European potato crops are frequent guests in domestic gardens. One of these, already tested and popular, is the Elmundo variety, which is a Dutch selection.

Breeding history

In 2013, another Dutch potato variety was added to the lists of the State Register and was approved for cultivation in farmsteads and private farms in Russia. A culture has been introduced under the name El Mundo. The company that submitted the application is the well-known Dutch trading house Stet Holland B. V., since 1973, specializing in the development, cultivation and export of seed potatoes to most countries in Europe, Asia and the USA. Breeder Peter Oldenkamp became the author of the Elmundo variety.

Description of the variety

Elmundo potatoes have become so popular among farmers of all levels due to their simplicity in care and cultivation. The culture in question is not very demanding on the soil, it is drought-resistant, plus the variety is excellently stored for a long time without losing its qualities. Let's list the main advantageous characteristics of the Dutch culture:

  • bears fruit on almost any soil;
  • at the same time it has a decent yield;
  • excellent marketability of tubers;
  • strong immunity against many diseases;
  • excellent taste characteristics;
  • early ripening.

Some consumers consider the poor digestibility of potatoes to be a relative disadvantage, which makes mashed potatoes difficult.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The Elmundo potato bush forms a straight, tall stem of about 70 cm.On the tops, emerald-colored leaves with jagged edges. It blooms with small flowers, painted in white and purple tones. The branched root system allows the plant to form a large number of tubers: from 20 to 30 pieces.

The shape of the root crops is rounded-oval, there are many small eyes on the smooth surface. The thin rind is quite dense. The skin and flesh are the same color: yellow and light yellow, respectively. The mass of tubers varies within 106-135 g. Vegetables are distinguished by an attractive presentation.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Elmundo potatoes have a rich taste, the flesh is slightly watery, but does not darken on the cut. The product contains up to 13.6% starch. When cooked, the vegetable retains its shape, it is great for frying, you can cook deep-fried potatoes.

Maturation

Early maturing potatoes of Dutch selection are characterized by rapid growth and maturation, which occurs 70–80 days after planting. Young potatoes are eaten on the 45th day.

Yield

Crop culture. Depending on the fertility of the soil, on average, you can get from 248 to 345 c / ha.

Growing regions

The Elmundo variety is zoned for several Russian regions: for the Central, TsChO, North Caucasian, Middle Volga and Northwest regions.

Growing and care

For this European variety, any soil options can be suitable, the main requirements are a loose structure and low acidity. If the soil is heavy, it will be difficult for the culture to form stolons and develop a root system. The place on the site should be illuminated for the maximum amount of daytime so that the tops do not reach for the light, and this, in turn, can lead to shredding of the tubers.

It is desirable that the site be protected from northern and north-western gusts of wind, from drafts. The territory itself should be flat, at most it can be a small slope.Moisture should not accumulate, and the distance to groundwater should be within 1.5 m from the surface of the earth.

The planting pattern for Elmundo potatoes looks like rows located at a distance of 70–80 cm. Between the planting holes - 35 cm, the tubers are placed at a depth of 10 cm. In this case, the eyes of the root crop should look up. Potato crop care consists of watering, fertilizing, hilling and other traditional activities.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

Elmundo has a high resistance to potato diseases. The culture resists such ailments as potato cancer, golden cyst nematode. The variety has an average resistance to late blight, as well as leaf twisting, some types of mosaics.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
