One of the most popular solutions that make the interior of the room cozy and original is the decor of flower pots, made by hand. This option for decorating containers does not require significant financial costs, and its result is able to meet the expectations of most connoisseurs of beauty and style. Also noteworthy is the versatility of decoration, well suited both for a suburban home and for any city apartment.

When it is necessary?

There are a number of reasons why decorating pots is desirable, and often the only right solution. In some cases, a few spectacular touches are enough to transform the selected containers, while in others, product owners have to work hard.

Practice shows that the considered solution is most relevant for the following situations:

  • the appearance of the pots used does not combine well enough with the decorative features of the plants in them;
  • containers do not attract due attention to themselves or, conversely, are excessively bright and do not fit into the more moderate interior of the room;
  • the pots are badly worn out, and therefore their appearance is far from ideal;
  • the containers used have noticeable defects (for example, chips or deeply ingrained dirt);
  • the plant owner likes exclusive designer pots, but their cost seems too high to him;
  • the desire to create a decor that is characterized by maximum originality;
  • the desire to bring into the interior of the room several stylish and effective details, which are chosen as flower pots.

Also, decoration can be of interest to creative people who independently implement their original design ideas.

How to prepare a pot for decorating?

In addition to a positive attitude, contributing to the successful solution of the task, the owner of the converted containers should pay attention to their preliminary preparation. This procedure is not difficult, providing for the implementation of several basic steps:

  • elimination of contamination, as well as decorative coatings and drawings (if any);
  • washing and thorough drying of the selected containers;
  • surface treatment of products with sandpaper.

The latter action contributes to a better fixation of decorative materials, minimizing the likelihood of delamination, swelling and cracking.

In addition, some experts advise covering the surface of the flower container with acrylic paint. It is desirable that its tone matches well with the colors of the materials used to decorate the pot.

How to choose a design?

Like any other products belonging to the category of "hand made", decorated flower pots are distinguished by the variety of their external design. First of all, the option of decorating such containers is determined by the imagination of their owner, however, there are general recommendations that allow you to solve this problem with the best final result. They help to select the most suitable design ideas that match the material of the converted container and the decor used.

  • Plastic pots go well with the vast majority of jewelry. This is largely due to the properties of such products, which provide flawless adhesion of decorative elements to the transformed surface. Especially often plastic containers are decorated with cereals and fabrics, although other solutions are also popular (primarily decoupage).
  • Porcelain pots, rationally decorate with eggshells and paints. A design that assumes the presence of a painting, effectively emphasized by original frames, is very suitable for such products.
  • Clay containers go well with seashells, ropes and fabrics. Using this decor, you can create original compositions in which the marine theme will be clearly traced.
  • Containers made of glass, it is advisable to decorate with paper and threads. To solve this problem, the already mentioned decoupage is well suited, the alternative to which is the use of yarn.

As for the transformation of metal flower pots, it involves the use of threads, ropes and fabrics. Such products look especially impressive in original burlap covers or in “clothes” using the yarn-bombing technique - street knitting.

Design options

Among the huge number of solutions that allow you to decorate a flower pot, we can single out those that are most in demand. Each of them has its own remarkable features, and therefore deserves a separate consideration.

Painting

With this method, which is the least complicated, any container used for growing plants can be transformed. A variety of paints are suitable for solving this problem - both ordinary enamels and special ones used by artists and created on the basis of acrylic or oil. Having made a bet on their use, the owner of the pot should consider the following useful recommendations:

  • the selected tone should correspond to the color scheme that prevails in the room;
  • to give the container the most effective look, it can be decorated with abstract painting and / or original landscapes;
  • based on rational considerations, you only need to decorate the outer surface of the flower pot.

Depending on the characteristics of the transformed container, its surface can be made glossy or matte, one- or multi-colored, bright or pastel.

Decoupage

The described technique of decorating flower pots enjoys a consistently high popularity, which is explained by the originality of the results achieved with its help. It involves the use of napkins, colored corrugated paper or special decoupage cards, with which you can decorate a variety of surfaces. Decor connoisseurs love this technique for the variety of design solutions it offers - patterns, symbols, impressive paintings and their combinations.

Before you start decorating a pot in this way, you need to pay attention to its material and appearance. It is desirable that the container is made of glass, ceramic or plastic and painted in any of the light colors. As for further actions, their sequence looks like this:

  • separate the napkin layer with the image and lean it tightly against the surface of the pot;
  • slowly cover the paper product with decoupage glue;
  • wait for a slight soaking of the napkin, necessary for its reliable fixation;
  • leave the container to be decorated for a while until it dries completely;
  • cover the surface of the pot with varnish, which gives it a beautiful shine and additional resistance to mechanical stress.

This technique should be used by anyone who wants to decorate their premises in a vintage style, as well as connoisseurs of many other directions - for example, the Mediterranean style, classicism or baroque.

Mosaic

As you know, it is not recommended to use broken and even cracked dishes for their intended purpose. Guided by this rule, most people throw away worn-out products, but the latter can be found in a very unusual application - as a mosaic for flower pots. To solve the described problem, you must:

  • carefully chop off the required number of small fragments, "armed" with nippers;
  • glue suitable elements to the surface of the container to be decorated (following a certain pattern or in a chaotic manner);
  • fill the gaps between the fragments using construction grout.

After half an hour, the excess of the latter must be carefully removed using dry napkins.

