Lorch is a classic old potato variety, bred back in 1922. However, even today it is massively grown in farmsteads, and it is far from the last place in the potato market.

Breeding history

This variety can be safely called the oldest Soviet one, because the breeding work on the creation of the variety was carried out from 1922 to 1927 on the plantations of the Korenevskaya breeding station (Moscow region), at present there is a research institute of potato farming named after A.G. Lorkh, a scientist - breeder and, in fact, the author of this variety, named after him. The culture feels equally well in different regions of the country. The variety was registered in the State Register in 1931, and even an inventor's certificate No. 1 was obtained.

Zoned for the Central Black Earth Region. First of all, the culture was created for use in the food industry. After admission, the variety quickly became popular. For almost 100 years, the potato crop has been confidently in the top five most cultivated varieties for the Russian middle zone.

Description of the variety

The culture is frost-resistant. So, if young sprouts have suffered from recurrent frosts, they have the ability to fully recover in 1 week, and this does not affect either fruiting or ripening. The culture has many positive qualities that have made it so popular.

  • good yield indicators;
  • in addition to frost resistance, it demonstrates drought resistance;
  • leveled root crops, can be removed mechanically;
  • versatility, high tasting ratings;
  • low exactingness to agricultural technology, type of soil;
  • the possibility of long-term storage, good transportability.

There are also disadvantages: the variety does not tolerate highly moistened soil, it is not too resistant to diseases.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The culture in question is a tall plant, it can reach a height of 80 centimeters. An upright, non-spreading bush consists of 5 stems, differing in thickness. Even if there is not enough moisture, the elasticity of the stems is maintained, they will not break.

The tops are light green, the leaves are medium, round, pubescent, with veins and wavy edges, opposite, the petioles are long. Flowers of a simple type, with a red-violet color and a bright yellow core, are collected in panicle inflorescences. The roots do not grow in different directions, they are located in the space of the hole, from 10 to 12 tubers are formed on them. Root crops have a mass of 90 to 120 grams, approximately the same size, rounded-oval. Unmarketable potatoes are rare.

The peel of the root vegetable is light beige, thin. Small eyes are present in small quantities.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Due to the high starch content (20%), Lorkh potatoes are used in the production of this substance.

Before entering the register, a tasting of potatoes took place.The culture received a fairly high score - 4.8 on a five-point scale. In cooking, the potato variety is actively used in the preparation of side dishes and first courses. It has proven itself perfectly in the process of stewing and frying. The product retains its shape after hot processing. The potato is moderately crumbly, has a characteristic taste.

Maturation

The culture can be classified as mid-late. Seedlings appear 2 weeks after planting, and after 120 days biological maturity is achieved by root crops, you can harvest.

Yield

Average yield indicators - 250 c / ha, maximum - 350 c / ha. The marketability of fruits is high.

Growing and care

The culture is quite unpretentious, but the variety is sensitive to lack of light. With its lack, the plant directs all its forces to the tops. In addition to good lighting, the area must be flat. The culture is unpretentious to the composition of the soil, but it is better to choose a light type of soil, for example, sandy loam, loam. On heavy soil types, the tubers will be small, even deformed.

When planting, it is important to take into account the peculiarities of the culture:

  • whole tubers should be planted without cutting, and the eyes should be directed downward;
  • potatoes of this variety can be planted without germination, then it is dug up 2 weeks later;
  • if groundwater passes close, you can raise the beds to a height of 15-20 centimeters;
  • between the holes during planting, it is necessary to maintain at least 35-40 centimeters, and in the aisles - 70-80 centimeters.

Lorch potatoes must be buried:

  • large tubers - 8-10 cm;
  • small - 6-8 cm.

Caring for the culture in question is not complicated, they are traditional. If everything is done correctly, after 3 months it will be possible to harvest.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
