Belarusian breeders did their best when they worked on breeding the Zhuravinka potato variety. The result obtained is distinguished by high ratings in many respects: safety, productivity and resistance to the effects of various factors. The resulting culture meets all world standards.
Breeding history
The variety was bred by Belarusian specialists together with Russian breeders. Zhuravinka's potatoes were officially recognized in 2005.
Description of the variety
An important advantage of this potato variety is its ability to withstand any damage. Potatoes are also highly preserved: by the spring, only a few percent of the crop may deteriorate.
The tubers of the variety have a number of their characteristics. They are oval or round in shape. In weight, they can reach from 89 grams. The surface is covered with a kind of mesh, it can be either bumpy or smooth. Small eyes are scattered on its surface. The skin of the tubers is red.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
The Crane shrub is small in size with straight and strong shoots that deviate to the sides. Each of the bushes has 6-7 stems, up to one centimeter thick. Leaves are medium, veins are clearly visible on them. At the edges, the leaves are wavy.
Inflorescences grow large, they are lilac-purple in color. Berries and seeds, as a rule, do not form. After planting, the plant emerges quickly, the aerial part germinates the fastest. A month after planting, the bush already has a very developed root system.
The root crops of the variety most often have a relief surface, but sometimes they can be smooth. The skin of the potato is very thin and red in color. The weight of one root vegetable can be up to 139 grams.
Purpose and taste of tubers
Zhuravinka potatoes are described as a variety with high flavor indicators. Potatoes of this variety are the leader in starch content - 14.6-19.6%. With this amount, the variety can be used to make starch.
It is recommended to make chips from Zhuravinka in industrial production. As a product for cooking, it is most suitable for mashed potatoes or casseroles.
Maturation
Occurs relatively late: it takes up to 100 days from the time of planting to the start of the collection period.
Yield
Zhuravinka is characterized by a very high yield: from 177 to 242 centners can be harvested per hectare, this is an average figure. There are cases when the yield reached 640 centners. One potato bush can produce 15 to 18 medium or large tubers.
Harvesting is carried out when the tops of the plant dries up and turns a little yellow. Moreover, the yield of the variety does not in any way depend on changes in air temperature.
Growing regions
It grows best in central Russia, in regions such as Volgo-Vyatka, Central and North-West. It is found in the regions: from the Vologda to the Perm Territory, but thanks to all the features that have been invested in the variety by breeders, Zhuravinka takes root in other parts of the country.
Growing and care
The culture is not too demanding to care for. However, certain rules must be followed.
- Landing rules
A favorable place for planting Zhuravinki is determined by the terrain: in the southern regions they are planted closer to April, in the northern ones - in mid-May.
Correct landing sequence.
On loamy soil, a hole is dug up to 7 centimeters deep, on sandy soil - up to 10.
The soil should be loose, plowed and moist. The soil is also cleared of weeds.
The recommended distance between seedlings should be equal to 30 centimeters.
Before placing the seedling in the dug hole, it is recommended to treat it with a growth stimulant.
- Care
Despite the unpretentiousness of the potato in relation to the climate, it is still worth watering. It is also recommended to systematically huddle the plantings after moistening the soil. And for the first time, potatoes are spud when its shoots grow up to 20 centimeters: then the soil is carefully loosened. This ensures more air flow to the roots of the plant. The second hilling is carried out before flowering.
During the rainy periods of summer, potatoes are treated with antifungal agents.
It is undesirable to use too much nitrogenous fertilizers, otherwise the potatoes will stop growing and the ovaries will not form. It is recommended to feed the plant with sawdust, superphosphate and various organic fertilizers.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Soil requirements
The yield of Zhuravinka depends on the quality of the soil. The most suitable is:
black soil;
sandy soil;
peat soil.
In areas where the soil is characterized by high acidity, before planting potatoes, it is recommended to loosen the soil, and also add sawdust or compost to it.
It is necessary to plow the soil to a depth of 10-15 cm: on sandy and sandy loam soils up to once, twice - on clay.
Planting on the soil where plants of the Solanaceae family were grown a year ago is undesirable.
Disease and pest resistance
- Pests
Zhuravinka potatoes are susceptible to the effects of a number of pests:
golden cyst nematode;
Colorado beetle;
bear;
wireworm.
There are no specific remedies in the fight against nematode. In order to protect nearby bushes, the affected plant must be immediately dug up and completely burned in a distant place.
The remedies for the Colorado potato beetle are standard: chemicals, spray suspensions, and the usual capture of larvae and adults.
In order to scare away a bear from the plant, experts advise spreading coniferous tree branches on the ground near a potato bush and periodically loosen the soil.And also a solution of one piece of laundry soap per 50 liters of water, which must be poured directly into the holes, also helps well.
Wireworms, as a rule, do not harm the plant much. But if the roots are still affected, and the stems begin to turn black, then various pesticides are used against the pest.
- Diseases
Zhuravinka is immune to potato crayfish, black leg and various viruses.
The plant may periodically suffer from late blight. Its presence in potatoes can be identified by dark markings on the leaf blade and yellow bloom at the base of the leaf. In order to overcome this disease, the plant is sprayed with copper sulfate.
The buds of the tubers of the variety can be affected by common scab, which is found only when they are dug up. With a massive defeat of the entire area, it is sprayed with TMTD pesticides.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
