Queen Anne is a rising star among early maturing potatoes. High yield, unpretentiousness and excellent taste are the main advantages of this variety, which have already been noted by many professional gardeners and amateurs. The article provides information on what Queen Anne is, how these potatoes should be grown, and how to find them in cooking.
Breeding history
Queen Anne was bred by German scientists with the joint cooperation of Solana GmbH & CO KG and Saka Pflanzenzucht GmbH & CO KG (Hamburg, Germany). In 2015, this variety was entered in the state register of the Russian Federation, as well as Belarus and Ukraine.
Description of the variety
Queen Anna belongs to the early and mid-early table varieties. This potato is distinguished by good taste, undemanding care, high immunity against various kinds of pests, as well as the possibility of long-term storage of ripe tubers (prerequisites are low temperature and humidity level of about 65%).
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
The bushes of this plant are spreading, have a height of about half a meter, are semi- or erect and belong to the stem type. A characteristic feature is rapid growth at the initial stage of formation.
The leaves of this potato are closed, rather large and green. On the leaf blade itself, there are short hairs and well-defined veins.
Inflorescences can be both medium and large in size, flower corollas are large and have a white color. On the inside of the corolla, the anthocyanin color is either weakly visible or absent altogether.
The surface of the tubers is even and smooth, the rind is strong and has a yellow color, like the flesh itself. There are almost no eyes. The very shape of the fruit is elongated-oval.
Purpose and taste of tubers
Koroleva Anna potatoes have a good taste - slightly sweet, rich, without bitterness. And also a plus is the preservation of external characteristics (elasticity and yellow color in the pulp) during heat treatment.
The use of fruits of this variety is universal - potatoes can be baked in the oven, deep-fried, mashed, and also added to salads and first courses.
Maturation
The time from the day of planting to the full maturation of the Queen Anne tubers is 90-100 days (from the date of germination - 75-90 days).
Yield
This potato variety is characterized by a high yield rate - on average from 113 to 304 c / ha (the highest values were recorded in Belarus - almost 495 c / ha). The mass of a ripe root crop is 84-137 g. In total, there can be from 6 to 16 tubers on a bush.
Growing regions
Queen Anna can be cultivated in the Middle Volga, Central, North-West, North-Caucasian, Volgo-Vyatka, East and West Siberian regions of the Russian Federation, as well as in the territories of Belarus and Ukraine.
Growing and care
A feature of this variety is the presence of a pronounced resting stage, and therefore it is recommended to germinate the tubers well in advance of planting. For this, small, even root crops are selected without any defects. They are warmed up (in a greenhouse or other warm room), and after germination they are greened, keeping in direct sunlight. These measures will improve the germination rate and shorten the growing season. And also do not forget that cutting tubers is unacceptable for this variety.
Planting material is carried out at a soil temperature of 10 to 12 degrees, when the likelihood of repeated frosts is excluded (April-May, depending on the region) according to an approximate scheme of 37 cm by 73 cm.It is recommended to arrange potato beds along a line from north to south - thus sunny light and warmth will be evenly distributed throughout the planting.
The periods of active flowering of bushes and the formation of fruits coincide, so at this stage the plants need to be watered at least once a week.
The roots of the Queen Anna potatoes are located close to the ground, so the bushes of this variety need hilling. This procedure will protect the roots from dehydration and the negative effects of sunlight.
It is recommended to fertilize the bushes 3 times in one season:
at the stage of active growth of green mass;
during the formation of flower buds;
during exuberant flowering.
For feeding, it is better to use mineral fertilizers, as well as organic substances - peat, river sand "coarsely ground", lime or wood ash.
In addition, one should not forget about such simple rules of agricultural technology as weeding the beds, loosening the soil and removing weeds. And also you should regularly carry out preventive measures to prevent various diseases, the appearance of harmful insects and other parasites.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Soil requirements
Queen Anne potatoes can be grown in any soil. However, the better the soil, the larger and better the final harvest will be. Therefore, it is preferable that the soil is loose, contains various nutrients and has good air permeability. And also the ground should not be too wet and cold - otherwise the bush will not germinate.
Required climatic conditions
Thanks to agricultural technology and an abundance of various types of fertilizers, potatoes of this variety can be grown in regions with almost any climate. But still, the main requirements of Queen Anne are:
the presence of abundant sunlight;
warmed up soil;
lack of strong gusts of wind;
lack of stagnant water in the beds.
According to a number of sources, this potato variety can withstand short-term drought.
Disease and pest resistance
Queen Anne's bushes and fruits are resistant to diseases and parasites such as:
scab;
cancer;
golden cyst nematode;
rhizoctonia;
striped mosaic;
wrinkled mosaic;
black spot;
glandular spot;
leaf roll virus;
blackleg;
late blight of tubers, stems and leaves (requires additional preventive treatment).
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
