Strawberries are considered the queen of berries. But as we love to eat her, so she loves various feeding. If you systematically apply fertilizers on strawberry beds, you can achieve an increase in yield by a third, and the berries themselves will be even juicier and larger in size.

Experts remind of the importance and usefulness of fertilizing during the planting period. In the article, we will tell you about what to add to the soil during spring and autumn planting of strawberries, so as not only to get lush and beautiful bushes, but also an excellent harvest.

Why fertilize the soil?

Certain varieties of garden strawberries can adapt and grow on almost any soil, but strawberries love a more nutritious environment. For to get quality berries, the soil must be fertilized before planting strawberry bushes.

The beds are prepared in advance, and first of all they are dug up with a garden shovel (at least three weeks before planting).

For good growth, strawberries need both organic and mineral compounds. There are no problems with the first ones - this is what is at hand:

  • humus;

  • peat;

  • compost (manure is also suitable).

And from mineral fertilizers it is better to use complex formulations, they come with all the necessary useful microelements. This berry culture does not like strong moisture, so for planting it is better to make high beds and provide a drainage layer.

If, when creating a hill in the beds, you mix soil with manure or humus and add wood ash, then the plants will receive good organic and mineral feeding, and so that water does not stagnate, a layer of sand is needed below.

Strawberry bushes are planted at a distance of about half a meter from each other, almost the same amount (40 cm) is left between the beds.

As for fertilization and feeding of young outlets during planting, it also depends on what time of the year this event is carried out.

Let us consider in detail what is brought into the holes in the spring, when they want to breed a new plantation of this berry, and what they feed the young bushes with when planting in the fall.

What to add in the spring?

Before spring planting, rotted manure is introduced into the soil, or chicken droppings can be added to each hole. But these organic compounds should not be fresh to avoid burns.

The main principle of work during the spring planting of strawberries is not to overdo it with organic matter. Otherwise, the plant will certainly grow lush and green, but it will produce few berries. As our grandfathers said: "everything went into the bush."

If, nevertheless, you come across this, then next spring simply refuse to apply organic fertilizers in this place.

And you can put peat in the hole when planting strawberries: fill the depression with a peat composition by a quarter, water it, and plant a rosette with leaves.

But knowledgeable gardeners note that if you properly prepare the soil in advance, then you do not need to add anything to the holes. For spring planting, prepare the soil in the summer.

  1. A site is selected and legumes or mustard are planted on it. Lupine or other plants from the green manure category are also suitable.

  2. As soon as you harvest (if these are legumes), or the plants have faded, pick off the remains and bury them in the same place.

  3. In the fall, fertilize the soil with superphosphate, scatter potassium salt, and scatter humus.

And in the spring, when planting, it remains only to water the bushes well, and not to fertilize anything else - the soil is already saturated with the necessary elements. This is quite enough for the plants to gain a foothold and grow.Remember that too much feeding is not good for the crop.

What to bring to the ground in autumn?

When planting strawberries, be sure to fertilize the beds. At this time, the soil needs mainly organic fertilizers. To do this, you can feed it with compost, add humus or peat. Strawberries themselves love ash, so you can put a handful of ash in each hole.

Wood ash is suitable, it perfectly replaces phosphorus-potassium fertilizer.

Experienced gardeners have developed this technique for planting strawberries in the fall.

  1. They collect humus in one bucket (or another vessel), and ash in the other.

  2. For watering, they prepared a special watering can or a bucket of water, as well as a jar or mug.

  3. All buckets are placed in the aisle and planting begins.

  4. They make holes with a shovel and pour the ash composition and humus there.

  5. In the hole, organic fertilizers are mixed with the ground.

  6. Add 2-3 cups of water to the well.

  7. Plants are planted when water is slightly absorbed into the soil.

Strawberries and garden strawberries need feeding when planting for better plant rooting and development.

But if the land was also prepared in advance for the autumn planting (as described above for the spring planting), then you can also limit yourself to only minimal feeding: add only 1 tsp to the hole. special composition for growing strawberries.

And do not forget to promptly pluck or cut off new rosettes and antennae from young plants, then all forces will go to the formation of berries.
