Potatoes Nevsky cannot be called a novelty - it is about half a century old. But this is just such a variety that bears fruit perfectly in any season, while its yield does not depend on either care measures or climatic conditions.

Breeding history

Work on the development of a new variety began in the 70s of the XX century at the Leningrad Research Institute of Agriculture "Belogorka". A group of domestic breeders, employees of the Institute, including V. Prilepov, E. Osipova, M. Mingova, G. Loginova and E. Sharova, crossed parental forms of such varieties as Candidate and Veselovskaya. The selection resulted in the Nevsky variety. In 1975 he was sent for variety testing, and in 1982 the culture was registered in the State Register. The potato spread quickly throughout the country.

Description of the variety

Reviews of gardeners about the wonderful variety Nevsky are the most enthusiastic. For several decades now, this potato has been demonstrating excellent taste, decent yield, resistance to disease, and ease of maintenance.

The potatoes of the variety in question can quite easily withstand a short drought, but a prolonged cold snap can lead to a significant drop in yield.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The bush of Nevsky potatoes is semi-erect, has an average height. The height of the spreading plant is 55-60 centimeters. There are many leaves, they are also medium in size, painted in a light green tone, the edges are slightly wavy. There are compact inflorescences with numerous white flowers. The flowering is profuse, but short.

Glossy leaves reflect the rays of the sun, so moisture evaporates a little. If the summer is dry, the variety has a tendency to roll the leaves into a tube: this way they reduce the evaporation area, which makes the plant resistant to drought.

The skin of the tuber is light beige, the potato itself is white inside. The eyes are pink and small. The tubers weigh from 90 to 130 grams. There are 17-20 of them on the bush. Root crops are oval or round in shape.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Table potatoes Nevsky belongs to culinary type B. It can be boiled, fried, put in soups. The taste is noted as satisfactory and good.

Maturation

Mid-early ripening of potatoes suggests that Nevsky can be harvested 80-95 days after planting in the ground.

Yield

High-yielding potato variety. On average, from one hectare receive from 380 to 500 centners. The maximum yield was recorded at 60 t / ha.

Growing and care

Growing potatoes Nevsky has a number of features. So, the tubers of this variety have very fragile shoots, in this regard, you should be very careful with the prepared seed material when planting. It is very important to choose the right timing for placing potatoes in the ground.

The planting procedure is possible only when the soil in the region warms up to a depth of 20 cm, and the temperature reaches +16 degrees Celsius. In areas with a warm climate, this event is better planned for the third April decade, in cooler Russian regions, as a rule,potatoes are planted throughout the month of May. Planting of the planting material of the Nevsky variety is carried out in rows according to the scheme of 55x40 centimeters.

Caring for potatoes Nevsky is not particularly difficult. The first shoots usually appear 10-12 days after planting. As for the cultivation technology itself, it all comes down to simple activities, such as:

  • watering;
  • loosening;
  • fertilization;
  • weeding;
  • hilling;
  • control of pests, diseases, their prevention.

Watering Nevsky potatoes is done mainly as needed. Watering once a week will be sufficient, but abundantly. If there is a delayed development of the Nevsky bushes, then the reason may be a deficiency of nutrients in the ground. In this case, it will be necessary to apply a sufficient amount of mineral fertilizers at the root.

Nevsky loves clean soil. Therefore, the potato plantation must be regularly weed-free. During the growing season, 2-3 high-quality weeding is carried out, which are combined with loosening the soil. For Nevsky potatoes, it is necessary to do a fairly high hilling of bushes. The number of hilling also reaches 2-3. As a result of these activities, additional stolons will appear on which tubers grow.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

The culture has pretty good immunity. It is resistant to diseases such as the causative agent of potato cancer, as well as rhizoctonia. Variety Nevsky is moderately susceptible to late blight of tops and tubers.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Review overview

Gardeners leave mostly positive reviews about the Nevsky variety. They believe that this is a completely reliable variety that will not let you go without a crop. Thanks to such qualities as resistance to attacks of pests, various ailments, adaptability to drought and excessive moisture, this variety pleases gardeners and brings a crop of delicious potatoes even in the most unfavorable seasons.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
