Clematis "Stasik": description of the variety and the rules for its cultivation
Clematis is highly valued by both gardeners and landscape designers. This is a very bright flower, the appearance of which attracts attention throughout the summer. The "Stasik" variety is very popular; it is used both in private plots and for decorating city streets. We will talk about its features, cultivation and care rules in our article.
Peculiarities
This variety was bred by Maria Sharonova in 1972. He received the name in honor of the breeder's grandson.
It belongs to the classic shrub vine and represents the buttercup family. The stems can be up to 4 meters long. With leaf petioles, the plant catches on to the supports, rising up. The height of obstacles can be up to two meters.
According to the description, the variety has thin brown stems, which are very strong. Leaves are predominantly simple, sometimes trifoliate can be found, but this is more an accident than heredity.
Large flowers can reach 12 centimeters in diameter, they look very impressive on thin stems.
Flowers open very wide, and their sepals slightly overlap each other. It looks very beautiful, as it seems that the flowers cover the stems almost completely.
The opened buds have a cherry hue, but over time it brightens, acquiring a red with a purple tint. There are contrasting white stripes on the bottom. Anthers are dark purple in color. Clematis begins to bloom in the first month of summer.
Trimming group
Each of the varieties of this plant has its own pruning group. This is influenced by the nuances of the formation of generative shoot buds. Clematis "Stasik" has a third group. It is made up of late-flowering specimens that branch rather densely. Shoots are cut at approximately 0.2 to 0.5 meters in front of the second or third pair of buds.
Almost all varieties of this plant are subjected to such pruning, which have the ability to bloom in the summer. It is needed so that the growth does not get out of control, but is clearly limited. If the shoots die off, they also need to be removed. And also shoots are cut, which are at a height of up to 10 centimeters from the ground.
Optimal conditions
In order for the plant to grow well and bloom magnificently, it needs to create comfortable living conditions. As for the clematis of this variety, it requires moderate illumination, although it gravitates towards light. but excess sunlight can harm "Stasik"... If the flower grows in northern or temperate latitudes, placement in a sunny area is understandable, but in the south it will need partial shade. However, in any case, open spaces should be avoided.
Clematis do not tolerate drafts well. In winter, especially in open areas, the wind can blow off the snow cover, and this threatens to freeze open generative buds. In turn, this situation leads to a lack of flowering in the coming year.
For this plant, a light soil rich in nutrients is suitable. On clay or loamy soil, it will not be able to fully develop.
It will be useful to monitor the acidity - the best option if it is 6-8 pH.
For clematis "Stasik" lowland is not the best place. He does not like moisture, in addition, the groundwater should also not be too high. Their maximum indicator should be at the level of 1.2 meters. When this condition is not possible, you should think about a drainage system.
The planting of vines occurs depending on the goals. If they have to fit in a large area, it is best to plant them in an even row, about 70 centimeters apart from each other. The location on the support should provide for uniform illumination of each instance. If the plant is to wrap around the wall of a building, it should be at least 60 centimeters from it, and the support can be installed directly on the wall.
However, there are some nuances. Some people own metal fences that get very hot in the sun.
If the plant's task is to decorate such a fence, the support should not be placed too close. Contact with hot metal will cause heat burns to clematis.
This vine is frost-resistant. It copes well with dropping temperatures down to -35 degrees Celsius. However, we must not forget that preparing for winter is a must. A well-prepared plant can do well even in northern latitudes.
In order for the plant to endure the winter well, it will need insulation. You can use humus, sawdust, straw or fallen leaves. The thickness of the shelter should be at least 30 centimeters. It should be removed by the end of February.
How to plant and care?
It is recommended to plant this vine in the spring or autumn.
If the procedure is planned at the turn of March and April, it must be borne in mind that the buds should not have time to bloom. And also this year the plant will be damaged by flowering. To prevent it from happening, the buds that form should simply be cut off.
Autumn planting involves the procedure in late August or early September. You need to plant it before it gets colder outside, so that the plant has time to adapt, and the roots will begin to develop in the spring. Rooting becomes a guarantee that the vine will bloom next year, so planting should not be postponed.
Preparatory work
It is necessary to fertilize the soil in advance in order to fill it with nutrients. This is done 2-3 months before planting. If we are talking about spring planting of flowers, feeding is carried out before the onset of frost. It is best to use humus.
Saplings can be either one-year-old or two-year-old. First you need to choose the right specimens. To do this, it is necessary to pay attention to a number of factors.
There should be more than three roots, and the minimum indicator of their length is 10 centimeters. There should be two or more strong stems, and buds should be located on each of them. If planting occurs in the spring, there should be at least two buds that have not yet blossomed, and at least three developed in the fall.
Before planting, the root system must be dried. After that, the seedling is immersed in warm water for 6-7 hours with the addition of rooting agents, among which you can use, for example, "Epin" or "Kornevin". Growth stimulants will also benefit. For prophylaxis, treatment of the roots with a weak solution of potassium permanganate right before planting is suitable.
Landing
The planting hole should be square with a length of 60 centimeters on each side. At the bottom there is a drainage system up to 15 centimeters high. For it, you can use gravel, pebbles, broken brick. After that, the soil is filled up to the middle.
For loamy soil, the addition of sand and humus will be required. If the soil is sandy loam, you will need to fill up, in addition to humus, also peat and sand. All components must be taken in equal amounts.
In order to produce soil mineralization, it is necessary to fill in 1 liter of wood ash and 100 grams of slaked lime for each planting pit. The procedure is carried out in advance.
The seedling is placed on a mound of soil, then its roots are gently straightened. Height to ground level should be between 5 and 15 centimeters. The hole is covered with soil and compacted a little, and a support is placed in the immediate vicinity.
Immediately after planting, it is required to mulch the soil. You can use straw, sawdust or grass for the procedure. In the case when the soil has a deficiency of nutrients, you can add peat.
Watering and feeding
Water the plant immediately after planting. After that, the procedure is repeated in the evening, approximately once every 3-5 days, on hot days a little more often. The water should flow directly to the root. It is very important not to flood the clematis, the soil should just be well moistened.
Top dressing is carried out 4 times a year. Both organic and mineral fertilizers are used. The first procedure is done in early spring. The second time comes when the buds begin to form, the third - when they fade. The last fertilization takes place in September. Gardeners do not recommend feeding during the flowering period, as this can significantly reduce it.
Reproduction
Clematis "Stasik" can be propagated by layering or by dividing the bush. Seed propagation is impossible.
In the first case, the procedure is carried out in the spring. The lateral branches are pressed to the ground with staples so that at least one kidney remains after them.
She is sprinkled with soil. A young stalk appears in the next season, is cut off and planted in a new place.
In the second case, it is necessary to divide the bush into 2 parts with a shovel. One of them, along with the roots, is simply planted in a new place. It is not worth worrying about the adaptation period, the plant takes root well.
