Breeding history

This potato comes from distant Peru. The author of the culture was the Peruvian breeder Jorge Alberto Espinoza, who went all the way of creating varietal potatoes from crossing to the official release of the crop. In our country, the variety is not yet very common, since it is very difficult to find planting material for such potatoes. the Unica variety was brought to Russia by a local official. At first, it was grown in Omsk, after which it began to spread to other regions and regions.

Description of the variety

Domestic gardeners, who nevertheless managed to grow the Peruvian variety Unica, unanimously note that it is not for nothing that potatoes bear this name. He fell in love with people because of its unique qualities: unpretentious care, the ability to grow on absolutely any soil, high yields of huge fruits with excellent taste and excellent keeping quality.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

Unica is a tall shrub with multiple shoots. They are more than a meter high. The plant has strong brown colored stems. Medium leafiness with small light green leaves. Unica tubers are large or very large, oval in shape. The peel is rough. The average weight of root crops is from 400 to 750 grams. The peel of the potato is raspberry-colored; the cut shows yellow flesh. Each bush is capable of producing up to 15 huge potatoes.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Unica large-fruited potatoes do not boil during cooking. Even the taste is unique: when eating boiled potatoes, one gets the full impression that it is salty, with a slight sourness, but not insipid. Thanks to such a specific taste, you don't even need to add spices.

But it is not only the taste that distinguishes the overseas vegetable. Potato tubers contain a lot of nutrients, among them there is a lot of potassium, phosphorus, various vitamins.

Maturation

Unica is a mid-season potato crop. From emergence to maturation, 80-95 days should pass.

Yield

The variety is considered to be high yielding. Up to 320 kg of large potatoes are dug from one hundred square meters, which, in terms of buckets, is about 40.

Growing regions

One of the distinguishing features of the culture is its good adaptability to any conditions. This makes it possible to grow the variety in any of the regions of the Russian Federation.

Growing and care

Like many potato varieties, Unicu is best planted in early April (in the south) and in the first two weeks of May (middle lane). In the case of landing in the Urals or Siberia, this should be done only after May 15.

The Peruvian variety is undemanding to the composition of the soil, but it has been noticed that it bears fruit best of all on sandy, loamy and slightly acidic soils. For the cultivation of Uniki, it is better to choose sun-drenched areas where groundwater does not come close to the surface.

For planting potatoes, the site must be prepared, and it is better to do this in the fall, planting the land with green manure, and then in October they must be cut off and embedded in the soil, increasing its fertility.

Care procedures for Peruvian large-fruited potatoes consist of watering, loosening, feeding, hilling, which can create some difficulty due to the large size of the bushes.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

The Unica variety has a strong immunity, as well as resistance to most dangerous diseases and attacks of insect pests. However, if any rules of agricultural technology are violated, scab, late blight, powdery mildew may develop on the bushes, which can negatively affect the quantity and quality of the crop.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
