The Lambada variety is distinguished by winter hardiness and original taste. It is these qualities that attract the attention of many gardeners involved in the cultivation of this berry crop. Lambada strawberries are grown everywhere and can withstand significant low temperatures. They love berries for their sweet, original taste, and a sufficient amount of sugar.
Breeding history of the variety
The Lambada strawberry is a variety developed by Dutch breeders in 1982. The procedure was done in stages. First, Sylvette and Holiday were crossed with each other, then Karina and Primella. The Lambada cultivar was obtained after combining the results of these two vaccinations.
In 1983, the berry crop was introduced to the international market. At first, local gardeners became interested in strawberries. Within a few years, it spread across the European continent, thus ending up in our country.
The Lambada variety is appreciated by gardeners for its high yield, ability to withstand low temperatures, and resistance to diseases.
Description of the variety
The appearance of the bushes is attractive. Bushes are tall, slightly spreading, have large dark emerald leaves. Peduncles rise above the deciduous part. The cultivar multiplies rapidly, producing many mustaches. A large number of flowers bloom on the shoots, which are large in size, snow-white in color, and a bright yellow core.
Strawberry Lambada has many positive aspects:
withstands low temperature conditions without shelter;
long-term fruiting;
gives a large yield, even if the plantings are thickened, as well as with minimal maintenance;
resistant to diseases and the negative effects of insect pests;
original taste of berries;
you can use the berries in a variety of ways.
With many advantages, there are some disadvantages of the variety. Berries cannot be stored for a long time. In addition, the fruit is difficult to transport.
Ripening terms
The growing season is about a month. This allows us to classify Lambada strawberries as early ripening varieties. You can taste the berries already in late May - early June. The variety does not belong to remontant, but in good conditions it is possible to get another harvest in early September.
Growing regions
Lambada strawberries are grown everywhere. The exceptions are the regions of the Far North.
In the south and central part of the Russian Federation, strawberries do not need to be covered when grown outdoors. Shelter is only necessary if frosts are set below –40 degrees. And this is a rare occurrence in these regions.
In more northern regions, in the Urals and Siberia, berry crops are grown in greenhouse conditions.
Yield
A large number of ovaries are formed on each bush of the plant. With proper care, each seedling can produce up to 0.7-0.9 kg of delicious and sweet berries. Sometimes the harvest can be large. This happens in the southern regions, where high temperatures are already established in May.
Strawberry bushes give a high yield in the second year. This situation continues for 4-5 years. Then it is necessary to renew the plants, since it is difficult to get even a small amount of fruit on old seedlings.
Berries and their taste
Lambada fruits have the usual rounded-conical shape, are characterized by uniformity.Each berry weighs about 20 grams. Ripeness is evidenced by the acquisition of a rich red color.
The pulp has no voids, it has medium density, pleasant taste and strawberry aroma. The fruits are sweet, the acid content is low.
The difference in the variety is that the sepals are raised up. This prevents the berries from sinking to the sand. They are in a raised position.
Growing features
Strawberry bushes of the Lambada variety are planted in three ways. The most common is the mustache method. They appear in large numbers in the culture.
Propagated by strawberries after harvest. Outlets close to the mother bush are selected. Often the very first ones are chosen, while removing the rest.
When planting young plants, do not deepen them excessively. Leave the seedlings 3 to 5 cm above the topsoil.
Strawberry Lambada does not grow to the sides. For this reason, it is necessary to leave a 40 cm distance between the bushes when planting. Also, pay attention to the row spacing. She should be comfortable. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to care for the berry crop.
Site selection and soil preparation
Although Lambada strawberries are unpretentious, you should pay attention to the choice of planting site. Professional gardeners recommend avoiding shaded areas. The Lambada variety grows better in areas that are well lit by the sun and have protection from the wind.
A good harvest is obtained if loamy soils are selected for the crop, characterized by a neutral or slightly acidic composition. If desired, you can grow Lambada strawberries on any soil. This is ensured if nutrients are added. Good growth is observed when choosing light, breathable soils.
It should be borne in mind that on lands with a significant percentage of salt in the composition, there is a slowdown in plant growth.
Pollination
Lambada strawberries begin to bloom in the first weeks of May, if the weather is warm. The last time you can observe fruiting is in September, when the first frosts on the soil begin.
You do not need to pollinate the additional variety. On one bush there are more than a dozen bisexual inflorescences.
One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.
Diseases and pests
Strawberry Lambada has a fairly high immunity. Seedlings are not exposed to the negative effects of gray rot, brown spot, verticillary wilting. The variety also withstands powdery mildew. For this reason, it is necessary to process the bushes in the spring and autumn with a solution of copper sulfate or Bordeaux liquid.
To cope with slugs, you should first scatter tobacco dust between the rows.
Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.
Reproduction
You can propagate Lambada strawberries in different ways. The variety is especially often propagated with the help of a mustache. And there is also an option by dividing with a knife or pruner. In this case, you can get from one bush from 3 to 4 seedlings. Finally, you can get strawberries from seeds. All these methods are known, their technology is no different from the propagation of other varieties.
The Lambada strawberry is quite unpretentious. She only needs watering, weed removal, constant loosening of row spacings. With care, the yield is significant.
