Early potato varieties are an excellent lifesaver for a quick harvest of fresh root crops. Zhukovsky early has excellent taste, attractive appearance, high marketability (90-92%) and good immunity, quite sufficient for short-term storage (with the exception of seed).
Breeding history
The originators of the variety are I. M. Yashina, B. A. Pisarev, N. N. Mamicheva, A. P. Glukhov, V. S. Andreeva, L. I. Shamakova, L. N. Konovalova, N. I. Petrunya ... The variety was registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 1993.
Description of the variety
The variety belongs to the pink-colored group, which means red-violet-pink shades of flowers. Potatoes are rich in nutrients, trace elements and vitamins:
starch;
amino acids;
folic acid;
vitamins B, C, H, PP;
potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, selenium, copper, chlorine, sulfur, iron, chromium, fluorine, molybdenum, titanium, silicon, boron, vanadium, iodine, phosphorus, sodium, titanium, tin, cobalt.
Positive traits;
good taste;
early maturity (60 days);
high resistance to heat and shelf life;
significant increase in root crops after the flowering period;
thin and pliable rind, which makes cleaning comfortable and reduces waste.
Among the shortcomings, the inability to resist is noted:
aphids;
Colorado beetle;
spider mite.
If potatoes are grown in a greenhouse, then another risk factor is added - the whitefly.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
Semi-spreading, medium-sized, stem-type bushes are covered with small dissected green leaves with a glossy surface, well-visible veins, located in pairs along the stem. Each bush has an average of 10 to 12 rounded-oval pink tubers weighing 100-120 g. The skin is smooth, thin, with shallow lilac-red eyes. Among the declared positive qualities of the variety is the disregard for mechanical damage.
Purpose and taste of tubers
Zhukovsky tubers of early culinary type B have a table purpose, poor cooking - the amount of starch does not exceed 10-12%. At the same time, the white pulp darkens very slightly both in boiled and raw form. Root crops are stored for quite a long time when harvested in early August, when they are finally ripe.
Maturation
The variety belongs to the early maturing - from the emergence of seedlings to harvesting, 70-80 days pass.
Yield
Zhukovsky early is considered high-yielding, since its average indicators are 400-450 c / ha, and the maximum recorded figures fluctuate within 450 c / ha.
Growing regions
The variety is adapted for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region, North-West, Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Middle Volga and Nizhnevolzhsky, North Caucasian, as well as in the Ural, Far East and West Siberian regions.
Growing and care
To accelerate germination, potato tubers are pre-germinated. The temperature range for this is quite wide: from 4 to 20 degrees Celsius. In this case, the seed is periodically moistened if the process takes place in a dry room. Professionals advise covering the potatoes at this time with white paper or cloth to protect them from direct sunlight. In order to disinfect and strengthen the immune system, the tubers are treated with a pink solution of potassium permanganate.
For planting, the length of shoots from 1 cm is permissible, since the germinated material tends to give a greater number of shoots, and therefore, forms a larger number of potatoes.
Before planting, potatoes must be kept warm - hypothermia leads to a failure of running processes.
Organization of planting cover with film or lutrasil reduces germination time and accelerates growth processes. After the establishment of stable heat, the covers are removed.
Tubers can be planted both in traditional holes and in rows, under a plow, while maintaining a distance between potatoes of at least 25 cm.The optimal weight of planting material is from 80 g.
Further care consists in weeding, hilling, monitoring the condition of plants and timely treatments against pests and diseases. In a persistent drought, compulsory watering is needed. Top dressing is carried out several times per season. During planting, special fertilizers, superphosphate or wood ash are used. 2 weeks after planting, the seedlings are fed with organic matter to saturate the plants with nitrogen - infusion of mullein or bird droppings. Pour 0.5 liters of solution under each bush, made in proportions of 1 tbsp. l. infusion for 1 bucket of water. After another 2 weeks, the potatoes are fed with potash fertilizers, and 2 decades before harvesting, superphosphate and potassium sulfate, diluted in a bucket of water, are introduced.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Soil requirements
For Zhukovsky, there is no fundamental difference in what type of soil to grow and bear fruit. For him, both sandy loam and loam, as well as black soil and soddy-podzolic soils, are equally good. Constant light is much more important, since potatoes, like all nightshades, do not develop well in the shade. Compliance with the principles of crop rotation and a balanced mineral composition have a positive effect on the quality and quantity of the crop. It is not recommended to plant potatoes in one place for longer than 2-3 seasons.
And also a high pH level has a depressing effect on the culture, therefore acidified lands require the obligatory introduction of lime, dolomite flour, chalk, gypsum, lime fluff. All these minerals perfectly normalize the acid-base balance. When digging, 10 kilograms of organic matter (humus, compost) and peat are added per square meter of a clay area. For sandy loam soils, organic matter and clay will be needed, and for peat bogs - 1 bucket of manure, sand and clay.
Required climatic conditions
Potatoes of this variety have medium drought tolerance, which must be taken into account when planting.In arid regions, you will have to take care of additional moisture, or even abandon the variety.
Disease and pest resistance
The variety has more than satisfactory indicators of resistance to diseases and pests.
Moderate resistance to viruses M, S.
Good resistance to viruses Y (PVY), X (PVX), L (PLRV).
Confident resistance to potato crayfish, golden nematode, rhizoctonia (black scab), late blight of leaves, but susceptibility to late blight of tubers is noted.
Potatoes are at risk of being affected by aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and Colorado potato beetles, which can lead to partial or complete crop loss. In order to prevent such an outcome, at the first sign of danger, it is necessary to apply insecticide treatments. Adherents of folk methods can replace them with chemical exposure.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
