Lighthouse is a table potato variety bred by specialists of the State Scientific Institution of the Ural Research Institute of Agriculture and approved for use in 2013. Despite its relative novelty, the variety has already become popular in gardening circles. Let's get to know him better.
Description of the variety
It is a fruitful variety that is not picky to grow and is highly immune to most potato diseases. It can be cultivated in almost any region, but it is especially common in the Volgo-Vyatka region.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
The bush is of an intermediate type, semi-erect, reaches a medium to high height, has green leaves with wavy edges, as well as light purple large flowers. The inflorescence is medium, compact.
12-18 tubers are formed under one bush, each weighing 97-153 g. Tubers are oval, red, smooth, have light yellow flesh. The eyes lie at a shallow depth, and the main advantages of the Mayak variety can be considered its high marketability (88-91%) and excellent keeping quality - 96%.
Purpose and taste of tubers
The lighthouse has a good taste, it is moderately soft, and therefore is suitable for preparing almost any dish. The pulp is dense, homogeneous, does not darken, contains starch in an amount of 14.6-17.3%.
Maturation
The presented variety is medium early, the harvest is carried out 75-85 days after the appearance of the first shoots.
Yield
The lighthouse belongs to the high-yielding varieties. On average, it gives 117-393 c / ha, the maximum result is 401 c / ha.
Growing and care
Landing is carried out only when the soil warms up to a temperature of 8-10 degrees. It is important to prepare the soil in advance, even in the fall, and choose an area for planting, located in the sun and not covered by trees and other objects. Observe the following rules when planting:
- use high-quality planting material;
- leave a distance of 30-35 cm between future plants, 65-75 cm between rows;
- embedment depth - 8-10 cm.
Aftercare is pretty straightforward. Keep in mind that the Lighthouse loves moisture, but cannot stand excess of it. The first time the bed is moistened when shoots appear, then the plants are watered after the formation of inflorescences, and the last watering is carried out after the end of flowering.
The culture responds well to hilling. This procedure oxygenates the soil and increases yields. In addition, during hilling, weeds can be removed that prevent the penetration of nutrients to the roots of potatoes. Gardeners recommend loosening the soil after watering or rain. Periodically, the culture requires feeding with organic and mineral fertilizers.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Soil requirements
The presented variety feels comfortable in soil with good water permeability and aeration, but the composition of the soil does not really matter, since the Lighthouse quickly adapts to any type of soil.
Disease and pest resistance
The presented variety is immune to such ailments as various viruses, potato cancer, mosaic, scab, but sometimes it can be affected by late blight. To prevent this from happening, use only high-quality healthy material for planting, treat the land before planting with herbicides, and if signs of illness appear, spray the plants with copper-containing preparations.
If the culture was attacked by Colorado beetles, bears, wireworms, then use insecticides. Some summer residents use a tincture from the Colorado beetles themselves: they collect them in a jar, fill them with water, leave for several days, dilute them in water and process the potatoes with the resulting solution.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
