Crapo 10 strawberries, also known as Crapo 10, are among the rare ampel varieties for Russia, suitable for growing in pots or pots. Despite the fact that it appeared on the market relatively recently, gardeners have already managed to appreciate both the excellent taste properties and the versatility of the variety.
Breeding history of the variety
Crapo 10 strawberry was bred in Italy in 2018 by COVIRO. Tested in Eastern Europe. It was brought to Russia in 2019.
Description of the variety
Strawberry Krapo 10 forms a powerful semi-spreading shrub. On strong shoots, dark green leaves are formed, framed with beautiful teeth - very decorative. The variety belongs to the group of plants with neutral daylight hours. Whiskers are formed abundantly, berries can also ripen on unrooted rosettes. The variety forms tall, strong peduncles, slightly drooping under the weight of the berries.
Fruit clusters are distinguished by a branched structure. Up to 15 ovaries are formed on each. Differs in the ability to bear fruit on the layers while they are on the mustache.
Ripening terms
The variety is remontant, characterized by long-term fruiting. It starts in June and lasts until October.
Growing regions
The variety is suitable for planting in all regions of the Russian Federation. It is possible to grow in greenhouse conditions, on terraces, in winter gardens, on alpine slides. It is considered promising for planting in the southern regions.
Yield
Krapo 10 gives up to 2.5 kg of berries from a bush. When grown indoors, you can achieve maximum yields. In unfavorable conditions, it decreases to 1 kg per bush.
Berries and their taste
The berries are transportable and have an attractive presentation. The tasting score is above average, reaching 4.4 points. The berries are characterized by a bright red skin color, dense flesh without voids, pronounced sweetness of taste with barely noticeable sourness. The size of the fruits is large, the weight varies in the range of 30-50 g, some crushing is observed by the end of the season. The shape is correct, oval or slightly trapezoidal.
Growing features
In one place, the bushes can be kept for no more than 4 years. The recommended planting distance is 35x40 cm. When transferring to the ground, it is important to ensure that the root system of the bush is directed downward. After planting, young plants need regular daily watering for the first 14 days.
Site selection and soil preparation
When choosing a location, it is recommended to give preference to plots of land well sheltered from the wind, sunny, with the location of groundwater no closer than 70 cm from the surface. The soil is well prepared in advance. It is important that the acidity indicators are close to neutral - 5.2-5.5 pH, and the soil itself is light and fertile.
In case of excessive acidification during digging, it is necessary to add wood ash, lime, dolomite flour to the ground. At the same time, fertilizers are laid - 25 g of double superphosphate and 2.5 g of potash mixtures per 1 m2 of garden area are enough. After that, the site is left for 3-4 weeks.
Pollination
The variety does not require pollination assistance. Peduncles on the bushes are formed according to the male and female types.
Top dressing
Krapo 10 requires particularly careful maintenance during flowering and fruiting. The duration of this process implies the application of fertilizers at two-week intervals. The best choice will be the Gaspadar and Gumi-Omi complexes. Nitrogen fertilizing should be carried out no more than 2 times during the season, at a concentration not higher than 1: 10 for cow manure, 1: 25 for poultry manure. The liquid solution is applied in an amount of not more than 0.5 liters per 1 bush by the root method.
One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
Krapo 10 belongs to varieties with high winter hardiness. Easily adapts to growing conditions. Despite this, in regions with average winter temperatures below -10 degrees, it is necessary to provide the bushes with a reliable shelter or grow them as a pot culture. Plants are transferred to the room with the onset of cold weather. The air temperature for cessation of fruiting should be maintained at +2 degrees and below.
Diseases and pests
When breeding the Krapo 10 variety, breeders took into account many disadvantages, initially providing it with resistance to most common diseases. Low resistance is observed only in relation to powdery mildew. As a preventive measure, it is worth considering the early spring treatment of the beds with Horus or its analogues. During periods of heavy rainfall, it is recommended to spray the bushes with a weak solution of manganese.
To reduce the risk of infection by insect pests, it is necessary to place beds with Krapo 10 strawberries away from the places where bushes of raspberries, currants and other berry crops grow.
Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.
Reproduction
The main methods for obtaining new plants are generative and vegetative. Usually, those layers that give adult shoots are enough. Also, if necessary, you can collect and sow seeds. This is done from February to March, the seedlings are transferred to a permanent place from July to September or in April-May.
Many gardeners choose not to trim the mustache from mother plants during the season. In this case, even on not fully rooted rosettes, peduncles are formed, increasing the likelihood of an increase in crop volumes. This does not affect the condition of the mother bush.
When multiplying by division, the bush is cut into several parts. These events are held in spring or autumn. When dividing, a well-developed root system is left on each bush. Before planting, the hole is watered abundantly.
Review overview
According to summer residents, who have already appreciated the Italian breeding novelty in action, Krapo 10 is one of the most promising new varieties of strawberries. Its characteristic decorative effect, combined with an intense ejection of flower stalks, ensures a bountiful harvest even with container planting. In almost any conditions, the variety takes root successfully, looks beautiful in the composition of rock gardens. There is also an expressive "strawberry" taste - exactly what it should be in a berry, suitable for dessert use, cooking jam and compotes.
Problems in growing a new variety have also been noticed. For example, sweet berries are highly attractive to ants. Fighting them takes a lot of time and effort. Disease damage, judging by the reviews, was not noted.
