Odorless paint for interior work: the subtleties of choice
Often, when repairing interiors, and especially a residential apartment, paint is used as a finishing material. Walls, furniture, parquet or wood floors made of MDF panels - you can use a special paint for all this. And for rooms in which ventilation is very limited, odorless paints are perfect. They are safe, relatively quick-drying and are great for, for example, working in a nursery.
Peculiarities
As the name implies, the main feature of such paints is the absence of an unpleasant and often toxic odor, which many simply hate. The second important feature, especially convenient for repairs, is the drying speed of such paint.
Depending on humidity, temperature, layer thickness and other parameters, the drying time can be as little as half an hour, or even less.

Safe paints and varnishes can be divided into several varieties:
- oil;
- acrylic;
- water-dispersive;
- latex.
All of these species have specific advantages and disadvantages, which we will discuss below.
Oil
They are oil-based and differ in that they do not have a pungent odor. They include drying oil, which acts as a solvent, and pigment additives. These paints and varnishes can be both colored and colorless; they can be used to paint metal products, wood, and even plaster. In addition, this paint is used for decorative painting - inscriptions, drawings, patterns and the like. Their disadvantage is that they are relatively long-drying.
Acrylic
The most common type of odorless paint. It is used for almost all types of materials. Along with oil paints, such paints are often used for decoration.
Paints and varnishes with an acrylate base have a number of advantages over all others:
- The list of components is completely free of toxins, therefore, there are no smells.
- Safety for builders and residents.
- Fire resistance.
- Wide range of applications.
- Ease of application to the surface.
- A large number of colors.
- A variety of textures.
- Crack-proof coating.
- Fast drying.
- Great resistance to stress and abrasion.
- Resistant to external influences such as humidity, temperature, ultraviolet radiation.
However, there were also some drawbacks: acrylic paints are relatively expensive. Polyacrylates are white, therefore special compositions are used for color design - colors. Using a color scheme, you can achieve almost any tone, the main thing is to choose the right proportions, but in many hardware stores there is a service for selecting the right color scheme. The buyer only has to choose the color.
Even at the production stage, acrylic paints and varnishes are sometimes completed with additives with antiseptic properties. These additives prevent the growth of mold and mildew. This property can be useful when painting wood in rooms with a high moisture content.
Water-dispersive
Water is used as a solvent for dispersion particles, so these paints are considered safe. Water-based paint is used for walls and ceilings.Such paints and varnishes are always white and have high water resistance, due to which, painted surfaces can be washed without fear of damage to the coating. They are odorless and have excellent decorative properties. Just like acrylic paints, water-based paints are white and can also take on the desired shade with the help of tints.
Latex
Latex enamels are also odorless and are not classified as harmful paints and varnishes. With this enamel, you can safely paint various surfaces, such as plaster, brick, wallpaper and others. The difference between such compositions is high strength and wear resistance. Due to the presence of latex in the list of components, such material is not susceptible to dryness and swelling.
These paints can be used to paint kitchens. Initial drying takes place already after half an hour, and complete drying takes about one hour.
How to choose?
To choose the right paint, you first need to figure out which surfaces will be painted. The same water-dispersion paints cannot be applied to heating devices, wood and metals. For example, in the case when you need to paint the floor and the battery, the water-dispersion composition will not work, you should choose another type of paints and varnishes, and for painting the walls this is an excellent choice. In addition, latex compounds are excellent for walls.
For the floor, including parquet, the best choice would be oil paint, which has high moisture resistance and wear resistance.
Acrylic paint is best suited for windows, furniture, doors. It is safe, odorless and dries quickly. Since wood absorbs paint well, such surfaces should be painted in at least two layers.
Examples in the interior
- The bright modern interior in the style of minimalism is decorated in rich, juicy shades of turquoise and burgundy. The bright colors of the floor and ceiling soften the eye-catching colors.
- For lovers of bright, expressive interiors, the option of decorating the walls with orange paint is perfect. To prevent the setting from being too overwhelmed, harsh colors soften the snow-white walls and decoration elements.
