How to make a loft bed with your own hands?
Owners of small apartments will appreciate the loft bed. How can you make it yourself? How to organize a working area for adults with this wooden bed? Read on for more details.
Why are such models attractive?
Today, the use of a loft bed is more relevant than ever. First of all, in the first place comes the need to save living space, especially when you need to organize a work or play area, but there are no free squares.
Of course, various transforming furniture has already been invented. Of course, it cannot solve the main problems, but it still helps in some way. But making it with your own hands is very difficult.
The loft bed is very helpful in organizing an economical sleeping and working place.
It is simple in its design and can organically fit into various types of interiors. As a result, both adults and children get the opportunity to find personal space for themselves, even in apartments that are small in living space.
Design features
The design of the loft bed is not very complicated, but at the same time it gives a lot of room for imagination.
First of all, it is a sunbed, which is fixed at a height of 120 to 180 cm, depending on the height of the ceilings and the wishes of the owner. Since such structures have passed the test of time, observing certain rules, it will be possible to say that they are sufficiently stable and durable.
The organization of the bed is such that the place for sleeping is on the upper tier, while a work or play area can be organized under it.
Can fit perfectly here:
- computer desk and chair;
- a desk at which it is convenient to do homework;
- a rack or shelves with books;
- chest of drawers or boxes for storing things and toys.
If the child is still small, then under the bed you can build a small house with a place to play. This can become his personal territory. Naturally, you need to take into account the age and interests of the person who will own such a bed.
Materials and tools for manufacturing
Naturally, when there is a desire and free time, and you also want to save a little, you can assemble the loft bed yourself. What does that require? First of all, quality materials. The first step is to decide whether the bed will be made of wood or metal.
Wooden, at the price of materials and manufacturing method, will be much cheaper. In addition, this is due to the ease with which the wood is processed. It is much easier to purchase and prepare it.
In addition, wood products are lighter and require virtually no additional processing. While a frame made of metal will require not only the experience of the welder and the apparatus itself, but also pre-processing and preparation of the material used.
When choosing a wooden bed structure, you need to know that this will require specially processed beams and boards made of solid wood. You can use MDF, fiberboard, chipboard or chipboard.
So, these materials can be used to organize homemade dressers and shelves, a writing or computer desk on the first level. On the second, you can use the material as a decorative wall decoration or the organization of additional shelves.
If you choose wooden blanks, then you should turn to such types of wood as pine, while it should be of 1 grade.Beech or oak are more expensive, but more durable.
When choosing a bar, you need to pay attention to its section. For a bed to be reliable, it must be 100x100 mm. More slats will be needed. With their help, the stair railings will be trimmed. The required thickness should be between 20-30 mm.
When purchasing boards, pay attention to whether they are curved, impregnated or not. In some cases, you can give dimensions that will allow you to get them in a completely finished form.
You can use a thick plywood sheet to make the bottom of the bed lounger. It is worth saying that despite all the advantages of plywood, it is still recommended to use a bottom made of rails located on special holders. They are made using slats and boards.
In addition to wooden blanks, you need to take care of the acquisition of materials with which the structure will be fastened.
This list will include:
- screws of various lengths. In this case, it is advisable to choose products equipped with a countersunk head;
- nails for decoration;
- joiner's glue;
- stain, varnishes and paint. In some cases, a self-adhesive decorative film may also work.
Of the tools it is worth taking care of such as:
- jigsaw or circular saw;
- screwdriver;
- drill with various drills and attachments;
- everything for grinding, namely sandpaper with a fine grain, a sander with attachments;
- hammer, chisel and clamp;
- tape measure, long ruler;
- the level is large and small.
If such tools are not at hand, then you can rent them, borrow them from friends, or try to replace them with an available similar one.
In some cases, when purchasing timber and boards, planks, you can pre-negotiate their preliminary treatment with wood stain. If you have not previously agreed, then it is easy to do it yourself. Stain will not only protect the wood, but also give it an interesting shade.
Choice of design
The apparent simplicity of the design implies several design options. First of all, you should decide on the size of the bed.
For example, for children under 5 years old, it is recommended to use the dimensions 70x160 cm, in extreme cases up to 120 cm.Pupils and adolescents can make a bed with the following dimensions: 90x200 cm or 140x200 cm, with a height of up to 180 cm.
If we consider only basic models, then they can be divided into three constructions.
Each of them will differ in the way of fastening:
- On four pillars... Its convenience lies in the fact that it can be carried as needed. At the same time, for manufacturing, it is required to calculate well the height of the bed relative to the ceiling. The thing is that the child should sit quite freely, without risking hitting the ceiling. Therefore, you should immediately do everything with a margin, because children tend to grow.
- Has two posts and wall mount... Differs in higher stability and economy in assembly, since materials are saved. It should be understood that moving such a bed will be very difficult, if not impossible. It is for this reason that the maximum bed length and location features should be considered in advance.
- Mounting takes place directly to the ceiling... On the one hand, this is the most original way of placing a loft bed, but on the other hand, it will require accurate calculations, including regarding the methods of fastening.
Now it's worth taking a closer look at the execution methods. Most often, the first and second designs are chosen. They are simpler and easier to assemble and use. These options make it possible to organize there a space with a working area, and not only for adults, but also for children and adolescents.
The third option is more complicated, and therefore it is better not to assemble it yourself, so that later it would not be offensive for the time and money spent.
Among the main nuances of all three structures, it is worth highlighting the staircase. And since this is an attic, which means that it is located at some distance from the floor, you cannot do without it.Considering how to install a ladder, you need to understand that several options are possible.
First of all - placement at a certain angle to the floor. This option is the safest, but it will take away some space from the room. The ladder can be vertical, while it is worthwhile to understand that this option is simply not suitable for small children.
An interesting, but more complicated option is to make a staircase from several compartments of lockers that form steps.
According to the method of placement, the staircase can be installed directly on the facade, and it does not matter from which side, convenience is important or directly at the end. In this case, you should take care of the side from the side of the facade.
After the most suitable model has been selected, a drawing and calculation of the necessary materials are made. And only after that you can contact construction and furniture stores for everything you need to assemble with your own hands.
Assembly
Having in hand a drawing with all the dimensions, it is not so difficult to make a bed, especially if they are all accurate, and the purchased material is of proper quality and well prepared.
It is for this reason that when choosing a material, you need to choose those boards and bars that have been dried and have a moisture level of 18%. Otherwise, in the very near future, the tree will begin to dry out, crack and warp.
Before starting to mount the structure, it will be necessary to grind all the elements of the future bed well with sandpaper or a grinder. This removes all existing sharp corners and chips.
Do not drill or cut holes in advance. It is best to do this during assembly, which will reduce waste and rejects. In addition, before joining, it is recommended to coat all holes with special glue.
As supports, it is required to have a processed timber available with a section of 100x100 cm. It will go to the support pillars and the frame. The frame itself will be a support bar with an outer side board.
They are attached to the uprights with a screw connection. You can use metal corners for this, especially for support bars. And do not forget to check which vertical is next to the bed. For this, a square is used.
In order for the structure to be more reliable, all supports should be fixed at a height of about 30-40 cm.
For this, slats are used, which are fixed at the ends and on the back wall. Do not forget about the fence rails. They will depend on the age of the child. After all, the floating structure is located high above the floor, and safety will come first here.
