production of high-quality orthopedic beds.

Let's list the main advantages of such constructions:

  • Rack bases have excellent ventilation properties. Air easily penetrates them due to the indentation between the lamellas. In such conditions, the mattress will last much longer, and its hygienic properties will always be at their best.
  • Most often, the slats in the bottom are made of wood. This material is environmentally friendly and absolutely safe for human health. The most inexpensive and practical are specimens with birch and pine slats.
  • Slatted bottom is relatively inexpensive when compared to other bases. It can be purchased separately and installed in existing furniture.
  • Comfortable orthopedic beds with slats are easy to assemble and disassemble.
  • High-tech products are especially popular recently, in which there is a function of adjusting the rigidity and position of the back. These beds can be customized according to the personal preferences of the owners.

But, like any design, the rack bottom has its own negative sides. There is no support between the lamellas. Because of this, after a while, the surface of the mattress may become wavy. If there are no shock absorbers at the base, then it will not withstand heavy loads and only people of medium-sized build can comfortably accommodate on it.

If your bed has such a bottom, then a simple box-spring mattress should not be placed on it. Such things can form defects in the form of deflections, which will have an extremely negative effect on the spine during sleep and rest. On average, rack bases last about 10 years. The term is considerable, but shorter in comparison with other types of grounds.

Varieties

Bases with wooden lamellas are manufactured with different functionalities. Often, such designs are equipped with popular in our time interior items with lifting mechanisms.Such systems are present not only in spacious or compact beds, but also in sofa beds, ottoman beds and sofas.

Designs with folding mechanisms differ from each other in the principles of operation:

  • The most reliable and durable are considered manual mechanisms, since they do not have a lot of moving parts. However, they are less convenient to use, because at the moment of opening you have to independently hold the base together with the heavy mattress.
  • They do not have the longest service life spring mechanisms... They are difficult to climb, but they do a good job with their main task. After a while, the springs in the structure stretch and lose their elasticity, which is why they have to be changed.
  • The foundations are rightfully recognized as one of the highest quality with gas shock absorbers... Such systems operate very smoothly, smoothly and quietly. To raise them, you do not need to make any extra efforts at all.
  • Recently, upgraded folding flaps have appeared on the market. bases with electric drive... They are very easy to use. Such structures are set in motion using a special control panel that comes with the kit. Such structures are equipped with legs made of durable metal. They have an optimal height and are easy to attach and detach from the furniture frame. The main purpose of these parts is to provide additional support for the bed and its mobility.
  • Beds are in great demand today, in which orthopedic bases have the function of adjusting the stiffness of the rails... There are designs in which you can customize all the lamellas or only the details on the top and bottom.

With the help of adjustment, you can create the most comfortable sleeping bed. But don't think that foundations with similar functions are less solid. In the production of such rack structures, all the necessary features and nuances are taken into account.

Types of rails and holders

The slatted base is aimed at optimal distribution of body weight over the surface of the berth and softening the level of rigidity of the orthopedic mattress. The slats or slats in these designs are made of various materials. For regular use, natural wood options are recommended. Cheaper chipboard parts are brittle and easily damaged.

The standard width of the slats at the base varies from 5 to 10 cm.The maximum indicator is 12 cm.Such slats are located across the bed, and the distance between them is on average 5-7 cm. Also, in the orthopedic bottom, narrower slats from 3 to 4 cm. Such elements should be located closer to each other and fastened more often. One quality base should have at least 15 wooden battens.

The lamellas are attached to the frame using special holders. Most designs contain rubber fasteners with additional shock absorbers.

Such lat-holders are designed for significant loads. A bed with these details does not start to creak over time.

More affordable are the bases in which the lamellas are attached with plastic holders. They are less durable and resistant than rubber options. When using a berth with such a base, do not exceed the maximum permissible loads.

Dimensions (edit)

The standard dimensions of the orthopedic bases are:

  • for single beds: 70x200 cm, 80x200 cm, 90x200 cm;
  • for one and a half sleeping models: up to 120x200 cm, 140x200 cm;
  • for double options: 160x200 cm, 180x200 cm;
  • the size of the bases for cots is usually 160x90 cm.

How to choose?

The choice of furniture with a slatted base must be approached responsibly and deliberately. If you make a mistake when buying, various problems may arise related to the compatibility of the bottom and the mattress:

  • Pay attention to the height of the bed.The body should be at least 50 cm above the floor. Otherwise, getting out of bed will be difficult and uncomfortable. In addition, a low bed is more likely to catch a cold or freeze in cold weather.
  • The orthopedic bed must have legs. Such elements will provide additional ventilation of the bed, which will have a beneficial effect on the life of the mattress.
  • It is recommended to purchase models in which the bottoms have natural slats. The most common are birch elements. They are inexpensive. However, if finances allow, then it is better to purchase a sturdier and more expensive structure with walnut slats.
  • Practical are adjustable rack and pinion bases, options with shock absorbers, transformation mechanisms and other modern additions.
  • The dimensions of the bottom and mattress must match. An overly large mattress will bulge and fall out of the bed, which will negatively affect the comfort characteristics of the bed. If the canvas is too small, then ugly gaps will remain between it and the frame, which will interfere and look unattractive.
  • It is recommended to contact trusted firms and buy beds from well-known and high-quality manufacturers.
