The garden strawberry with the sophisticated name Ruyana was bred by specialists from the Czech Republic. Berries are recommended to be eaten fresh, enjoying excellent taste. In the climatic conditions of Russia, this type of strawberry has taken root without problems.
Description of the variety
The plants are between 15 and 20 centimeters tall, with a similar width. Due to their compact shape, the bushes can be grown in small areas. The expressive and neat crown in the shape of a ball gives the Ruyan variety high decorative qualities. Leaves are bright green, tightly curled.
Long and strong stalks rise above the green mass. Ripe berries rise above the bush without touching the ground. This way the fruits remain whole and healthy.
In the process of growth, Czech strawberries do not throw out a mustache, giving all their strength and useful microelements to the berries.
Ripening terms
Breeders have bred a remontant variety that delights with the harvest several times a season. Strawberries begin to bear fruit almost from the beginning of spring until the first frost.
Yield
With stable plantation care, even a novice gardener will be able to harvest up to 2.5 kilograms of crops from one square meter of land. Productivity and transportability are high. If the conditions in the region are comfortable, new berries are harvested every 2-3 days. It is recommended to work early in the morning, after dew has melted.
Ripe berries can be frozen and stored for a long time without losing their appearance and taste. The variety bears fruit regularly for four years, after which the plantation should be renewed.
Berries and their taste
Small berries gain only 7 grams in weight. Length - from 1.5 to 2 centimeters. Most of the fruits are even, conical, but there are also curved specimens. Ripe strawberries turn bright scarlet with pink juicy pulp. The surface of the fruit is medium-lustrous, covered with small stones that are not pressed into the flesh.
The taste is pleasant, sweet. It is complemented by the expressive aroma of wild strawberries.
Growing features
Ruyana is a versatile variety that is not afraid of frost or drought. When propagated by seeds, they are planted between February and March. If the gardener uses ready-made seedlings, planting can be carried out in mid-autumn. Rapid survival allows the plant to easily adapt to a new place before the arrival of frost.
Strawberries are advised to be planted in rows, leaving a gap of 30-35 centimeters between them, the distance between the bushes is 20-25 centimeters. To save space on the site, the Ruyan variety can be planted along the garden path. Due to the lack of whiskers, the plants do not litter the territory.
Drought tolerance prevents the bushes from dying, however, too dry and hot weather has a bad effect on the quality of the crop. In this weather, garden strawberries are irrigated 2-3 times a week. The watering season falls at the beginning of the fruit set. Settled and warm water is introduced under the root so that it does not fall on flowers and foliage. The work is carried out in the early morning or evening, after sunset.
Weed plants grow rapidly and take precious moisture from the fruit crop. Weeds must be removed immediately before they fill the plantation. The ground around the bushes is loosened 1-2 times a month and covered with a layer of mulch.It not only maintains the required moisture level, but also prevents the growth of weeds. Black agrofibre, on which bushes are grown, has become widespread.
Due to the fact that the Ruyan variety does not form a mustache, the process of caring for them is facilitated. No need to waste time removing side shoots.
Site selection and soil preparation
Garden strawberries feel great in sunny areas. If there is a slight blackout, this will not be a problem. The territory chosen for planting seedlings is carefully dug up and fertilized. A bucket of organic fertilizer is consumed per square meter.
The Czech variety does not take root well on clay soil, prefers loose soil. For this, sand is added to the soil. If the acidity is increased, it must be neutralized. Dolomite flour, ash or ordinary lime demonstrates high efficiency. 0.5 kilograms of the substance are used per square meter of plantings.
Pollination
Horticultural culture is bee-pollinated, it needs cross-pollination. The first buds bloom in spring, and flowering lasts until late autumn.
Top dressing
Strawberries quickly deplete the soil, taking away nutrients from it. In the year of planting, feeding is not necessary, and starting from the next season, you need to regularly feed the plantation.
Optimal fertilization pattern.
- Ammonium nitrate is used in early March. This component is needed for the formation of buds. To prepare the drug, 40 grams of the product is diluted in a bucket of water.
- A tablespoon of nitroammophoska is diluted in a bucket of water and brought under the roots at the beginning of flowering.
- A composition of nitroammophoska and potassium sulfate (proportions - a tablespoon per bucket of water) is used in the process of berry ovary.
One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
High frost resistance allows the bushes to survive the cold in regions with mild and short winters without the need for shelter. However, in areas with severe weather conditions, it is advisable to protect the plantation. After harvesting the last wave of the harvest, all flower stalks are cut off. Also remove old leaves and affected shoots. For disinfection, rows of bushes are treated with copper sulfate.
Young seedlings planted in autumn are covered with straw, coniferous branches or spunbond. The variety is able to withstand frosts up to 30 degrees Celsius.
Diseases and pests
Ruyana is not afraid of powdery mildew and other common diseases. The innate immunity also protects strawberries from dangerous insects. If the berries have attracted the attention of weevils or strawberry mites, the bushes are treated with a decoction of wormwood or mustard powder (200 grams of raw materials are dissolved in 10 liters of water).
Gray rot develops rapidly in warm and damp weather. It is best protected from it by wood ash, which is sprinkled on the ground around the plants.
Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.
Reproduction
Due to the fact that Czech garden strawberries do not form a mustache, this variety is propagated by seed or division. The first option is used most often. The seed has a high germination rate. Sowing is carried out from February to May.
Many gardeners choose the method of sowing seedlings using peat tablets. You can buy them at any gardening store.
The work is carried out according to the following scheme:
- peat tablets are poured with water and left for two days to swell;
- then they are placed in a container and one seed is dipped into each tablet;
- the container with the seed is covered with glass or dense cellophane and transferred to the windowsill;
- periodically you need to spray the tablets from a spray bottle so that they do not dry out;
- as soon as the first shoots were noticed, the glass or film is removed;
- seedlings are planted in a new place immediately after the formation of strong roots;
- if the weather outside is not warm enough, the seedlings are grown in a greenhouse.
