All about split five-fingered leggings

Welding work is classified as hazardous. Personal protective equipment is used to protect the worker from high temperatures and splashes of molten metal. Particular attention is paid to hand protection. For this, gloves or mittens made of non-combustible material are used.

Split five-fingered leggings are working overalls. They are designed to protect the hands and forearms from harmful and dangerous influences arising in the working area.

They do not look like regular work gloves, as they have:

• increased resistance to punctures, tears, cuts;
• protect from sparks;
• protect hands from burns in case of accidental contact with hot metal surfaces;
• high abrasion resistance, at least twice as high as that of similar canvas gloves;
• softness and elasticity, allowing the worker to freely use all five fingers without loss of sensitivity.

Split leather gloves are used by blacksmiths and steelmakers, as well as other workers in the so-called hot workshops. They work in insulated five-fingered leggings even at low temperatures. As a rule, a special impregnation is applied to the crag material, which significantly increases the ability to withstand thermal loads. For example, gray leggings not treated with impregnation, on which there is no lining, are operated at a maximum temperature of +45 degrees.

Gloves that have undergone the processing process are guaranteed to protect hands from heat, reaching +100 degrees. Strong material requires the same threads to connect the individual parts. Workwear manufacturers use fire-resistant Kevlar threads for sewing. The seams of the leggings are very strong.

Depending on the production needs, leggings are produced in different types. Standard gloves are believed to be 35 centimeters (350 mm) long. The thinnest gray split leather gloves are used for working with small objects. Red leggings are thicker and have stiffer cuffs.

Non-woven lined models are comfortable when working in the cold. Five-fingered leggings are often reinforced with genuine leather inserts. If fireproof leggings are sewn, then a cotton layer that allows air to pass through is inserted. For outdoor work, especially in the Arctic, insulated models are required.

On frosty days, workers are given gloves lined with fur or fleece. Insulated gaiters are distinguished by a wider socket, which allows them to be quickly dropped if necessary.

In combination gloves, the back of the hand is covered with a textile insert, and there is only a split in the palm of the hand. In the process of work, leggings inevitably get dirty, which accelerates their wear. In order to increase the service life of products, their constant care is required. At the end of the work, the gloves must be dried and then gently cleaned with a dry cloth or brush. If you follow these simple requirements, the leggings will last about two years.

The choice of a specific model depends on where the protective clothing will be used. So, for work at high temperatures, welder's leggings are needed, split five-fingered with refractory impregnation. When buying gloves, pay attention to how and with what the connecting seams are made. Threads must meet several requirements at once, be:

• durable;
• fire resistant;
• heat resistant.

The glove should fit snugly around your fingers and not fall off your hand. It should be comfortable to work with all five fingers without undue tension and a feeling of tightness. It is important to choose the right length of the product.

All models of protective equipment should be quickly removed from the hands in case of emergency. Depending on the size, alphanumeric markings are assigned to gloves: L, XL, 2XL. L is 21.5-23 cm, XL is 24-24.5 cm, and 2XL is 25-28 cm. Given the range of parameters, it is worth trying on before buying. So you will be able to choose the most suitable option.
