The Dutch potato varieties have long gained popularity among gardeners and farmers. This is due to their unpretentious care, quick adaptation to the climate, resistance to many viruses and high yields. One of the popular varieties is the Sifra potato.
Breeding history
The medium late Sifra potatoes are a striking representative of the Dutch selection. The authorship belongs to Biemond Cornelius Johannus and Jansen Klomp Martin F. V. Approved for use on the territory of the Russian Federation since 2010. The Sifra nightshade culture is zoned in the North-West, Volgo-Vyatka and Central Black Earth regions. In addition, potatoes are massively grown in Ukraine and Moldova.
Description of the variety
The Dutch potato variety is an intermediate type that can be medium or tall. It has erect or semi-erect powerful stems that can spread slightly. The bush is characterized by moderate foliage with medium-sized leaves with wavy edges of a dark green color and a developed root system, thanks to which up to 14-15 large tubers ripen under each bush.
The plant begins to bloom in June. At this time, large snow-white flowers, collected in corollas, are formed on each bush.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
Sifra is a prime example of large-fruited Dutch varieties. Tubers weighing from 107 to 150 grams ripen under a healthy bush. The shape of the potato is correct, close to ideal - round or absolutely round. The color of the potato is classic - light yellow. The peel of root crops is moderately dense, smooth, slightly shiny, rarely covered with small eyes, which are shallowly planted.
The dug out potatoes are transported over long distances without loss of taste and marketability. The storage life of tubers is long, if you follow the storage rules - temperature + 3 ... 4 degrees and humidity no more than 60-65%.
Purpose and taste of tubers
Sifra potatoes, like most other Dutch varieties, have a rich taste and pleasant aroma. The snow-white pulp has a delicate, oily consistency without powdery and wateriness. After cleaning and heat treatment, the pulp of the root vegetables does not darken. Boiled potatoes acquire a pleasant sweetness and oiliness, without dryness. The starch content in tubers is average - up to 16%. When cooking, the vegetable does not boil very much, does not crumble.
The variety is suitable for all types of cooking - potatoes are boiled peeled and peeled, stewed, baked, fried in a pan and deep-fried, mashed potatoes, added to salads, first courses. It is worth noting that mashed potatoes from this potato variety are tender and airy. Due to their low calorie content, tubers are included in baby and diet food.
Maturation
Medium late variety. The growing season lasts from 95 to 115 days. Germination occurs after 15-20 days, and sprouts appear very amicably. The first digging is done in the second half of July. Root crops reach full maturity by mid-September - at this time, you can massively dig out potatoes. The first sign of tubers ripening is yellowing and wilting of the tops.
Yield
The potatoes are claimed to be high yielding. On average, from 1 hectare of plantations, you can dig up from 179 to 403 centners of leveled tubers. The maximum yield indicator reaches more than 500 centners per 1 hectare of plantations. The yield directly depends on compliance with agrotechnical recommendations, the choice of soil and weather conditions.
Growing and care
Planting tubers is best done in a stable temperature regime of + 12 ... 15 degrees, when there is no likelihood of recurrent spring frosts. As a rule, this is the second half of May. For planting, medium-sized tubers with good shoots about 2 cm long are selected. The right place for planting is where zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage and greens used to grow. Optimal for planting is considered to be a scheme of 30x65 cm.
Potato care consists of standard measures: watering as needed, weeding and loosening the row spacings, which will ensure air permeability of the soil, hilling bushes, which protects against temperature fluctuations, fertilizing, preventing viruses and insect infestations.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Soil requirements
Potatoes grow comfortably in sandy and sandy soils, which are fluffy, fertilized, moist, breathe well and have a neutral acidity. Potatoes also grow well on dry peat soils. It is not recommended to plant potatoes in loamy and heavy soils, as well as in acidic soils.
Required climatic conditions
Sifra potatoes are a drought-resistant and thermophilic crop that easily tolerates heat, short-term shade, but is susceptible to sharp temperature fluctuations. The site for planting is chosen flat, without swampiness and lowlands, where moisture often stagnates, which contributes to rotting of the rhizomes of the bushes. It is important that there is always light on the site - in the morning and in the afternoon, a lot of sun and reliable protection from drafts and cold winds.
Disease and pest resistance
The variety has a strong immunity that protects against a number of diseases and fungal infections. Potatoes are resistant to cancer and golden nematodes. Average resistance of the plant to late blight of tubers and leaves. The biggest crop problem is common scab and Colorado potato beetle attacks.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
