To develop the Dutch variety Eliane, specialists crossed two species: Vissers and Konings. The fruits have received universal application. They can be enjoyed fresh during fruiting, and can also be used as a main or additional ingredient in dishes.
Description of the variety
The bushes of this species turned out to be tall and powerful, reaching a maximum of 30 centimeters in height. They grow very quickly, especially in comfortable conditions. The leaves are colored light green and covered with a glossy film. From hot air and high temperatures, they roll up into tubes, but this is not reflected in the quality of the crop.
Mustache is formed in moderation. Peduncles are located at the same level with the green mass. They are strong enough to hold the berries, however, as they ripen, they begin to tilt towards the ground.
Ripening terms
Eliane's strawberry pleases with the harvest only once a season (there is no remontability). Fruits ripen early - from the last decade of May to the end of June. In the southern regions, the first berries turn red even earlier.
Yield
Gardeners were attracted by the high yield of this variety. Up to 2 kilograms of fruit can be obtained from one bush. Ripe strawberries can be stored and not spoiled in transit, which is why they are often grown commercially. The harvested crop is stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. The berries remain tasty and retain their shape.
Berries and their taste
Brilliant garden strawberries can be conical or round in shape. The color of ripe fruits is light red. Their size is a rather controversial issue, since the weight of the berry varies from 20 to 90 grams. The size is strongly influenced by weather conditions and adherence to agricultural practices. At the same time, experts characterize the fruits as large. Juicy, elastic and sweet pulp is hidden inside. It is due to the density that strawberries are transported over a long distance without losing the quality of the crop.
Many gardeners note Eliane's excellent taste. The fruit is sweet and aromatic, with a pleasant sour aftertaste. The scent contains strawberry and floral notes.
Growing features
Self-fertile horticultural crops are capable of producing a stable harvest in almost any weather conditions, the main thing is to properly care for the plantation. Strawberries can be planted almost all year round. Planting occurs in early spring, late summer, or throughout September. When choosing a suitable period, the climatic zone is taken into account.
On one site, bushes can be grown for 10 years, without wasting time and effort on frequent plantation renewal. In order for the seedlings to fully develop, with a line planting, 80 centimeters of space are left between the rows, and 40 centimeters between the plants. Garden strawberry loves sandy loam and loamy soils, light or medium in texture. The acidity level is 5-6.5 pH.
Most summer residents advise planting seedlings in the fall, especially if the plantation is located in the southern region. In these regions, summers are very hot, and young plants will not have time to adapt. Extreme conditions weaken the immune system, and strawberries become sick. The variety will grow and bear fruit remarkably on the ground where dill, garlic and cereals used to grow.
Young strawberry bushes are watered with warm and settled water. If cold liquid is used, development may be slowed down. If you plan to propagate your garden crop yourself, opt for a strip scheme, leaving up to one meter of space between the strips. This will be enough to sprout strawberries with a mustache.
In a hot season, the plantation is watered every 5-7 days. Sprinkling is often used in the spring during the growing season. With frequent precipitation, additional irrigation is not carried out. Any fruit crop loves moisture, but its excessive amount is destructive.
The ground around the bushes should always be loose, for this it is regularly dug up. Weeds often cause the spread of diseases and interfere with airing, so they must be removed immediately. To keep the soil loose and moist longer, it is covered with mulch from straw or sawdust. At the end of the season, organic mulch is dug up, turning it into a nutritious top dressing.
In order for the berries to be as large as possible, the bushes must be cleaned of mustaches. The lateral processes take a lot of energy from the bushes. It is impossible to pull out the mustache, they are carefully cut off, leaving only a small shoot 3-4 centimeters long. In rainy weather, removal is not performed.
Site selection and soil preparation
A hybrid fruit crop easily takes root in spacious and sunny areas. The area chosen for planting must be protected from cold northerly winds and drafts. A rich harvest can only be achieved on fertile land. Forest black soil, sandy loam or loamy soil are also great. River sand and compost are mixed into heavy soil - this will increase fruiting.
The site must be prepared in advance. Cleaning and deep digging are carried out. The land is fed with organic and other compounds. A bucket of rotted manure is enough for a square meter of land. 45 grams of potash fertilizers and 120 grams of superphosphate are added to it.
Pollination
The Dutch strawberry is self-pollinating and does not need pollinating plants.
Top dressing
Fertilize garden strawberries three times per season.
The first portion of nutrients arrives in the spring. In the process of forming a bush, nitrogen fertilizers are chosen so that the green mass is thick and voluminous.
The second time the fertilizer is introduced during the fruit set.
In order for the plant to survive the winter, it is fed after harvest.
Complex dressings, which include a large set of micronutrients, are highly effective. Strawberries respond well to organic fertilizers such as compost or manure.
One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
Garden strawberries are considered winter-hardy, and in areas with mild and snowy winters, they will overwinter without the obligatory shelter. In other areas, the plantation is covered with a thick layer of compost or straw mulch. And also in the sections, arcs are installed on which the spunbond is pulled.
Diseases and pests
Gardeners who have been growing Eliana's strawberries for several years note that it is practically not affected by the strawberry mite. And also she is not afraid of powdery mildew and gray rot. However, preventive measures will not be superfluous. For protection, special chemicals are used, used according to the instructions on the package. It is impossible to process them during the fruiting period, since the berries absorb hazardous components in the composition.
Folk remedies can be used at any time. The bushes are sprayed with an infusion of onion peel or garlic.
Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.
Reproduction
With the help of a mustache, you can quickly and easily propagate a hybrid variety. Only the strongest and strongest bushes, which are distinguished by high yields, are chosen as mother plants. When rooting, the two nearest sockets are selected, the rest are removed.
