How to use acrylic thinner?
Acrylic paints are widely used today among paints and varnishes. Their components are water, color pigment and binders. The surface dries quickly and has a number of useful properties. If the prepared volume of paint is not used immediately, there is a need for thinners. They should be chosen and applied with great care.
Peculiarities
Acrylic thinner is often confused with acrylic paint thinner. Errors in the use of these substances will not allow achieving the desired effect. Dissolving mixtures are designed to make the hardened paint softer, to simplify its removal from the surface. The properties of the coating will inevitably deteriorate over time, and the drying time will increase. Thinners for acrylic paints are designed to affect the density of the dye, they speed up the drying process and increase the practical qualities of the dye, sometimes increase the color saturation. Thinners and solvents are often confused even by professional traders.
It is necessary to carefully study the label, instructions and accompanying documents before buying.
How to dilute?
Since acrylic paints contain water, it is permissible to add water in small portions. However, you will have to take only clean and free of any foreign components water. Dried paints are diluted using construction mixers in a special container. When the entire mixture is supposed to be used at once, it is diluted in a branded container. The liquid is poured in small portions, otherwise the paintwork material may become too liquid.
You will have to put up with a weakening of color saturation or introduce additional portions of pigment into the paint and varnish composition.
An alternative is to use a thinner: such mixtures are produced in a wide range today. When using them, the coating becomes better, dries faster. Depending on the type of thinner, it can take on a matte or glossy shade. Thinners have a distinct odor, but it passes easily as soon as the mixture dries.
How to dilute with water?
Before starting work, you should find out if the liquid is clean. It is absolutely unacceptable to use hot water to dilute the paint.
Consider the typical proportions used by specialists:
- 1: 1 - when you want to prepare a base coat (moderately thick and evenly applied);
- 1: 2 - when you need a texture that does not spread and is conveniently typed on brushes or rollers (gives a thin layer of paint);
- 1: 5 - the original color is practically lost, therefore it is required to introduce large portions of the pigment (such a mixture must be used on curly and small surfaces);
- 1:15 - This dilution helps to create the impression of a blurry color shift between the full paint in different places.
How to use thinners?
For both artistic and construction purposes, acrylic paints are diluted using approximately the same technology. When the air temperature is low, the paint itself does not adhere well to the surface, thinner will help correct the situation. It is necessary to use compounds of the universal range when work is carried out in rooms with room temperature. Preparations characterized by a low evaporation rate allow the use of the dye composition with significant heating.
The storage of the diluent must follow the instructions. The container is closed with a lid as tightly as possible and placed vertically in a dark cool place.
Acrylic thinner "Chemist" can be used to dilute automotive enamels with pearlescent and metallic effects. With its help, it is easy to remove acrylic dirt from the surface of the painting tool.
Diluent Tamiya copes effectively with a wide variety of acrylic-based paints. Compared to common solvents, it is much better. This composition not only helps to dilute the dye without losing quality, but also safer for health. Completely hardened paint that has stuck together in a thick lump is easier to throw away: it will not do any good.
