The Lyubava potatoes are a worthy example of domestic breeding, for the seed material of which you do not need to pay the cost of transportation and customs duties, reassuring yourself that this is a variety bred abroad. This breeding species is leading in the ratings among the potatoes chosen for breeding by those for whom a good harvest is not a whim, but an urgent need. There are many arguments in favor of Lyubava, ranging from yield and appearance to the excellent reputation of its authors.
Breeding history
In Russia, you cannot find a gardener who would be engaged in the cultivation of useful root crops and did not know the name of the V.I. A. Lorkha. The Lyubava potatoes are the fruit of the joint work of this well-known scientific institution and the Siberian Federal Research Center of Agrobiotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. An early-ripening variety for universal purposes has been included in the State Register for almost two decades, and is recommended for growing in regions with a problematic climate. It was obtained by a whole team of world-famous scientists, so it is not surprising that its description invariably contains superlative epithets.
Description of the variety
Potatoes Lyubava has numerous advantages, focusing on which, you can safely choose it for growing on your site and for industrial purposes:
- unlike other varieties, it does not drain the soil and can be grown for several years in a row in the same place;
- this is an early variety from which you can get a harvest with the first digging (45 days) or the second (55-70 days);
- amazing yield (up to 524 c / ha, which is several tens of kilograms higher than the characteristics of more famous varieties recommended in cold regions);
- even at the first digging, it gives record indicators, which optimally affects the receipt of commercial profit;
- for culinary purposes, it is used in any direction, including for the preparation of mashed potatoes, semi-finished products and chips;
- cultivation is problem-free, the variety is classified as stable and unpretentious.
The susceptibility of the tops to diseases is compensated by the resistance of the tubers: they are practically not susceptible to nematodes, late blight and some other common types of potato diseases. All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology highly appreciated the immunity of the variety, noting other positive aspects: amicable ripening of root crops, their presentability and the ability to transfer transportation over long distances, while maintaining their presentation.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
Medium-high bush is covered with dark green leaves with slightly wavy edges. It gives erect shoots with an average amount of vegetative mass and a few flowers of a beautiful reddish-purple hue.
Each bush produces up to 20 tubers, which ripen quickly and at the same time. They have a dense red skin, slightly rough to the touch.There are few eyes on the surface, and they do not differ in depth. Tubers are characterized by a marketable appearance and high keeping quality, capable of transferring transportation over long distances and storage in proper conditions without any damage. Oval-shaped fruits reach a variable weight: from 110 to 210 g. The number and weight of tubers from one bush give a real idea of the scale of the harvest from a properly planted potato plantation.
Purpose and taste of tubers
In some sources, Lyubava potatoes are positioned as a table potato, but in fact it is a universal variety. It is suitable for all culinary needs: from frying to stewing to boiling, it can be used in semi-finished products for freezing, for making chips. During heat treatment, it does not lose either its taste (of which there are always excellent reviews), or the useful components that are contained in it in abundance. The tubers, which are in a state of technical ripeness, contain micro- and macroelements valuable for the human body, vitamins C and B, and a moderate starch content. The pulp does not break into fibers and does not darken.
Maturation
Disembarkation begins at the end of April and can continue until the end of May. The variety is recommended for planting in regions with a problematic climate, therefore, the timing begins from the moment the soil warms up to a temperature of +10 or more. In this regard, Lyubava has an additional advantage: you can plant it to a depth of 10 cm, without waiting for the soil to warm up deeper.
The first digging is carried out after 45 days, exclusively for sale or for personal consumption. The second time comes in 55-70 days, and this is a period that is counted not from the moment of disembarkation, but from the appearance of the first growths. Harvesting must be done in a timely manner. Prolonged exposure to soil not only impairs the excellent taste inherent in the variety, but also reduces the shelf life and the ability to tolerate transportation.
Yield
Determined exclusively by correct agricultural technology. Lyubava can be planted at a distance of 30 cm, so from a hundred square meters the output is more than the usual amount:
- at the first digging in the ultra-early period, the yield is up to 200 c / ha, but it can be 150 c / ha;
- the second digging on day 55 will yield up to 270 c / ha, and this is higher than that of other varieties recommended for growing in regions with a cold climate;
- the maximum possible yield is 65-70 days, the bar is indicated here 400 c / ha, but there is information about record figures - up to 520 c / ha.
The special value of the variety lies in the amicable and abundant ripening of tubers: they are almost all large and smooth, so when sorting the crop it can be difficult to collect small tubers for planting in the next season.
Growing and caring
Potatoes can be planted in furrows (in large farms, with mechanized cultivation) or in holes according to the standard scheme. The row spacing is 0.7 m, the distance between the holes is 0.3 m. Loosening of the soil is carried out after watering or abundant natural precipitation, preventing the formation of a dense crust and providing aeration to the root system. Watering, feeding and hilling (twice a season) are mandatory moments in growing.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
