The subtleties of painting walls with water-based paint
If you are starting to renovate a room, and you have to paint the walls and ceiling, pay attention to water-based paint. This paint is especially popular because of its ease of use, it is safe, and dries quickly. Even a novice painter can cope with such work.
If you carry out repairs yourself, you need to know certain rules and subtleties of working with water-based paints.
Features of the compositions
Choosing paints and varnishes for the repair of premises, you should know that they can differ in their characteristics, have a different composition, from different manufacturers. Some types of materials can only be used indoors, others are used both inside and for painting walls outside.
The selection of paint must be approached thoroughly in order to choose the right material that is required for the job.
The basis of the water-based paint is water, to which mineral components are added. After the water dries, a strong film forms, which protects the surface from external negative influences and makes the walls and ceiling attractive.
The final result depends on what kind of paint you use. There are such types of paints and varnishes that differ in components:
- Mineral paint... It is made by adding lime or cement to the composition. It is inexpensive, easy to apply, but quickly begins to fade under the sun's rays and is easily damaged.
- Silicate - it is produced using liquid glass. Such paint can be used to paint a room inside and outside, since the material is resistant to sunlight, increased water resistance. Having painted the walls with such paint, you can forget about repairs for 10 years, the material will retain its color.
- Acrylic paints... They are recommended to be used in a dry room; for greater moisture resistance, latex is added to the material. After applying this material, a flat, smooth surface is obtained; in the process, minor cracks on the walls are tightened.
- Using silicone paint, it is possible to fight cracks on larger walls, up to 2 mm. The material is quite expensive, but it has many advantages: the paint lies flat on the surface, passes water vapor, and retains its qualities for a long time.
- For repair work, you can use polyvinyl acetate paintswhich have many benefits. They are used for finishing porous materials such as wood, cardboard, plaster. The material dries quickly, does not have ingredients harmful to health, adheres well to the surface, after drying, an excellent result is obtained.
If you have already decided on the paint, it remains only to choose a good manufacturer of paints and varnishes, the quality of your repair depends on it.
Choosing a paint and roller
The final result depends on the choice of materials and tools. You can choose a vacuum cleaner that will cover the surface without streaks, but it takes practice to operate the spray gun. For home use, it is better to take brushes and rollers.
When choosing a paint in a store, consult the seller: he will help you make the right choice, tell you how to use it correctly, for which premises it is intended.If there is no consultant nearby, you can read the information on the bank or listen to the advice of professional masters.
The materials of the following brands are the most convenient to use, possessing all the qualities for successful painting:
- Marshall;
- Alpina;
- Dulux;
- Tikkurila.
Of course, this list can be continued, all manufacturers are trying to make a quality product that will allow you to carry out repair work even at home without professional help.
After you figured out the water emulsion, you should purchase additional tools and materials. You should buy:
- hard brush;
- soft plastic brush;
- scotch tape for repair work;
- sandpaper;
- a couple of rollers, choose rollers with medium hardness and length;
- requires roller handles that can be changed. The length of the roller handles is 1 meter, 1.5 meters;
- putty knife;
- trays for paints;
- acrylic primer. For processing 1 sq. m of surface, 200 ml of primer is enough.
Find work clothes and suitable shoes in advance, because during the repair work you will not be protected from dirt and stains. Prepare dry, clean rags to remove dirt, blots.
If you have to work with uneven and textured surfaces, it is better to choose rollers from which you can remove the top coat... The amount of pile on the roller depends on how smooth the surface to be painted is. On a smoother side, it is better to use a short-haired roller.
If you are painting a wall from above, it is best to use a tool with an extended handle. For corners and edges, use 50mm, 150mm brushes. Experts recommend painting with a nylon polyester brush, it does not deform during operation, the composition is not absorbed into it.
Run your hand over the brush, make sure that the bristles have not lost their shape, they are easily restored. Choose a brush with thick, long, tapered bristles.
Surface preparation
Before you start painting, you should prepare the surface. When applied to the wall, the paint lays down in a very thin layer, so the surface must be very even, defects and irregularities, chips and height differences are excluded.
