Strawberries are a favorite berry of gardeners. And even in the smallest plots there is always a place for it, because every year there are more and more unexpected and original solutions for growing berries. Let's consider in more detail the types and creation of strawberry beds.

Where can you split?

In order for strawberry beds to please with a good harvest, first of all, they must be arranged correctly.

When planning all your plantings, you should immediately carve out a place for strawberries and take into account that they need sun. In the shade, you won't have to count on a large sweet berry. In addition, the site must be protected from the wind. Therefore, the optimal place for planting strawberries will be the beds along the fence. She will feel good between the bushes.

For example, currants can grow on one side, and gooseberries on the other.

When choosing a site, you also need to pay attention to the composition of the soil. Strawberries need light soil with good water and air permeability. Acidic soils will not work for this berry, and if this figure goes off scale, the soil will have to be deoxidized. This can be done with ash or dolomite flour. A sandy substrate, enriched with humus, garden strawberries will take very well. If the soil is sandy-loamy, the situation can be corrected by using baking powder. For this purpose, sawdust mixed with ash is suitable. In this case, it is better not to get carried away with peat, since it adds acidity to the soil.

But it is worth considering that even when choosing a beautiful site in a good place with suitable soil, after 3-4 years the strawberries will have to be transplanted. If this is not done, the berries will become smaller, and the yield will decrease. Strawberries can be transplanted to another suitable place for it, having previously prepared it for the needs of the culture.

Other plants can be planted in place of the strawberries.

Dimensions (edit)

Strawberry beds are arranged in a variety of ways. Therefore, it is difficult to say unequivocally what the parameters of the bed should be.

This type of berry is grown in the form of carpet, rows and nests, in addition to many different original options. Everyone chooses their own way depending on the area of the site and its design.

When carpeted, the strawberry grows on its own, releasing a mustache and covering the ground. Weeds have little chance of germinating there. The sizes of such a clearing can be very different. The downside is that, if you do not control the number of new outlets, the berry will begin to shrink over time, and harvesting is very difficult in such a field.

Placing strawberries in the beds ensures larger berries and helps protect the roots from decay by providing drainage strips between the beds. The optimum width of the bed in this case is 20 cm.The distance between the rows should be kept within 40 cm.The height of the bed should be at least 30 cm.When planting, the depth of the hole should be about 40 cm.The distance between the bushes should ideally be about 30 cm.

Tighter placement of the bushes will result in crushing of the berries.

Summer residents with their own hands learned to create the most unusual beds that one can imagine, sometimes embodying very original ideas. Let's consider the main options first.

Warm

To equip warm beds, you need to follow the following stages of their creation:

  • on the site, markings are made for the location of future beds;

  • then they make a structure about 25 cm high from the boards;

  • at the same time, the width of the warm bed should be at least one meter;

  • cardboard is placed at the bottom of the bed, which will limit access to weeds and pests;

  • the next layer will be sand, then compost and soil.

This option looks extremely aesthetically pleasing, it will decorate the site, and if everything is done correctly, then such compact beds will require minimal care. The beds can be square, rectangular, triangular.

"Smart"

The device of such beds in the country is a bit like the previous method, but they will take up more space. In fact, these are ordinary beds in appearance, but with their own characteristics.

  1. To organize such beds, you need to dig depressions in the form of a trench about 30 cm deep. After that, it is necessary to install walls of boards or slate on the sides.

  2. Cardboard is also covered at the bottom. Then, following the sequence, the remains of plants such as corn and legumes, humus and black soil are laid in the trenches.

  3. Next, cover everything with agrofibre on top, it is better to take dense and black. A slot is made for each plant, and bushes are planted.

Such comfortable beds allow you to spend a minimum of effort on caring for the bushes. Moisture and nutrients will last longer in the garden. In addition, weeds will not appear at all.

Pyramid

The organization of such a bed is also simple, but first you need to draw a drawing for yourself with the future pyramid. To make such a structure, you need to make wooden boxes of different sizes. Then they are laid out according to the principle of a pyramid, the space is covered with earth, and strawberries are planted. Taking care of such a bed is also easy.

Beds of this type can be made not only from boxes, but also from other parts, for example, from tires. In order for the decorative qualities of the beds to be more pronounced, the tires can be painted in any color. Such round beds also look very original.

Vertical

These designs significantly save space on the site. In addition, they are quite beautiful, they can diversify the design of the site.

They are made in different ways, choosing the most convenient one. One of the main ones is the installation of plastic pipes, in which holes are made and filled with soil. The sprouts are placed in these holes.

You can make hinged structures that are placed on the fence in 2 rows or even in 3-4. It all depends on the height of the fence. These can be pots with soil or ordinary bags.

Such beds not only give delicious strawberries, but also decorate the fence.

