When choosing a material for finishing a wooden floor, most often the choice stops exactly on acrylic paints, which have both their advantages and disadvantages. You will learn how to choose the right acrylic paint in this article.

Peculiarities

Acrylic paint has another name common among professional painters - acrylate mixture. It consists of resin, water and special pigments that give it one color or another, since it is initially always white. It can be used to paint any surface, including walls and ceilings, not just wood floors.

When working with acrylic paints, a paint roller is most often used, so the application occurs in an even layer. Many began to use special spray guns, with which the work goes much faster, and the paint is distributed even more evenly than in the case of a roller.

The use of brushes is not recommended in this case, as they can leave hairs and not quite evenly apply the paint. In any case, the choice of tool always depends on the convenience of the worker.

When choosing acrylic paint, you should focus on its features, which may not suit everyone. One of the main advantages of this substance is almost complete absence of a toxic odor. The paint is fire-resistant, wear-resistant and creates a sufficiently elastic coating, due to which the floor is resistant to temperature deformations.

Another advantage is ease of use and fast application... A huge number of manufacturers offer a wide variety of colors, so everyone can choose a palette to their liking.

Of the minuses, first of all, it should be noted the high price of this product. Also, this type is very quickly consumed due to certain properties of the wooden floor, which absorbs most of the product. Most of the paints, regardless of the manufacturer, have low abrasion resistance, that is, it will gradually fade, but for the sake of justice it should be noted that this will happen evenly over the entire surface of the floor.

Another property is a disadvantage for beginners, but at the same time a big plus for professionals.

The paint dries very quickly, so if you opt for acrylic, focus on your abilities as a painter, since not everyone is comfortable with fast drying, for some it may be a problem.

How to choose?

When choosing acrylic paint, you should pay attention not only to the advantages and disadvantages, but also to some other details. To apply one layer, you will need to spend 100-150 grams per 1 m2 of surface. For better wear resistance, it is recommended to apply it in two layers.

You can reduce paint consumption by using a little trick: the agent should be slightly diluted with water or a special solvent. The quality will not change from this, only the color will fade very slightly.

Cover type

When buying an acrylate mixture, you must, first of all, be guided by the type of surface to be painted. Many people buy this product to cover the floor in a garage or other room with a concrete floor. As a rule, concrete paints are cheaper than wood floor paints, and the quality is quite high.

To purchase an acrylate mixture for woodworking, one should proceed from the type of wood covering.The fact is that wood tends to absorb a certain amount of paint that penetrates into microcracks and thus increases the durability of the colored coating.

Depending on the type of wood, the amount of paint purchased should be calculated so that it is sufficient for the entire surface in sufficient quantity.

Prices for acrylate mixtures vary depending on the country of origin. For example, domestic mixtures cost 130-160 rubles per liter, but to purchase foreign funds of well-known brands, you will have to fork out for 1000-1300 rubles for one liter can.

Brands

A fairly large number of brands, both foreign and domestic, produce acrylic paints. But lately there has been a certain rating of brands that have come out on top in this niche. Here is some of them:

  • Tikkurila Is a Finnish brand that manufactures building coatings and other means necessary for repairs;
  • ACE Paint Division - an American company that is part of one of the largest concerns and is engaged in the production of durable paints and varnishes for any coatings. The best among their products are acrylate mixtures of the Royal series;
  • Company Dulux produces a wear-resistant product, for the manufacture of which a personal patented technology called "diamond frame" is used;
  • Derufa is one of the domestic companies that produces aesthetic and durable paintwork.
  • Company "Lacra" is also Russian. She is engaged in the production of varnishes, enamels, primers, antiseptic compounds and many other means for repair. Many dry mixes are sold under this brand, such as cement, putty, gypsum plaster, tile adhesive.
  • Firm Aquastrong produces wear-resistant acrylic paint with increased water resistance and alkali resistance. Their products are inert to the effects of salt solutions, oils and gasoline.

Reviews

There are many reviews on the Web about acrylic paints, and not only from painters, but also from ordinary users who have had time to get acquainted with this product. Most of them are positive. Users most often highlight the following characteristics:

  • High wear resistance and long service life, which varies from five to ten years. This item mostly concerns well-known manufacturers of quality products with an appropriate price.
  • A variety of colors, among which you can find absolutely any color to your liking. The breadth of the palette is achieved using ready-made compositions or by adding dyes to the base paint. As you know, initially all acrylate mixtures are white, and the color is obtained by mixing it with a special pigment. Thanks to this technology, you can get absolutely any color.
  • The tough acrylic polymer layer provides a high degree of moisture protection and provides a flame retardant finish.
  • Professionals distinguish among the advantages and fast drying speed, which makes it easier for them to work.
  • The complete absence of odor is one of the main advantages of acrylic paints. Many manufacturers specifically indicate this feature on the labels as additional advertising and attracting buyers to their product, but in fact this is a natural property of all mixtures.
  • The ease of use of acrylic paints pleases the majority of consumers. They can be applied with a roller, brush or spray gun, depending on convenience.
  • If necessary, it can be diluted a little with water or a special mixture, which saves money.

Of the negative qualities, the high cost of foreign compositions is most often distinguished. Unfortunately, domestic products cannot yet compete in quality with European brands. Many consumers, not calculating the correct amount of mixture for wooden floors, complained about high consumption, which increased costs.