If there are no broken dishes in the house, you can use the original alternative - old CDs. Their fragments will decorate the pot no worse, and cutting such products is much easier, due to their small thickness. In addition, plant containers can be decorated with broken glass, ceramic tiles, beads, coins, and other suitable mosaic materials.

Knitting

Talking about the methods of decorating flower pots at home, one cannot fail to mention knitting - an art that has absorbed the centuries-old experience of domestic and foreign masters. The most demanded solutions related to this category.

  • Cases for decorated containers. To create such products, you need skills in working with knitting needles or the ability to crochet pots.
  • Bright canvases for tight-fitting containers in the style of street knitting. In such cases, it is better to use materials decorated with uplifting patterns, stripes visible from afar and other loose elements.
  • Needlework using macrame technique. This option, which provides for a spectacular weaving in knots, is able to decorate any, even the most unpresentable pot.

As for people who do not know how to knit, then they can use a simple and at the same time winning solution, involving the use of the remains of old things - cut off sleeves from a sweater or fragments of leggings. Other garments are also suitable - for example, women's or children's socks that have a bright color.

Textile

Most often, the method under consideration is preferred by those who wish to update and decorate flower pots with minimal effort and time. Solving this problem, you can use one fabric for all convertible containers, and several - for each product separately. The choice of a particular option is determined by the peculiarities of the interior and the taste preferences of the owner of the premises.

When applying this material, the performer should adhere to the algorithm below.

  • Prepare the desired piece of fabric that is wide enough to wrap around the pot and long enough to allow for top and bottom allowances.
  • Applying PVA glue to the container to be decorated using a brush. The same action must be performed in relation to the fabric.
  • Bonding the prepared fragment to the outer surface of the pot. Special attention should be paid to the leveling of the fabric - in order to avoid the formation of folds.
  • Execution of cuts on allowances with subsequent lubrication of them with PVA. The lower of the formed fragments must be glued to the bottom of the pot, and the upper ones must be fixed on the inner surface of the container being decorated.

To add extra elegance to transformable products, they can be decorated with ribbons, miniature straps, fine yarn, lace or coffee beans.

The use of burlap is also noteworthy - a rough and durable fabric preferred by connoisseurs of rustic style.

Seashells

To translate this idea into reality, you will need the gifts of nature, which can be easily found on any sea beach.Combinations of seashells with colored stones, shards of dishes, glass pieces and coins are especially effective. To decorate a flower pot in this way, you must:

  • thoroughly clean all decorative elements;
  • apply construction glue to the surface of the container and to each of the items used to transform it;
  • press down decorative elements for a few seconds, ensuring their proper fixation;
  • fill the resulting voids with paint or a combination of glue and cement, the consistency of which should resemble thick sour cream;
  • carefully remove excess material (after it dries);
  • cover the containers with varnish.

In addition, the pots can be additionally decorated with sand that is applied at an angle to a thin layer of glue.

Eggshell

Being very affordable, the described material has another tangible advantage - ease of use. It can be used successfully both naturally and in dyed form by following the guidelines listed below:

  • before you start decorating, the shell must be cleaned of film and external contamination;
  • the surface of the pot to which the material in question will be attached must be greased with glue;
  • the pieces of shells should be pressed tightly to the container to be decorated, but not too much - in order to avoid mechanical damage;
  • if the attached fragments are displaced, they can be corrected using a thin sharp object (for example, a toothpick or a needle);
  • after gluing the pieces of the shell, it remains to cover the surface of the product with varnish.

Using this technique, you can create both a frame and a complex drawing. Another option is also popular, which involves filling the entire surface of the container to be decorated with shell fragments.

Groats

Experience shows that using cereals to decorate flower pots is no more difficult than using eggshells. As for the solutions that are most popular when conducting master classes, these include millet, buckwheat, peas and lentils.

To decorate a container for plants with millet, you need:

  • prepare a place for work by placing several newspapers on it (in order to avoid paint getting on its surface);
  • take napkins and tear them into fragments (approximately 6x8 cm);
  • dilute PVA glue with water in a ratio of 1: 1, grease them with napkins and lean them tightly against the surface of the pot;
  • make small folds on the glued fragments using a thin wooden stick;
  • paste over the entire surface of the container with fragments of napkins and dry it;
  • apply undiluted PVA to the folds, pour millet between them and remove the remaining glue with a sponge;
  • re-dry the decorated pot;
  • apply silver acrylic paint to the entire surface of the product.

As soon as the latter dries, a thin layer of golden paint should be applied to the places decorated with millet, after which it remains to varnish the pot.

Materials at hand

Despite the fact that many objects around a person seem unremarkable, they are also used to decorate flower pots. So, you can use it as a decoration.

  • Metal lids for soft drinks. Attached to the plant container, such elements can "look" at the viewer both from the outside and from the inside.
  • Simple pencils with an eraser, the same size and appearance. This solution is especially suitable for pots located in a creative workshop.
  • Twine, which tightly wraps the transformed container. It is advisable to start this action from the bottom, applying glue only at the top and bottom of the product.
  • Herbarium decor. As an example of such decorations, one can cite everything that the nature surrounding man is rich in - small twigs, dry flowers and leaves, fruits and berries, fragments of bark and seeds.Selected elements are attached with glue and varnished for greater strength.

The industrial paraphernalia represented by screws, nuts, bolts and many other elements also deserves attention.

Finally, it remains to state that decorating flower pots is a relatively simple and very exciting activity, the number of supporters of which is growing from year to year. It allows you to transform a variety of containers for plants, and everyone can be convinced of this on their own experience.
