When setting up a plantation, gardeners choose plant varieties that are easy to care for, and the return will be maximum. These are the characteristics that the Clery strawberry variety, bred by Italian breeders, possesses.
Description of the variety
The leaves of this variety are large, painted in a rich, dark green color. The surface is shiny, glossy. In the process of growth, the bushes take on the shape of a ball. The sizes are compact, the height is high. Medium-leafed Cleary strawberry bushes have high aesthetic qualities, ranging from the color and shape of the foliage to the snow-white buds and bright berries.
Garden strawberries form a large number of whiskers. The inflorescences grow at the same level as the green mass. Experienced gardeners note that the variety has no problems with setting. Clery can be grown in an apartment, on a balcony or loggia. Also, strawberries will be a great addition to the winter garden.
The first flowers begin to appear in May, and a month later the first crop is being harvested.
Ripening terms
This fruit crop has an early ripening period. The peak of fruiting falls in June. There is no renovation.
Yield
With proper care, from 1 to 2 kilograms of fruits are harvested from one bush. With commercial cultivation, up to 290 centners per hectare are obtained. These indicators indicate a high yield of the variety. Ripe berries tolerate transportation without any problems, while maintaining an attractive appearance and taste. In a refrigerator or cold room, fruits are stored for 5 to 6 days.
Berries and their taste
Ripe fruits turn dark red. When large, the berries weigh from 25 to 45 grams. The shape is correct, conical. There are no voids inside the strawberry. The pulp is firm and juicy. Throughout the entire fruiting period, the crop retains its shape and size.
Professional tasters describe the taste of the berries as sweet, with a pleasant sourness.
Growing features
The Italian variety Clery tolerates drought without any problems, but only short-term. Lack of moisture negatively affects the quality of the crop and the well-being of the plant. The bushes have good adaptability. Due to the fact that the mustache is formed in large numbers, it must be removed periodically. Only the antennae necessary for reproduction are left.
It is necessary to plant garden strawberries in early spring. The work is carried out after the snow has melted, so that the plant gains strength and gets stronger before flowering. The bushes can be grown in greenhouses and greenhouses.
A gap of 35-40 centimeters is left between the holes, and between the rows - from 50 to 60 centimeters. Plantations should be renewed every 4 years to maintain high yields.
Some summer residents land at the end of July or in August. So the seedlings will take root in a new place before the onset of cold weather.
It is recommended to feed the land. A glass of ash and a bucket of manure are used per square meter of the plantation. In addition to ash, potassium sulfate (120 grams per square meter) or superphosphate (100 grams per square meter) can also be used.
When planting, the growth point is left just below the ground. 7-10 days after planting, the strawberries are watered every day. After watering, it is carried out every 2 weeks in warm weather.
When setting up a plantation in early March, it is advisable to cover the plants with dense polyethylene so that they do not suffer in case of unexpected frosts.
Another condition that must be met when growing garden strawberries is loosening the upper layers of the soil. If the roots don't get enough oxygen, they will start to rot. Loosening also helps to get rid of weeds and larvae of harmful insects. This procedure has a positive effect on the yield and development of the bushes.
To maintain an optimal moisture level, as well as to reduce the frequency of irrigation, the ground is covered with mulch. To do this, use black non-woven material, sawdust, straw or leaf litter. Organic mulch decomposes over time and binds nitrogen from the soil, therefore it is necessary to fertilize the soil with fertilizing with a high content of this component.
Site selection and soil preparation
Clery's garden strawberry prefers a loamy soil with a neutral acidity index. In the presence of groundwater, they must lie deep underground. The area chosen for growing strawberries should be located away from tall plants and buildings. Also, the fruit crop loves sunlight.
The location should be prepared in advance, before planting seedlings. The earth is dug up, cleared of debris and weeds. The soil should be light and airy for proper air circulation.
Pollination
The flowers of the Clery variety are bisexual, due to which the plant can be pollinated on its own, without using other plants. The buds are large, snow-white, rich in pollen.
Top dressing
After the end of the winter cold and removing the shelter, the strawberries must be fed. To form a lush green mass, nitrogen fertilizers are used.
You can prepare the composition yourself by mixing the following components.
- rotted manure (a bucket of manure is used per meter of plantation);
- chicken droppings (1x10);
- mullein solution (1x10).
In order for the bush to be covered with large and lush flowers, use the following composition: add 40 grams of nitrophoska and 5 grams of potassium sulfate to half a liter of water.
It is also desirable to maintain a fruit crop during flowering. Experienced gardeners recommend using herbal infusion. Before making it, it is diluted in a 1x3 ratio. The last time fertilizers are introduced at the end of summer. The bushes are fed with 40-50 grams of complex fertilizers, which are diluted in a liter of water. A glass of ash is added to the resulting composition.
One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
If the region has warm and short winters, plantations do not need to be covered, but in other regions of the country this procedure is mandatory. Hay, pine needles and straw are most often used as shelter. Also, before the arrival of frost, a number of preparatory procedures are performed. The site is cleaned of grass, whiskers and old leaves are removed. And with the arrival of heat, the shelter is immediately removed so that the plants warm up in the spring sun.
Diseases and pests
Clery has an increased resistance to root diseases, medium - to white and brown spot.
The plantation is treated with Bordeaux liquid (1-2%). The substance will protect strawberries from anthracnose. The procedure is carried out before flowering. If signs of illness have already appeared on the bush, use "Ridomil" or "Antrakol".
Among folk remedies, garlic infusion is chosen (for 10 liters of water, 200 ml of garlic juice).
Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.
Reproduction
You can increase the plantation in the following ways.
- A simple and effective method is whisker reproduction. The rosettes are planted in peat pots without separating them from the mother plant. A transplant to a permanent place is performed immediately, as a seedling has 5-6 leaves.
- The second option is division. Choose only two or three year old shrubs.
It is not advised to propagate strawberries by seeds, since this is a long and time-consuming process.
