Evolution is a relatively young potato variety native to the Netherlands. However, in a very short time, this culture managed to fall in love with many farmers. After all, the variety is able to grow successfully and ripen quickly, while giving good yields in almost any region, regardless of climate conditions and agricultural technology. Simple standard care is enough. Therefore, it is often used in commercial cultivation and not only.

Breeding history

Work on the breeding of a potato crop, which took place in the famous Dutch company Agrico U. A., located near the town of Emmeloord, was completed in 2011. Dutch specialists have obtained a new potato variety Evolution, capable of adapting to any climatic conditions and at the same time giving high yields even with minimal maintenance. Unsurprisingly, the culture appealed to farmers and quickly spread throughout the world.

Synonyms: Evolution, Evolution. By the way, it was under these names that in 2015 the Dutch potato variety was included in the State Register, thus hitting the Russian market.

Description of the variety

Thanks to the use of many years of experience, Dutch breeders have created a truly high-quality variety that has almost no drawbacks. But the main advantages should be noted:

  • excellent keeping quality - up to 95%;
  • fairly high yield rates, close to 548 c / ha;
  • pleasant taste;
  • versatility of tubers;
  • superficial arrangement of the eyes;
  • immunity to mosaic, potato crayfish and hookworm.

But there are also a couple of downsides.

  • Evolution does not tolerate drought, does not feel well in the absence of watering. It is difficult to get a good harvest of potatoes in especially unfavorable growing conditions.
  • The culture is exposed to phytophthora.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The above-ground part of the Dutch variety bushes are medium to tall erect spreading plants that can grow up to 70 centimeters. The stems have a large number of large green leaves.

Abundant flowering, large inflorescences of beautiful purple or red-purple tones. Each plant forms large roots, from 9 to 15 pieces.

The tubers have an oval oblong shape. The rind of the potato is a bright brown-red color, with many small and superficially located eyes, so cleaning the tuber is simple. The color of the pulp is yellowish. The mass of potatoes varies from 83 to 144 grams.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Evolution potatoes boast of excellent taste. Belongs to culinary type B, it showed itself well in fried side dishes, since this variety is ideal for frying. And also it is often baked, the product is also used in soups and salads. Less commonly, mashed potatoes are made from this variety. The starch content is in the range of 11-15%.

Maturation

Medium early potato variety. Evolution ripens 90-100 days after planting.

Yield

The average yield is quite high - 241-421 c / ha. The maximum indicator was recorded in the Vologda region - 548 c / ha.

Growing regions

According to the State Register of the Russian Federation, the regions of cultural zoning are as follows:

  • Northwestern;
  • Central;
  • Volgo-Vyatsky;
  • North Caucasian;
  • Ural;
  • Western Siberia.

Growing and care

For the successful cultivation of the Evolution variety, it is important to prepare high-quality planting material. For these purposes, the roots must be small, without flaws, any visible defects. For this Dutch variety, preliminary germination is not necessary, however, the originators recommend subjecting the prepared tubers to a temperature shock before planting: this will wake them up and start the growth process.

You can start the procedure for planting tubers if the soil has already warmed up to +8 degrees. The approximate landing dates that correspond to the event are from May 1 to May 15.

The territory of the plantation is arranged in an open, sunny place where there is no strong wind. Shady conditions are not suitable for this variety as it will then have low productivity. It is better to plant varietal potatoes in a loose and nutritious sandy soil mixture, it can also be loam, sandy loam or sod soil.

You cannot plant these potatoes for more than 2 seasons in a row in one place. The best predecessors will be cruciferous, as well as legumes, pumpkin, melons. You can plant dill, parsley, calendula nearby so that they scare off pests.

As for the Evolution potato planting scheme, it is standard. Row spacing - from 60-70 centimeters. From bush to bush - not less than 30 centimeters. The care is also classic. Irrigation according to the regime, but in drought they irrigate quite often. Top dressing is applied according to the scheme, but nitrogen is limited. You also need to hilling.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

Dutch experts endowed the Evolution potato with resistance to such ailments as the causative agent of potato cancer, golden potato cyst nematode, and wrinkled mosaic. However, the culture is moderately susceptible to the causative agent of late blight of tops and root crops.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them.If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