Before the start of painting, the surface must be prepared: remove the remnants of the previous coating, clean the walls, ceiling. Stains can be washed off with a soapy solution, wait for the surface to dry and inspect again. If the walls were previously painted, or they have whitewash, such a surface must first be cleaned, it cannot be painted with water-based emulsion. To wash off whitewash from concrete surfaces, warm water with the addition of detergent is suitable.
It is often necessary to level or even remodel the surface. Pay special attention to the plaster, give the wall a smooth finish... If there are cracks or chips on the wall, it is better to choose a gypsum plaster, you can level the walls with alabaster. The next step will be primer - it must be applied to improve the adhesion of the material and reduce its consumption.
It is possible to reconstruct the room, level the walls and the ceiling with the help of plasterboard, from plasterboard sheets creating a relief surface with a varied shape.
Try to free the room from furniture and unnecessary items, so it will be much more convenient for you to work, and the furniture will not get random stains from whitewash or paint. The best option if there is no furniture in the room.
Cover the floor with plastic or any other material. So that the film lies flat on the floor and does not interfere with work, use masking tape, attaching it to the wall. This will save yourself a lot of time cleaning the floors. The foil can also be hung on the door to prevent debris and paint from entering the next room.
Water-based emulsion can successfully paint not only walls, but also the ceiling.If you wanted to whitewash the ceilings, think it might be advisable to paint the room, to make the walls and ceiling in the same tone, so the room will be brighter and visually larger in size.
Water-based paint is quite thick, if desired it can be diluted with water. If you have an electric drill, you can stir the mixture using the mixer attachment... If you don't have a drill, just take a stick and stir the mixture thoroughly. Do not start work immediately after mixing, wait for the foam to settle.
If you want to paint a room a specific color, it's time to add pigment, you can achieve about 200 shades.
Try to make sure that the amount of the mixture is enough for the whole room, as it will be difficult to repeat the exact same tone. It is better to prepare a little more mixture, with a margin. By the way, you can mix the ingredients in the store or do it yourself.
Painting
When purchasing material, study its technical characteristics. Find out the composition, how to properly dilute, find out how to calculate how much material is needed to complete all repair work. Do not forget to check the expiration date, do not purchase an expired product, otherwise the result may not please you... If you have old paint residues at home, look at the date of manufacture and the period of use.
The paint should be applied to the surface in an even layer. This can be achieved if you use a spray gun, but training is required to produce high-quality staining and quickly complete the work. This method is suitable for painting ceilings and walls.
Any surface can be painted with brushes and a roller. In those places where it is inconvenient to apply the composition with a roller, brushes will come to the rescue.... These methods will allow you to quickly finish the job and reduce material consumption.
Using the advice of experienced specialists, we begin to paint the right corner of the window, moving to the door, then again move towards the window. Pour the paint into a tray and roll the roller several times to soak it.
Every time you dip the roller in paint, squeeze it lightly to avoid dripping. It is more convenient to start painting on top of the room, if there are drips or drops, they will then roll out with a roller.
There is a certain technology for the correct application of the composition. It is necessary to roll out the paint in small areas, moving from the ceiling to the floor... You can move the roller in different directions, parallel or laterally, grabbing a little paint, so you will avoid streaks.
After painting 3-4 meters, rinse the roller with clean water, so you get rid of dirt and dustthat got on it. If you painted the walls, but particles of dirt and sand remained, wait until completely dry, remove them with a razor, and then look again, maybe you will have to repaint again.
In order for the paint to dry slightly, 10-15 minutes is enough, so all work must be done quickly.
Try not to take breaks from work, then you can quickly finish it. In the event that you still take a break and the paint has dried, the border may differ... It should be stained 2-3 times. Do not try to paint the room at a time, applying the maximum layer. Wait for the layer to dry, then repeat the process.
If there are left on the wall greasy spots that can show through, you need to clean these places and paint several times... On putty surfaces, the paint lays down smoothly and easily, leaving no streaks and streaks. After the putty, be sure to wait until the coating is completely dry. If you plan to glue the wallpaper after painting, it is enough to apply one layer.
Lubrication of unevenness and sanding is carried out in preparation for an improved painting. In this case, several mandatory operations should be performed: carry out the initial primer with partial grease, grind the greased places, the next step will be the second priming and painting.
