Among the many potato varieties, early varieties of domestic breeding are in special demand, which are unpretentious in care, resistant to fungi and quickly adapt to the climatic conditions of the growing zone. These include the Gulliver variety, which is characterized by an excellent presentation.

Breeding history

Gulliver is the brainchild of domestic scientists-breeders, which appeared in 2015 on the basis of the All-Russian Research Institute of Potato Farming named after V.I. A.G. Lorkha. The parental forms of the new variety are Adora and Concorde potatoes. Gulliver was added to the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 2018. The nightshade culture is zoned in two regions of Russia - Central and Central Black Earth.

Description of the variety

The early potato is a tall, intermediate type, growing up to 80-85 cm in height. The plant is characterized by semi-erect strong stems, medium leafiness, dark green foliage of large size and a developed rhizome. Mature bushes are slightly lodging. A feature of the plant is the intricate structure of the rhizomes, which are able to develop rapidly. During the flowering period, medium red-violet flowers form on the bushes.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

Up to 11 tubers ripen on one bush. The mass of a vegetable can reach 140 grams (on average, it is 106-139 g). The shape of the tubers is correct - elongated-oval with a smooth surface, on which small eyes with a shallow bedding. The peel of the potato is thin, almost transparent, light beige in color.

The dug potatoes are excellently transported over long distances and can also be stored at the correct temperature and humidity level. According to gardeners and farmers, potatoes have a tendency to germinate quickly, so it may not last until April.

Purpose and taste of tubers

The variety tastes great. The creamy pulp is characterized by medium density, light powdery and pleasant oiliness. During peeling and heat treatment, the potatoes do not darken. The boiled vegetable is weakly boiled and cracks a little, but does not crumble, losing its shape. Potato pulp contains up to 15.5% starch, as well as a number of trace elements and vitamins.

Gulliver potatoes are best suited for boiling peeled and peeled. In addition, it is added to soups, borscht, fried and boiled when young.

Maturation

Early potato variety. From the moment of emergence to harvest, only 60-70 days pass, and the first digging can be carried out after 45 days. The germination of sprouts is friendly - it comes after 2-3 weeks. Mass digging of potatoes takes place in July, but the harvest time may shift slightly due to climatic features.

Yield

The variety is quite fruitful.Under favorable conditions and correct agricultural technology, an average of 163 to 283 centners of root crops can be dug out per hectare of plantations. And from one bush you can collect about 2 kg of potatoes. The maximum rate is 371 centners per hectare.

Growing and care

Potatoes are planted from mid-April to the first decade of May. It depends on the climatic characteristics of the region. The main thing is that the soil and ground warm up enough (10-12 degrees), and the threat of return spring frosts has passed, since the plant does not tolerate temperature drops well. The planting tubers must be germinated, healthy, free from damage and of medium size. Landing is carried out according to the scheme 40x70 cm.

To obtain a good harvest, the culture should be provided with proper care, consisting of: loosening row spacings, removing weeds, hilling (2 times per season), watering, feeding, preventing viruses and insect infestations.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.

Soil requirements

Potatoes grow well in nutritious and light soil, such as black soil or sandstones. The soil must be breathable, moisture permeable and acid-neutral. If the groundwater flow is shallow, then planting potatoes in high ridges is recommended.

It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Required climatic conditions

Gulliver potatoes are thermophilic, easily tolerate drought. The area for growing potatoes is selected flat, free of weeds. He should be abundantly illuminated by the sun, light. The nightshade culture is susceptible to prolonged shade and moisture stagnation, to drafts.

Disease and pest resistance

Early potatoes have strong immunity, therefore they are able to resist cancer, nematodes, common and black scab, as well as late blight of leaves, wrinkled and banded mosaics. Most often, the variety is exposed to late blight of tubers and Alternaria. The main pests that attack the early cultivar are wireworms and the Colorado potato beetle. Spraying with insecticidal preparations is carried out at least 3 weeks before harvesting.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