Multi-tiered

In this case, boxes of different lengths, but of the same width, are again used. The longest will be the base, then a smaller box is installed, and so on. The result is a ladder. The beds are also filled with a nutrient mixture, you can use agrofibre for shelter.

German technology

Such a bed is very similar to the usual one. But at the same time, there are no furrows between the beds, and the beds themselves have fences made of brick, boards, slate or concrete. The width of such beds reaches 60-80 cm, and the height is within 40 cm. The beds also look very neat. A layer of mulch or agrofibre can be placed on top to optimize strawberry care.

Between the beds, beautiful paths are arranged, laying them out with tiles, stones, bricks, pouring concrete. Any option will do, the main thing is that it looks aesthetically pleasing.

Finnish technology

Finnish technology is high beds, which are equipped with drip irrigation, and must be covered with agrofibre. Holes are made in it, and strawberry bushes are planted. High beds can be made from any material available in the country. It can be boards, bricks, slate, stones.

Other options

But the fantasy of gardeners does not end there either. Strawberries are planted in barrels, in old household items, beds are made in the form of pockets, a strawberry plantation can look like a flower bed.

Strawberries are even planted in ordinary plastic bottles. They are placed on a wooden rack, hung on a fence, and installed vertically. For this, a two-liter bottle is taken, holes are made at the bottom to drain water. The upper part is cut off, the bottle is filled with soil, a bush is planted there. You don't have to cut off the top, then you can hang the bottle from the neck to any structure. But then you need to make a window in the middle of the bottle through which you can lay the soil, a berry will grow from it.

A bag is also a good option if there is not much space on the site. For this, at least along the entire perimeter, at least along the house, at least at the fence, bags of soil are placed, garden strawberries are planted there. You can make slits in any part of the bag and place the sprouts there. They will hang down as they grow. A strawberry bag like this looks pretty attractive. The berry is protected from pests, moisture is well preserved.

Specific examples will eloquently tell what the beds can be.

  1. The compact pyramid builds quickly and always looks neat.

  2. These racks save space and allow you to conveniently care for plants.

  3. Plastic pipes with strawberries resemble a birch grove.

  4. Berry pockets will decorate any vertical surface.

  5. And in an ordinary bag, you can grow garden strawberries, just pour nutritious soil there.

  6. Pipes with strawberries can be placed not only vertically, but also horizontally, and they can be painted in any color.

  7. Attractive strawberry beds can be placed throughout the property. They look compact, beautiful and yield a harvest. If the area around is refined with pebble-like coating, the site looks well-groomed and attractive.

How to prepare before planting?

Basically, strawberries are planted in the ground in the fall, in too cold regions, preparation begins in August, so that before the cold weather the seedlings have time to root well and winter safely. Some plant strawberries in the spring, but this is not the best option for those who want to wait for the harvest.

Preparation will depend on which landing method is chosen. If the pyramids, high beds and vertical, then you need to prepare the material itself, from which it was decided to make structures - boards, stones, tires, bricks, pipes.

Next, the beds will have to be filled with nutritious soil, while not forgetting to lay all the layers in the desired sequence, providing for drainage. The land needs to be fertilized, dug up, watered well. Then stretch the covering material, prepare the slots and pits. After that, you can already proceed directly to planting strawberries in the prepared beds.

If you still decide to land in the spring, you should proceed as follows:

  • you need to find a suitable place on your site and mark where future beds will be located;

  • the ground should be prepared in the fall by digging it to the depth of the shovel bayonet;

  • 50 grams of nitrogen fertilizers, 7 kg of compost or humus, 100 g of superphosphate and 50 grams of potassium are added to the ground at the rate of one square meter;

  • the beds are covered with agrofibre, or a layer of straw is placed on top.

How can you cover the beds?

Agrofibre is increasingly used to cover the beds - this is the simplest and most reliable option. One has only to take into account that it can be of different densities, as well as white and black. The white version transmits the sun's rays better, the soil heats up faster. Most often, weeds germinate through it, and you still have to fight them.

The dense black material retains moisture in the soil, prevents the growth of weeds, and limits the access of pests to the soil. In addition, the dense material is able to protect plantings in cold weather.

The area with such a coating looks neat, the ripe strawberries remain clean, they do not come into contact with the ground and does not deteriorate.

But agrofibre is not the only coating for any strawberry garden. There are other means, more familiar, but at the same time looking quite presentable.

You can cover the beds with dry straw. It also retains moisture, slows down the growth of weeds, the berry, ripening, turns out to be on a clean and dry surface, and not on the ground. This is especially convenient when there are heavy rains. If the surface is not covered with anything, strawberries end up on wet ground, if they are not removed in time, they can simply rot or become prey to numerous pests, for example, ants or snails.

Sawdust is also suitable for creating the top layer. All the same benefits as straw. Only the layer should be dense enough, and over time, the sawdust will need to be added.

In general, the beds with both straw and sawdust look very neat.
