One of the most sought-after vegetable crops from the nightshade family has been expanded with a new variety that has shown excellent results during field trials. Belmond's potatoes are distinguished by a complex of the best qualities that characterize this type of fruit and vegetable products - they are fast ripening, high productivity and resistance to diseases.
Breeding history
On the basis of the German Seed Alliance Solana, European breeders have created a new potato variety called Belmonda. The specialists managed to obtain a new generation type of vegetable crop. Varietal features are characterized by a high degree of productivity, excellent taste and many other advantages that are useful during transportation and storage of crops.
Description of the variety
To get the most useful result from planting and growing Belmond potatoes in farms, as well as private household farms, it is useful to familiarize yourself with the features of this variety.
In many European countries, a new mid-season potato variety matures on average for about 80 days. Belmonda easily adapts to different climatic conditions without a noticeable decrease in yield. And also successfully passed field trials of the new variety in various regions of the Russian Federation.
On the grown bushes, potato tubers grow rather quickly and differ in a uniform formation period, therefore, by the time of harvest, almost all of them become of a standard size. At the same time, the vegetable variety is undemanding to care and differs from many other varieties by its excellent endurance.
The fruits of Belmond potatoes have an oval shape, weighing 98-143 grams and a high starch content of 14-16%. The high keeping rate of 97% allows the crop to be transported over long distances without any significant losses, and also contributes to the good preservation of products for winter consumption.
Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops
Belmond's potatoes differ little from their counterparts in the appearance of the bushes, which grow tall and covered with typical slightly wrinkled dark green leaves. During flowering, the nightshade crop is covered with white inflorescences, and the edges of the petals are reddish or purple.
Potato oval tubers reach 8-9 cm in length, the width of which is slightly less. Root crops have the correct shape and presentation, their average weight is 120 grams. The fruits of the Belmond variety are covered with a yellow skin, the texture is smooth and clean, without spots, over which a few small eyes are distributed. The juice content of potatoes differs slightly depending on the moisture content in the growing area.
Purpose and taste of tubers
Belmond potato tubers contain a significant amount of B vitamins, ascorbic acid, Omega-3 acids, carotene, lycopene, as well as many minerals, including:
phosphorus;
potassium;
iodine;
molybdenum;
iron.
The universal use of the new potato variety is due to its ability not to change color under the influence of air when cut into small pieces. When boiling, potatoes preserve the integrity of the tubers, do not crack and do not boil. They can be used for mashed potatoes or for cooking uncoated whole root vegetables, baking, frying, stewing, and salads.
Maturation
High-yielding potatoes are medium early varieties. Fully formed tubers are harvested on the 70-80th day after planting the seedlings.
Yield
The experience of growing potatoes of the Belmond variety in different regions, subject to the usual regime of watering, feeding, weeding and hilling plants, shows a high yield of the new selection product. Root crops are responsive to compliance with agrotechnical rules for caring for this crop. The maximum harvests in the most suitable climatic zones reached up to 20.6 tons per hectare. In the conditions of a garden plot, 12-16 large potatoes collected from one bush correspond to such fertility.
Growing and care
To quickly obtain a large harvest of Belmond potatoes, it is important to ensure their timely and correct planting. In different climatic zones, the time of planting seed material may differ in terms of up to 1 month, since somewhere it may be mid-April, and in other regions - mid-May. You should focus on the soil stably warmed up to +12 degrees to a depth of 20 cm.On average, this indicator can be formed by the beginning of May.
If seed tubers with sprouts are planted in too cold soil, diseases such as fungal infections of the fruit can develop on them. In addition, low temperatures retard the normal development of the potato crop, and one can only lose in terms of the quality of the crop. Planted in a sufficiently warm, spring soil, before the onset of hot days, the root crop will have time to use the natural moisture, and will get a good start for growth.
Before planting, the tubers are laid out in one layer, removing the damaged ones, and sprayed with preparations to protect against pests and fungal infections. Then the tubers are germinated at a temperature of about +20 degrees. On the prepared site, organic fertilizers are introduced in the form of rotted manure in advance.
During the dry season, potatoes must be watered abundantly once a week, preferably in the evening.
Top dressing of potatoes is carried out during the growth of bushes and the formation of fruits. For the first time after the emergence of shoots up to 15 cm high, nitrogen fertilizers are applied for the growth of green mass. Before flowering, it is useful to spray the aerial part of the plant with liquid humic fertilizers that can be found on the market. After the end of the flowering period, a solution of bird droppings with water is introduced, repeating this procedure again, but with a lower concentration - for this, 1 can of ready-made manure is added to 24 liters of water.
Hilling potato bushes contributes to moisture retention and rapid formation of the root system of plants. The consequence of this feature of care is the formation of a large number of large tubers.
Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.
Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.
