Features of choosing a gas lift for a bed
A bed is not only a sleeping place, but also a "storage" of things (bed linen, children's toys or other popular household items), which is located under it. To provide full access to this place, you have to raise the mattress, which, by the way, is not always lightweight. For this purpose, a gas lift device was developed, which is able to facilitate the function of transforming a sleeping bed.
What is it?
So, let's deal with the very concept of "gas lift". A gas lift is a mechanism that plays the role of a lift of the elements attached to it. Visually, this design looks like this: it somewhat resembles an automobile shock absorber and consists of a cylinder, clamps and a running arm.
The following positions stand out from the distinctive features of the gas lift:
- The gas lift device can be compressed by applying a certain force.
- The operating temperature range of the hoist is -30 to +80 degrees Celsius. The exit of the working zone from this interval by 10 degrees entails a decrease in the gas lift efficiency by 3%.
- It is important to correctly install the gas lift, otherwise the failure of the lifting mechanism is guaranteed.
- The movement of the stem is limited to the maximum possible speed - 300 mm / s. The cylindrical pressure reaches a maximum value of 160 bar.
The advantages of beds using this mechanism:
- Practicality. Beds with a lifting mechanism are equipped with storage space.
- Strength. Gas lifts provide a longer lifespan for sleeping furniture compared to other lifting devices.
- Reduces human stress.
- Ease of operation. In order to start the mechanism in action, it does not take much effort. A child can cope with the mechanism.
- Silent operation of the device.
- Liquid nitrogen used in shock absorbers is completely safe for metal and rubber gaskets.
- Reliability. You are unlikely to have to change the gas lift for the entire life of the bed. Such a mechanism is designed for more than 20 thousand lifting and lowering operations.
- Safe design. The cover protects all structural elements from access, so that the likelihood of injury is very small.
- No dust and moisture under the base. During operation, the tight fit of the frame to the base guarantees a minimum accumulation of dust particles.
- Alternative choice. There is always an opportunity to buy that version of furniture with a lifting mechanism that is right for you.
- Saving finance. Some of the additional furniture paraphernalia can be skipped - there is enough space under the bed for bed linen and other necessary things. Plus, there are no additional investments in this furniture at the entire stage of operation.
- The advantage of gas lift over other mechanisms. First, this mechanism is pretty solid. The fittings are sturdy, while the pull-out elements quickly fail. Secondly, when rolling out, in some cases it will be necessary to free up space for the boxes.
Negative aspects of using this device in beds:
- Lack of aesthetics. Some bed models are designed in such a way that the gas lift is noticeable at the headboard.
- Substandard materials used in the production of such a mechanism, in most cases, become unusable after a while. But in some cases it is impossible to determine the quality of parts when buying.
- The high cost of a bed with such a device.
Varieties
There are only two categories of such devices. They are:
- Automatic. The principle of operation of such a mechanism is quite simple: in the process of raising the bed, the gas expands, which begins to press on the piston. That, in turn, presses on the area, forcing the structure to move upward. An oiled gasket helps to activate the braking, which allows the rest of the process to be smooth.
- Frictional. The difference between this construct of a gas lift for a bed from the previous one: the absence of a damping process. The gas pressure in this design is underestimated, which allows the bed user to stop the lifting process in any position. This approach practically does not occur, since it is not in great demand.
How to choose?
It is possible that a person has already bought a bed, but does not know what kind of gas lift to put on it.
Then our recommendations for the selection of this device:
- Let's calculate the weight of the bed: the average value of the design of a single bed is about 30 kilograms, from the supplier we find out the weight of the mattress - orthopedic, for example, it weighs about 40 kilograms. Total: 70 kilograms.
- We will determine by the marking of the gas elevator which device is suitable for us. The gas lift passport contains numbers in Newtons. Equate 1 kilogram to 10 Newtons. The most optimal option in this case would be the choice of two elements of 800 Newtons each.
It turns out that our selected mechanisms will be able to lift 160 kilograms.
However, this is not true, since the force is distributed under a certain angular component, and over time, the mechanism can weaken. In some cases, you should not look at the manufacturer's recommendations, as they offer much more stock than they can get. From this, the structure itself will close, which is unacceptable. In addition, to raise it later, it will take incredible efforts.
Replacing the lifting mechanism
The mechanism can stop working for many reasons: wear of elements, seizing, etc.
The following are the steps to replace the hoist in sequence:
- We disassemble the sleeping place. First of all, the installation of elements is done on the furniture body, and then on the base.
- If there are seats for fastening, we plant the fasteners on these holes.
- The shock absorbers are mounted with the cylinders facing up.
- Assembling the structure.
How to install correctly?
The installation of such a lifting device is quite simple. To assemble it correctly, you must follow our recommendations.
Below are the stages of such an assembly:
- First, you need to make 3-4 holes with a drill for fasteners on the box.
- We fasten the lower part of the device with bolts.
- We attach the corner of the lifting mechanism to this construct.
- It is necessary to lower the base into the frame. We drill 3-4 holes on all sides, while taking into account the position of the lower bar.
- Leave a gap of 5-10 mm between the box and the frame, then tighten the bolts on the upper structure.
- We connect everything together with the help of pistons, fixing them on the top and bottom of the device.
See below for the gas lift installation process.
Before installing the system on furniture, it is necessary to check the prefabricated structure. It should not spontaneously lower itself, or creak or jam during the lifting process.
Selection Tips
We invite readers of the article to familiarize themselves with the following tips that will be useful when purchasing a bed with a gas lift:
- Pay attention to the manufacturer. We do not recommend purchasing a bed in which a Chinese analogue of the device is installed. It is better to give preference to firms from Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey and Taiwan. Today, for example, the products of the Suspa company (Germany) stand out.
- As we said earlier, the gas damper hardware is visible from some angles. Therefore, for aesthetics, the best option would be to purchase a sleeping bed with a color shade close to the furniture frame.
- Compare the load of the gas shock absorber with all parameters. Study the passport for this device.
- Don't trust ads. Manufacturers often use a variety of tricks to attract a customer: discounts, bonuses, etc. Make your choice based on the feedback from consumers who have already purchased the model of gas-lift furniture you like.
- The height of the bed. For babies, a bed with a lifting mechanism that is too high is not convenient to use.
- Pay attention to the presence of a screed for the box. Buy a model that has a laundry drawer divided into compartments.
