What mites can appear on the site and how to deal with them?
Millions of city dwellers, with the onset of warmth, rush to their summer cottages. But there hungry ticks can "wait" for them and their pets - these insect pests after hibernation are most dangerous both for humans and animals, and for cultivated plantations.
In the article, we will tell you what ticks can appear at the summer cottage and how to deal with them in order to secure your stay in your favorite place, as well as save the harvest.
Signs of the appearance of insects
Ticks in a summer cottage or personal plot can live quietly from the period when the snow melted until the onset of cool evenings. They hide not only in tall thickets of grass, pests can also settle in small bushes.
They are practically invisible, and it is not easy to understand whether there are ticks or not. Experienced summer residents, in order to make sure that this parasite has wound up, are preparing to check for insects in a special way. To do this, make a bait in the form of a white "flag".
The design itself is made like a real flag, only the canvas is taken in white. It is advisable to use waffle or flannel fabric - these structures absorb better, and before searching for them, it is better to process them with human or animal sweat for bait.
With a white "flag" inspect the entire site, passing them over the surface of the vegetation several times. The walker slowly pulls an even canvas behind him, does not allow it to curl. Every 50 steps, it is advisable to check the "flag" and clean it of plant elements or the mites themselves.
After carrying out this diagnosis, you will understand the whole situation with ticks in a given area and take precautions and control. You need to know that the favorite habitats of ticks are heaps of last year's foliage and branches.
First of all, explore these places and put things in order. Mow the grass that appears - bloodsuckers love to "bathe" in young greenery.
Definition of the species
Determination of the species is important first of all in order to choose the right remedy and know how to treat, if suddenly the tick has managed to dig into your body. For this, the creatures collected from the flag are placed in a glass container and taken away to the nearest Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology.
In summer cottages and in garden areas, they often live garden pincers. These include the cobweb - this is a dangerous pest for domestic crops. Spider mite does not harm humans and animals, it affects mainly fruit crops.
It is easy to recognize by the thin web woven by it on plants, on the leaves of which small (up to 2 mm) reddish ticks will sit on the back side.
A frequent guest at the dacha becomes encephalitis (ixodid) tick... This is a rather dangerous creature for humans (it is a carrier of encephalitis), and its subspecies - the brown dog tick - usually "hunts" domestic animals, but also remains dangerous for their owners.
The ixodid tick is noticeable on the body due to its dark color, the period of its activity falls on May-July, but if it is stable in August, then this month you can "get to know" it.
There is another type of tick that is most dangerous to humans - argas mite... At dachas, it is rare, but nevertheless it is better to be on the alert, as they say.The parasite with a gray-yellow color is capable of infecting with coxiellosis, relapsing fever, arbovirus infections.
It is rarely found in summer cottages, mainly in cave areas, in various crevices and cracks.
Processing rules and terms
It is advisable to treat the suburban area from ticks at least 2 times - in the spring, before the start of the season, and again at the discretion of the owners and depending on the activity of the parasites. Even if they are not at your dacha, but you noticed them at the neighbors, you still carry out the processing - so they will no longer want to move to your territory.
There are several rules to follow to make the processing more efficient.
- Start disinfecting the area as soon as the last snow covers have melted. Such an early acaricidal treatment will precede the peak of activity of the bloodsuckers that have awakened after hibernation.
- Process either early in the morning or in the evening - This is the most active time of day for ticks that prefer coolness. At +20 degrees, treatment may be ineffective for the reason that the parasites will practically not move, they will fall asleep, which means that they will not be persecuted.
- Disinsection is carried out only in good cloudless and calm weather. Precipitation or strong gusts of wind are undesirable after processing.
Compliance with these simple rules, as well as the choice of suitable protective equipment, will bring an effective result in the fight against bloodsuckers.
What can be processed?
To kill ticks, it is not necessary to call specialists (unless, of course, you have a horde of them). You can get rid of these pests on your own, even if it is a country house. It is enough to prepare the necessary funds and ingredients in order to make the necessary compositions.
You can also use ready-made means of factory production. Let's take a closer look at each of the methods.
Professional drugs
Chemistry will help to effectively destroy ticks and other bloodsucking. In the top of the best insecticides for disinfection are drugs such as "Karbofos", "Tsifox", "Cypermethrin" and other effective means. They are used strictly according to the instructions.
It is very important to dilute the composition correctly so that it does not lose its effectiveness. At the same time, the person who decides to carry out the treatment will need personal protective equipment to avoid burns and poisoning.
In general, to work with professional tools, it is better to take a special training course or entrust such processing to professionals. You yourself can use also effective drugs, but working with which is not so dangerous.
- "Ram". Contains permethrin - the main active ingredient of the drug. This is a highly concentrated composition that must be diluted with water before processing. 10 liters of liquid requires 25 ml of concentrate. This amount of solution is enough to process 10 acres.
