Potato Sonny is sometimes called a species obtained by folk selection. There were times when signs of transgenicity were seen in it, and this is not surprising - tubers weighing up to half a kilogram can come across in the harvest from the hole. Official information did not confirm either modification or national origin, and not the inclusion of the variety in the State Register is explained by individual points that could lead to the lack of official approval.

Breeding history

Summer residents and farmers obtain seed material in various ways - by exchange, purchases in online stores, by mail from other regions. The lack of information other than that obtained from descriptions and from our own experience led to the spread of the name Sonny. However, after suspicions of genetic modification, etymological studies were carried out, and experts call two versions of its origin:

  • grown in the Leningrad Research Institute of Agriculture and is undergoing varietal testing;

  • the fruit of the hard work of the Primorsky Research Institute of Agriculture and the Far Eastern Experimental Station VIZR in the 70-80s of the last century.

Soviet scientists then developed potato varieties Bogatyr, Sineva, Filatovsky and some others. According to the descriptions, Sonny and Bogatyr are one and the same variety, with exceptional qualities and features that are not inherent in the most modern developments.

The author is considered the Federal Research Center of Agrobiotechnology named after V.I. Seagulls, but neither researchers nor experts agree with folk authorship.

Description of the variety

It is no coincidence that Potato Sonny is called a variety with great potential. Its distinctive features are a serious argument in choosing this particular variety. The quality of care and soil, climatic features allow you to get variable results:

  • tubers ranging in size from 80 to 500 g, even, oval or round;

  • the number of fruits in each hole is from 8 to 40 pieces;

  • resistance to common diseases;

  • the Colorado potato beetle settles on the bushes of this variety last;

  • if there is no watering, and the summer is dry, the tubers grow medium in size, and not small, like in other varieties.

Potatoes Sonny - late-ripening variety. The harvest finally ripens in 3-3.5 months. This is more than offset by the ability to get 5-10 kg of large fruits from the bush, with a strong skin, excellent keeping quality and the ability to transfer transportation over long distances if grown for commercial purposes. The lack of government tests and officially released statistics is not a reason to abandon experiments. Some gardeners say that the first harvest is simply overwhelming in weight, quality and quantity of tubers.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The late-ripening variety is distinguished from other plants by low and compact bushes with erect stems and relatively few leaves.

  1. The growth of bushes is determined by the soil - the more fertile it is, the higher they are. They can reach 65-70 cm.

  2. The foliage is emerald-colored leaves, the flowers are white, collected in high corollas, which quickly fall off due to their large size, which is why berries are practically not formed on the bush.

  3. Removing the tubers from the hole, you can find that they are heterogeneous in size and shape, but mostly large, covered with a slightly rough to the touch skin, creamy, with an imperceptible reticular pattern.

  4. Even root crops have a small number of eyes, mainly concentrated at the top.By making a cut that does not darken, you can see the white flesh.

Keeping quality and transportability perfectly complement the characteristics of Sonny potatoes. It can be stored for a long time in suitable conditions, for your own needs and for sale on markets or in retail chains. So far, they only talk about growing it on their own land plots, but this can also become a profitable enterprise.

Purpose and taste of tubers

In different sources, you can find statements about the usual taste of the root crop, but this is an incorrect statement. Potatoes with large tubers contain a huge amount of micro- and macroelements, vitamins, 14-15% starch. It is called a canteen because it is suitable for making soups, boiling, stewing, frying and freezing as a semi-finished product for making French fries.

During heat treatment, it does not lose useful components and does not deform. Easy cleaning thanks to the small number of eyes that are not embedded in the flesh is an added bonus. The large dimensions allow you to quickly clean the amount required for the dish with minimal waste in the form of waste.

Maturation

After 120-140 days from the moment the sprouts hatch, harvesting can be done. This means that you need to keep an eye on the long-term weather calendar so that the return cold and early frosts do not damage the seed or the already ripe tubers. An impressive amount can be obtained in regions where weather conditions do not rush the gardener to harvest. But long-term stay in the soil after drying is also not recommended.

Yield

The lack of official data is more than compensated by the reviews of gardeners. The standard amount of harvest from a bush is on average up to 7 kg, but with good agricultural technology, it is quite possible to get 10 kg. In confirmation of this - the possible number of tubers from 8 to 15 under unfavorable conditions and up to 4 dozen, which seem incredible, but have been recorded repeatedly.

Growing and care

Care is the main condition for obtaining the yield of potatoes Sonny. The variety is undemanding to the soil, although it is easier to get significant yields on light fertile soils. Watering and feeding, hilling, weeding are factors of care to which he is sensitive and reacts with good yields.

Planting is somewhat different from modern recommendations - after a dormant period, about a month before planting in the soil, the tubers are transferred to a bright and warm room for germination. On the site, you need to do a deep digging, and add humus with compost or wood ash. It is possible to plant only after warming up the soil and air to at least +10 degrees.

Seed material is used in two types: small purchased or selected tubers when sorting the crop, as well as sprouted eyes. They are cut from germinated potatoes, and the rest is used for other needs. The cut on the cut out eye is dried.

You can increase the yield by planting in a square-nesting way, watering the bushes every week and 2 times a month with organic infusions. For this purpose, you can use purchased growth stimulants, ash or special fertilizers for potatoes. When calculating the harvest time, it must be borne in mind that the formation of tubers begins from the moment the sprouts germinate, and this will take 1-2 weeks.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But it is unlikely that it will be possible to grow a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If the harvesting is delayed, the potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