- "Quiet evening"... Produced in the form of smoke bombs. The drug is very simple to use, it is enough to set it on fire to make the “checker” start to smoke. One such construction emits a substance that is toxic to ticks for 2 hours and can "neutralize" an area of 200-250 square meters from bloodsuckers.
- "Medilis-Ziper" - a drug from a series of professional. It is available from special services, but it is also available for free sale. They are processed with it either at the end of the summer cottage season, in the fall, or at the beginning - in the spring. At least 3 days after disinfection, it is desirable that no one be on the site.
For those who do not tolerate chemistry, there are other methods of dealing with ticks.
Folk remedies
Chemical treatment is very effective, but not as safe for both humans and the environment, so many are trying to remove ticks from their sites using folk remedies. Let's consider the most popular recipes.
- Vinegar (preferably apple 6%).The composition is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 4, hypoallergenic liquid soap is added to the solution, brought to the consistency of a gel and the resulting composition is coated with open areas of the body. If you make a more liquid consistency, you can spray the entire territory with the prepared preparation. To enhance efficiency, connoisseurs of summer cottage life add to this composition the Chinese balm "Zvezdochka".
- Tar (tar water). Any tar (pine, birch) is diluted in warm water (0.5 kg and 2 liters, respectively). The mixture is infused for 8-9 hours and applied to the skin. The composition can also be treated by sprinkling it on the ground and on the grass.
- Citrus water. The smell of citrus frightens off bloodsuckers, so collect the peel of oranges and grapefruits in advance: dry or freeze. At the right time, add fresh lemon, pieces of grapefruit and orange to it, fill everything with water so that it only slightly covers the ingredients, and boil. The resulting broth is used to treat any surface, as well as things, body, hair of pets, plants.
- Clove oil. It is used to repel ticks and other pests. 200 ml of water is poured into a spray bottle, 1 tablespoon of clove oil and 95% alcohol are added there. Then you need to shake well and spray the composition on clothes, body and plants.
As you can see, you can fight ticks on your own: folk remedies are used without harm to dogs and other pets. Natural formulations are recommended to spray tomatoes in the greenhouse from spider mites.
And in the garden you can poison with pesticides. Regular use of such pesticides as "Eforia", "Karatoshans" and other safe species for the processing of greens give good results in the fight against ticks. With the annual use of such drugs, bloodsucking leaves their favorite territory.
Eco-friendly control methods
Eco-friendly methods may not be as effective against ticks, but such protection is more humane for the environment. Right at home, you can plant lavender, thyme, mint, and other smelling plants - all of them are kind of traps for ticks.
Planting plants
In addition to the above, parasites are scared away by other plants. So, they avoid the smell of tansy; ticks do not like the aroma of medicinal rosemary, Dalmatian chamomile, and so on. Planting these plants cannot fully guarantee protection from ticks, but in general, if you plant them near the house, remove heaps with last year's leaves in the garden, then you can not be afraid.
Attracting natural enemies
The number of bloodsuckers will help reduce their enemies. So, for starlings and blackbirds, ticks are the most delicious food. Therefore, lure these birds to your site by building more feeders for them. You can also create protection in the form of a safe strip of natural origin.
So, after destroying the grass on the border with your site, fill in a layer of sawdust or gravel instead of greenery. If the width of such a barrier is 1 meter, this barrier will definitely be too tough for the ticks. Experienced gardeners also plant Caucasian or Persian chamomile in such strips.
These plants contain a substance that strongly repels ticks. In this case, they have only one way to get closer to you - with the help of rodents, using them as transport.
Therefore, pay attention to this moment: explore the territory for the activity of mice and similar animals.
Prevention measures
Specialized preparations (by the way, those intended for the destruction of rodents and other harmful insects are also suitable) will help get rid of ticks, but to prevent the parasites from infecting the site again, preventive measures must be taken.
- Mow the grass more often, do not let it grow. A petrol mower is an essential tool in the fight against mites as they love shelter from the sun. The lower the grass is, the less opportunities they have to hide there.
- For the same reason, you should not accumulate garbage heaps, various rubbish and tree branches.... Take everything out and destroy: the cleaner your site is, the more protection you will receive.
- Burn the cut grass immediately, because it may contain pests - surviving individuals.
- If ticks are found, one chemical treatment per season will not be enough to eradicate them.... This procedure is recommended to be done several times a month, you can alternate with processing folk remedies. When tick activity is at its peak, it is best to treat the area weekly.
- Disinfect areas around basements, wells, carefully handle gazebos and other places where people are often.
And most importantly: when processing, take precautions. Hide your hair, put on a special suit that covers all parts of your body. After all the disinfection measures, inspect yourself for the absence of pests on your clothes.
Just as before processing, you checked with a white "flag", and after processing, go through this construction again to assess the situation. Examine yourself, your loved ones and pets regularly after each long walk; if you find a tick on your body, it is better to seek medical help.
